Black Panther's David Liss Unleashes the 'American Panther'

dailypop | July 13, 2011 at 4:09 pm | Tags: black panther marvel comics liss | Categories: Marvel | URL: http://wp.me/p4kUt-2Q2

David Liss is quickly becoming a hot writer in the comic book world thanks to his highly acclaimed run on Black Panther  and the runaway hit Mystery Men.

Recently interviewed by his hometown paper the San Antonio Express-News, Liss revealed his Avengers dream team... I have to admit that it's a fine line-up.

Like any merry Marvel comic book writer, San Antonio novelist David Liss has his own list of favorites for the Avengers, Marvel's flagship super-team that hits the big screen next year. So who comprises Liss' dream team for Earth's Mightiest Heroes? Let's just say one of them should come as no surprise whatsoever.

Liss tells Marvel he likes Captain America (the original Steve Rogers), Luke Cage, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel and Black Panther for his Avengers assembly — quite the modern spin with two classic members, albeit no founding ones. And yes, Liss himself says he's probably bias to T'Challa (Liss is writing his adventures in Black Panther: The Man Without Fear after all) but that Black Panther "makes things much more interesting."

Not sure when or if Liss' Avengers will ever see the light of print, but you can still get two times the Liss this week with Black Panther: The Man Without Fear No. 521 and Mystery Men No. 3. Both books drop Wednesday, July 13.

Here's a preview of the latest issue of Black Panther, on the stands today.

[New post] The Dazzler movie that never was (or will be)

The Dazzler movie that never was (or will be)

dailypop | July 13, 2011 at 1:31 pm | Tags: dazzler shooter marvel comics disco | Categories: Marvel | URL: http://wp.me/p4kUt-2PT

It's difficult to understand the character of Dazzler today. One can attempt to connect her to the modern day 'divas' such as Lady Gaga, but that's ignoring the elephantine disco ball in the diddle of the room. Dazzler was an attempt to capitalize on the disco fad and cement a relationship with Casablanca Records (home of the then-popular KISS). Even after an introduction in a Claremont/Byrne issue of the X-Men, not much came of it. Her monthly book was a cult hit and attracted an unusually high standard of creative talent... but it was still built on the backbone of disco.

Recently a spotlight dance has been centered on the Dazzler feature film and the debacle that was almost unleashed on the viewing public. It's so absurd that I want to see it, even in Playmobil format. Evil musicians ruling a post-apocalyptic future where dinosaurs roam is just too amazing tpo not realize. Maybe the attention will prompt a revisit to the project and I'll get my evil wish.

IO9 has posted an amazing article about the astound Dazzler film that never was, linking to the script excerpts over at Jim Shooter's astounding blog (that's two sites for you to bookmark).

Note: Regular poster and contributor Zeno brought Shooter's blog to my attention a couple of month's back. it's essential reading.

Dazzler, the Marvel superhero pop star — who has the power to transform sound into light — completely and totally deserves her own movie. She's a disco diva with a lot of sass, and some incredibly bad decision-making skills (she once fought Galactus). Plus with music starlets like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga ruling pop culture, surely there's some demand today for a pop star superhero flick. This was not the movie that ex-Marvel EIC Jim Shooter wrote. Instead of a fabulous story about a pop star kicking ass, Shooter went full-nuts and wrote this amazingly demented script about Dazzler, The Avengers and Spider-Man getting transported into the future to fight off famous musicians.

The whole story of how this screenplay came to be is hilarious, and you should read the full tale at Shooter's site, but basically sometime in 1979 Hollywood asked Shooter to piece together a Dazzler script, in four days. They suggested he team up with Harlan Ellison (ha!). Shooter sat down and poured out what is surely the most demented tale we've ever laid eyes on. And at one point Bo Derek was actually attached to star in this film. But alas, it fell into some script purgatory hell, never to be heard of again. Until Shooter posted the 12-page pitch on his site. Here's the run-down.

As for casting, the studio had high hopes — including Cher as the Witch Queen, Donna Summer as the Queen of Fire, KISS as the Deadknights, Robin Williams as Tristan, Rodney Dangerfield as Dewey Cheetham and Howe (and Lord Chaos), The Village People as The Stompers, and Lenny and Squiggy as the Jesters. (And for now, let's just say Bo Derek as Dazzler).

Dazzler by Kalman Andrasofszky

________________________

Rodney Dangerfield (Cheetham) and Robin Williams (the sexy love interest Tristan) are caught in the middle of a battle and give the heroes shelter. What they see around them is a full on Helm's Deep battle. The troops from the North ride unicorns and hollowed-out VWs that have been turned into chariots. Meanwhile the Southern warriors ride dark lizards some who pull old Datsun pick-ups that have been turned into "battle-wagons" (I think we all know what side I'm on).

New trailer: The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 12:52 PM PDT

We have covered Tintin on here in the past, not least because we're big Tintin fans. We've also reviewed the old Tintin live action movies of the 1960s - Tintin and the Blue Oranges and Tintin and the Mystery of the Golden Fleece. So we're more then keen to see what The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn turns out like.

The movie is a big Hollywood affair, directed by Steven Spielberg no less, although we're more appreciative of the fact that Joe Cornish (of Adam and Joe) has a writing credit, so despite the big budget, we're hopeful it might well be a fitting tribute to the original comic strip.

Saying that, the real life-like animation might take some getting used to. Check out the trailer now below, with the big screen date set at October 26th 2011.

Dvfnewsy

Workwear rails in most high street shops would have us all consigned to a life of ill-fitting blazers and suit pieces in a variety of drab colours. However, turning to retro designs can be just the antidote, achieving that balance between conservatism and style in your day wardrobe.

This Newsy Dress by Diane von Furstenberg is a perfect piece of stylish daywear, using a shirt dress shape to create a suitably formal silhouette, the graphic seventies-inspired print ensures there's nothing dull about it. Made from a 100% silk fabric, the colours are vibrant and head-turning, while the luxurious material allows for the shape to skim the figure in the most flattering fashion.

Diamond

If you want a new one, you'll be looking at paying out £841 at a reputable UK retailer. This Knoll Harry Bertoia Diamond Chair is currently much, much cheaper.

Obviously, this is a secondhand midcentury design, the original dating back no 1950. But according to the seller, this is an official Knoll Diamond Chair, which is the important bit.

Condition is described as 'good but not perfect' condition. with some wires at the front looking repaired and touched up (pictures on the main listing). There are also some age scratches and scruffs. So not as good as getting a new one, but at the present price of £6.29, an absolute bargain.

Desk One from Another Country

Another country desk

Another Country's Desk One gives a contemporary design update to an old-fashioned style school desk.

While the essential components of a desk are there - a drawer, and an indentation in its top to hold your pens and pencils - this is probably far higher quality of anything you ever sat at while in school. It's made in the UK, produced in Dorset to be specific, from solid oak/ash. It's been adapted for twenty-first century demands too, with an option of a cable tidy to accommodate computers and the like. Pick from the natural version pictured, or a black finish.

The desk costs £895.
