The Festival of Vintage event in York

Posted: 06 Feb 2011 09:33 AM PST

Festival

Not to be confused with the Wayne Hemingway event, The Festival of Vintage is a new event that promises to offer up more than a few retro and vintage bargains.

Taking place at York Racecourse on 30th April 2010, it's a mix of vintage entertainment and vintage market, focusing on the 1930s to the 1960s. Experience bygone music, styles and dancing from past decades, watch fashion displays, get make-up tips, check out classic cars and dress up in your favourite period gear.

All of that is perhaps a backdrop to the main event, with over 100 'specially selected' vintage dealers from across the UK selling everything from frocks to kitchenware and toys to radios. There will also be clubs, books and magazines plus various vintage experts on hand throughout the day. It runs from 10am- 5pm, entry is £4 for adults and under 16 are free.

Not just as retro design, according to John Lewis, its new Leon armchair was actually developed from an original 1960s vintage piece.

The end result is a mix between a classic win chair and a mid-century design, offering a curved button back, slightly flared arms and angled, walnut-stained legs. All of that upholstered in a high-end velvet fabric.

All of that for £850 online.

eBay watch: Large 1970s Italian wall shelving unit

Posted: 06 Feb 2011 02:41 AM PST

Italian

Absolutely love this design. Indeed, if I had a room big enough to take it, I would be all this large 1970s Italian wall shelving unit for it.

As I said above, it's an Italian design from the 1970s, reminding me of Biba if you like - 70s with an art nouveau twist. You can imagine it getting pride of place in a hip, extravagant home 'back in the day'. Indeed, the seller claims it was 'probably originally from Heals'.

In terms of the details, it's 172cm in height and 242cm in length, as well as being a mix of glass shelves, glass dividers and that metal frame and dark base. It does come apart from easy transporting, you'll be pleased to know. Condition seems to be good, see the small print for the detail and the price right now is a 'buy it now' or 'best offer' of £1,200.

I NEED YOU CHUCK JACKSON AND SCOTT MORGAN

Posted: 06 Feb 2011 09:44 AM PST

Very successful fabulous soul singer Chuck Jackson was the original singer for One of my favorite hits by Scott Morgan and The Ratio9nals. I like them both, but am partial to Scott and The Rationals harmonies vs Chuck with the girl backup singers. What do you think?

FREDDY SCOTT: HEY GIRL

Posted: 06 Feb 2011 09:26 AM PST

Freddy Scott

Freddie Scott, singer: born Providence, Rhode Island 24 April 1933; married; died 4 June 2007.

In 1963, Freddie Scott cut a demonstration record of "Hey Girl", a new song by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. The intended recipient was the hit-making Chuck Jackson, but he turned the song down.

Instead, Goffin and King liked Scott's voice so much that they recorded their own version with him. Phil Spector heard the results and said, "You've got to put that out. It's a smash." "Hey Girl" was a Top Ten US hit and became a club favorite in the UK, being covered by several beat groups of the time. Read full bio HERE

This song is anthemic of the 60's and one of my most favorite tunes and crooner songs of music history. Enjoy Freddie singing "Hey Girl"

NEW*** SUNDAY SOUL WITH SCOTT MORGAN!

Posted: 06 Feb 2011 05:18 AM PST

Scott Morgan

Good morning! You know? I am one lucky girl. I talked about soul music yesterday with Scott Morgan for a long time. Scott is the ultimate encyclopedic mind on this topic. He knows so many really fabulous classic rarely heard soul tunes.

From time to time I ask him to give me some tips for a story. Then yesterday it popped into my mind... Hey let's ask Scott if he'd do a regular gig disc jockeying you tube soul videos for RK? Scott loves soul music as do I and we trade off videos alot. Scott's are the very best... You will be surprised at his choices as am I.

Scott said sure Kim... so here is our first installment of Sunday Soul with Scott Morgan!

When the Rationals first went to Chicago our A & R guy had this song on the radio. He said it was a station that covered only a few blocks downtown. I asked him where we could get a copy and he went in his trunk and pulled one out.

