Dozy Trainspotter Video | Steam Train Enthusiast Almost Wiped Out By Modern Loco

Posted: 31 Oct 2010 09:57 AM PDT

What a lucky, lucky guy. Or should I say idiot? Whatever he is, he’s fortunate to be alive after this close encounter with a speeding train.

I love steam trains, regularly visiting old railway lines where they still operate. But I’m no trainspotter. Which means I’d always think about my personal safety before the opportunity to get a good shot of a train.

This guy hasn’t read the same manual as me, and instead wanders onto the line in order to get a good view as the steam train trundles by. The only problem is the modern equivalent that is coming the other way.

This could have been really messy, but the guy doesn’t seem that bothered by his brush with death.

Maybe he’s used to them. Maybe he’s had similar experiences before. In which case, Death must be chasing him, Final Destination style. Just like the guy yesterday who narrowly avoided being crushed in bed. Strange times!

History Of Halloween Video | National Geographic Explains Meaning Of Halloween

Posted: 31 Oct 2010 04:54 AM PDT

It’s October 31, which means just one thing: Halloween. But when and how did Halloween begin? And why do millions of children dress up and go out Trick or Treating? National Geographic has the answers.

This relatively short video spells out the history of Halloween and some of the traditions associated with it.

The celebration which became Halloween has been around for 2,000 years, with the Celts of Europe believing that Oct. 31 was the day when the worlds of the living and the dead came together. They lit bonfires to keep spirits away.

Religion then got involved, as it so often does, and Nov. 1 was labeled ‘Hallowmas’, or ‘All Saints Day’. Oct. 31 was therefore All Hallows Eve, which gradually morphed into Halloween.

Trick or Treat began as a form of extortion by poor Irish immigrants in the U.S. Giving treats to the youngsters became a way or avoiding vandalism, and so grew what has now become the main Halloween tradition.

Freaky Tattooed Man Injects Ink Into Eyes News Video | Expressing Individuality, or Just Plain Creepy?

Posted: 30 Oct 2010 07:45 PM PDT

I don’t go for tattoos. While most of my friends proudly show off a few inked designs, I’m happy to have my skin blissfully bare. But I must admit to a kind of curiosity about folks who take it to the extreme like Matt Gone.

Gone has more tattoos than anyone else in Portland, Oregon, or perhaps much of America. He’s covered 98% of his body with ink, so he was starting to run out of places to put designs.

Clearly the next logical step was to inject his eyeballs. Thankfully this video doesn’t show us that kind of goriness, but this is still pretty confronting stuff.

Gone seems happy with his wild appearance, but I don’t think I’ll be joining him with my own ink any time soon.

Awesome Car Crash Video | Australian Has Lucky Escape As Car Smashes Into Bedroom

Posted: 30 Oct 2010 09:04 AM PDT

A man in Melbourne, Australia had a lucky escape when a car smashed into his house and on to the bed he was lying in just minutes before. And there was thinking Final Destination was just a movie.

I guess there are two ways of dealing with an event such as this one:

1. Consider yourself lucky to be alive and come to realize how precious and finite life is. Then spend the rest of your days being happy, doing nice things, and generally being a good person.

2. Assume that Death is out to get you and spend every waking moment of the rest of your life looking for danger signs that he is lurking round the next corner. Before dying of natural causes at a ripe old age.

Or secret option number 3: forget it ever happened and carry on as before. That sounds like a plan.

GoldenEye 007 Wii Trailer Video | Daniel Craig Replaces Pierce Brosnan In N64 Remake

Posted: 30 Oct 2010 03:04 AM PDT

This video is the new trailer for GoldenEye 007, a Wii remake/homage to the Nintendo 64 classic which remains one of the best first-person shooters around.

GoldenEye 007 on the N64 was absolutely awesome. It was the first FPS to really show the genre at its best, and that game began the trend for first-person shooters being the biggest-selling titles around.

However, can the remake – which admittedly is very different than the original, especially with Daniel Craig taking over as Bond – really succeed when facing Call of Duty: Black Ops and the new Medal Of Honor?

In terms of nostalgia, yes, but otherwise probably not. If you’re a graphics whore then don’t even bother as these are just about tolerable. Still, part of me wants to relive past glories on the N64, so I may have to at least rent GoldenEye 007 on the Wii.

Hilarious Farting Iguana Video | Bathing Lizard Lets One Rip

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 07:35 PM PDT

I like to consider myself a fairly mature person. I don’t go for those gross out teen comedies, or listen to Howard Stern’s radio show. But even I’m not immune to the humor of this farting iguana.

