Killer Whales Hunting Video | Shamu Trying To Catch Seals In Shallow Water – & Failing

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 09:52 AM PST

Killer whales, or orcas, are back in the news again after one of the Shamu at SeaWorld dragged its trainer Dawn Brancheau under the water to an early death.

This video shows two killer whales hunting seals right on the coast. They’ll even venture into very shallow water if there’s a chance of catching prey. And it shows just how huge and scary orcas are.

Is the orca blamed with Brancheau’s death, known as Tilikum, really to blame or is it just a natural urge? Surely this tragic incident should lead to SeaWorld closing down its Shamu shows, but no, they’re already back up and running just days later.

Why are killer whales turned into fun and frivolous creatures for human entertainment? What kind of people go and see the Shamu show? Is it really any more tolerable than watching dancing bears or circus animals?

Japan Tsunami Video | Magnitude 6.9 Earthquake Leads To Massive Tsunami Threat

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 04:49 AM PST

Another day, another earthquake. And another tsunami warning as fears build that offshore quakes will lead to huge waves crashing into the coastlines of Pacific nations.

Yesterday saw residents of coastal cities anxiously watching and waiting to see if a tsunami would hit the shore. Luckily, the threat now seems to have passed, with the U.S. and Japan both downgrading their tsunami warnings.

The Chilean earthquake wasn’t the only to have hit the planet in the last couple of days, with a quake measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale hitting off the coast of Japan as well.

As with Hawaii and the other countries fearful of a tsunami from the Chile earthquake, so Japan was worried about the effects of a tsunami hitting along its eastern seaboard.

The threat now seems to be over, or at least not as big as first thought. And thank God for that, as 200,000 people were killed by the tsunami in the Indian ocean in 2004.

World’s Oldest and Longest Running Mayor Video | Amazing 88-Year-Old Hazel McCallion of Canada

Posted: 27 Feb 2010 06:15 PM PST

Hazel McCallion is one amazing lady. When most 88-year-olds are quietly knitting or playing lawn bowls, she’s running Canada’s sixth largest city, Mississauga.

Hazel has been mayor of the Canadian city for the last 31 years. She’s won 11 elections, and outlasted eight Canadian presidents. But don’t even suggest that she’s over the hill.

Hazel’s track record speaks for itself. Her city is one of the few in the world to be debt free. In fact, it has a $700 million reserve. Her approval rating is a whopping 92%. But what’s not to love?

When she’s not looking after her people, Hazel loves to play ice hockey and ten-pin bowling.

What an inspirational lady!