It's Willy Dixon on bass and Buddy Guy on guitar. we finally got to 2120 South Michigan avenue (Chess Records) and parked in the alley. a girl sticks her head out the door and says you guys can park in my parking place. it was Willy's daughter Jackie. I think Chris Taylor (jukebox) got the key chain that says Im ready. Mine just says 2120.

This is supposed to be Etta's (Jamesetta Hawkins) favorite. I think it was recorded at Muscle Shoals (Alabama).

Evie Sands did a cover of this. We tried to record it with the Solution in Stockholm Sweden but I think the key was too high for me. When I sent them my demos the tape got held up in Germany. When I finally got to nick's house we put it on but there was nothing on it. The studio was the best in town and called Atlantis.

[New post] Captain America: The First Avenger (trailer)

Captain America: The First Avenger (trailer)

Captain America (Chris Evans) as seen in the forthcoming feature film

In case you missed it during the Super Bowl (like me), here's the trailer that many comic book fans have been waiting for...

(more about the upcoming Captain America film here)

Based on the 1941 comic book by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Captain America: The First Avenger is the latest step in Marvel Entertainment's inevitable march toward their Avengers film, a project that will unite their many projects from the Incredible Hulk to Iron Man and the upcoming Thor: The Mighty Avenger films. When a scrawny Steve Rogers volunteers to be the guinea pig in Operation: Rebirth, he becomes the first in what is intended to be an army of Super Soldiers against the Axis Powers in WWII. When the formula that granted him uncanny agility, endurance and strength is lost in a brutal assassination coup, Rogers realizes that he is the only one of his kind. A noble heroic soldier, he is clad in the colors of the American flag and takes to the battlefields of Europe armed with an unbreakable shield and steel nerves. A monument in bravery and fortitude, Rogers becomes Captain America and fights against the forces that would see an end to freedom.

As the popularity of adventure comics wanes and superheroes fell from grace so did Captain America who met his eventual cancellation in print format. Years later, Stan Lee had the wild idea to bring back Captain America and experimented with the concept by having a villain called the Acrobat pose as the star spangled hero in order to trick Johnny Storm (AKA the Human Torch of the Fantastic Four) into assisting him in committing a crime. The response was positive and in 1964 the Avengers discovered the frozen body of Steve Rogers while returning from a mission. Preserved in a cake of ice, Captain America was a man out of time in the swinging sixties and became an iconic figure of a bygone era. Since that time, Captain America has been a symbol of the superhero concept as it relates to patriotism and a sense of national identity. Rogers has had his disagreements not only with other heroes but with politicians as well, leading to more than his share of splits from authority.

In recent years, Captain America has become incredibly popular again thanks to the amazing monthly book by Ed Brubaker that utilized the spirit of the Simon/Kirby creation along with Lee's notion of a 'man out of time.' The monthly series has been a runaway hit since it relaunched and one flip through the pages rife with dynamic figures in action would win over the most reluctant reader.

The upcoming movie by director Joe Johnston (Rocketeer) stars Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, the Losers) and will be the first of what promises to be a long running line of films based on Captain America (Evans signed a multi-picture deal that includes three Cap pictures and three Avengers flicks). A period film set in WWII, the movie will be an origin tale showcasing Captain America's special mission against the forces of Hydra, an international organization led by the Red Skull (played by Hugo Weaving). With special black ops agent James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes (played by Sebastian Stan) at his side, Rogers must stop the Red Skull in his attempt to use a mythical Asgardian artifact called the 'cosmic cube,' a weapon so powerful that it threatens life on an unimaginable scale. The 2011 Captain America movie is said to incorp0rate several nods to the comic books dating back to the 40's including the Invaders, a kind of WWII version of the Avengers, consisting of heroes from various countries of the Allied Forces, and a lead-in to the Avengers film in 2012.

Captain America: The First Avenger hits the big screen Summer 2011.