This is one of the shortest videos I’ve posted, but in under 10 seconds I guarantee you’ll get a giggle. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll play it a couple more times to have a laugh all over again. And then you’ll probably share it with your friends.

Because let’s face it; where else can you see a farting iguana? This bathing lizard just made my day!

Anti-Abortion ‘Wanted’ Posters (Video) | Religion & Violence Meet Again

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 05:20 PM PDT

Earlier this week there were anti-abortion protesters at my university with graphic posters of chopped up fetuses and handouts. For a second I had to stop and asked myself, “Is it legal to show that in public?”

Even though the anti-abortion ‘Wanted’ posters in this video contain no blood, they are still shocking to say the least. Many doctors have been murdered in the past over them.

While the posters depicted in this video were ruled to be illegal in certain states in 2002, they still are around for those that haven’t passed legislation. It saddens me that religious groups would turn to dirty tricks like this to prove their point- they might as well read, “Wanted Dead or Alive!”

The doctor in this video is in a tough dilemma, should he leave is profession in safety or continue helping women that would otherwise have to turn to blackmarket procedures? Either way his reputation is tarnished in his hometown.

Fainting Goat Kittens Video | Two Young Cats With Myotonia Congenita – Rare Phenomenon

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 09:30 AM PDT

You won’t know whether to laugh, cry, feel a little freaked out, or feel pity while watching this video. If I’m honest I experienced a little of everything.

This video shows two kittens (Charlie and Spike) suffering from Myotonia Congenita, otherwise known as ‘fainting goat syndrome’. It’s a condition that is usually found in goats and rarely in cats, hence the name.

It’s a strange and rare condition which means the animals collapse upon hearing the slightest noise. Once down they enter a rigid paralysis that lasts for around a minute before getting up and carrying on as if nothing had happened.

It’s a very bizarre sight which is, let’s face it, mildly amusing. But it’s also very sad that any creature has to suffer like this, especially cute kittens who are the epitome of innocence.

Hawaii Five-O Opening Credits Video | In Honor Of James MacArthur, AKA Danno

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 02:30 AM PDT

This video shows the opening credits to the original Hawaii Five-O, complete with legendary theme song and iconic breaking wave. And it’s in honor of James MacArthur who has sadly died at the age of 72.

Hawaii Five-O originally ran from 1968 to 1980, and MacArthur appeared throughout the run except for the pilot episode and the final season, quitting because he’d become bored with the show.

MacArthur played Detective Dan Williams, also known as Danny and Danno. The latter name was used in the best-known catchphrase of the series, “Book ‘em, Danno!”

MacArthur will be most-remembered for Hawaii Five-O but also appeared in several movies including The Swiss Family Robinson and Hang ‘Em High. He died of natural causes surrounded by his family at his home in Florida.

Adorable Rescued Baby Hummingbird Video | So Tiny, So Cute

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 07:32 PM PDT

Hummingbirds are pretty darned cute. But you take a bay hummingbird, and his adorability measures off the charts.

This lucky lad came across an orphaned baby hummingbird and nursed him back to health. Clearly they formed a deep bond as the birdy drank from an eyedropper and settled on his hand.

The boy doesn’t have the skills of the baby bird's mama, but his gentle encouragement sees this pint-sized hummer flying like a pro in no time.

This video beautifully captures the relationship between the boy and bird and sets it to an easy Jack Johnson soundtrack. Does it get any better than this?

Watch Jon Stewart Interview President Obama on The Daily Show Video

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart Mon – Thurs 11p / 10c
Barack Obama Pt. 1

Jon Stewart on The Daily Show proves he is moving up in the world by holding a special one on one interview with United States President Barack Obama.

As much as I wonder if this is like Stewart meeting his hero, I have to admire the way he takes the interview questions.

He is not nearly as hard hitting as he could be, certainly, but questions have to be approved and all that. Even so, he handles himself well – as does Obama.

Watch Easy Halloween Costume Ideas: Dos and Don’ts Video | Celebrity Stylist Tips

Celebrity stylists Phillip Bloch, Jessica Paster, and George Kotsiopoulos give you a few tips for your easy, at home DIY Halloween costumes.

While you may not care to go to your Halloween party as one of Katy Perry’s California Girls or as one of the Kardashian sisters, these stylists will make you feel a lot less stressed about making your own costume.

Ah, Halloween. It isn’t my favorite holiday, but that’s probably because I left the US before I got to be old enough for the really fun, adult parties and costumes.

Shops here are trying to get Halloween to catch on because it’s such an absolute cash cow, but it’s still not very popular…

Maybe next year.
