DJ STEVE KOSTAN STILL WORKING HIS "TEENAGE" JOB!

Posted: 14 Sep 2011 10:22 AM PDT

Detroit Disc Jockey Steve Kostan

Just got off the phone with Detroit Disc Jockey Steve Kostan ... We talked about his career in Detroit rock n roll, and a bit of bio on how Steve began his "teenage" job in broadcasting. Steve gave me that quote, as it refers to his great fortune to have a job for so many years that he truly loves. Steve is the first DJ I have written about. He is my favorite DJ in Detroit, maybe everywhere for that matter ...

Steve was a DJ for all the major stations in Detroit... WABX, W4 , WABX, WRIF, WCSX

Dave Edwards of The Look and Steve Kostan

Steve started in radio at Western Michigan University's radio station WIDR... Specs Howard Broadcasting School was just getting started so the best way to break into radio was by joining a college station.

Rick Vuk from the EDDIE LEIGHTON Project and Steve from 2010, Rockin on the Riverfront, opening for the ROMANTICS Steve with his Les Paul/Goldtop 1969

In 1977 DJ Ken Calvert hired Steve for just 1 weekend at WABX. After that weekend Ken called him back in and offered Steve an ongoing weekend job. Kostan has been working in Detroit Radio ever since.... Steve really does know everything and everybody in Detroit Rock... We could run on forever about our mutual friends and our favorite bands.

Steve with our pals Jim McCarty and Johnny Bee Badanjek

Here is an interesting bit of history Steve told me this morning: Steve, DJ John O'Leary, DJ Chuck Santoni and actor George C Scott all attended Redford High School in Detroit.

Adds Steve: TED NUGENT also went to Redford High in Detroit, Eddie Leighton went to Redford HS too. Didn't know him then.

Steve with Motorcity Rah Rahs Susie Forkin and Wendy Mastal

Steve has an incredible history, we share a lot of the same friends and a passion for Detroit Rock. One of the stories he did tell me today was about MC5 lead singer Rob Tyner. During the 20th anniversary of their song "Kick Out the Jams" Steve got to play guitar with Rob on vocals... How cool is that? Of course he has thousands of stories like that one. We hope Steve writes a book!

Arthur P, Steve Kostan, KarenSavelly and Ken Calvert on the end.

The first person that can write in today and tell me the names of all these Detroit DJ's is going to win a very cool Ruiners Tee Shirt!! retrokimmer@gmail.com I'll give you one hint ..."BABY!" WE have a winner! Larry I'll bring your t shirt with me to Detroit on the 21st...

Steve

Just recently Steve was made honored by the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland for his broadcasting work. How cool is that? Another of our mutual friends, Jack Ashton, called to tell me about that event which led to this me writing this story.

Steve and I are both Race Fans too.... check this video out:

Having been a huge fan of Steve's since he began in Detroit, it was so great to answer the phone today and hear that voice... Thanks so much Steve, for taking the time today and we are definitely going to catch one of your gigs in the D sometime soon... So cool! How lucky is Kimmer?

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 4 premieres with 'Water War'

dailypop | September 14, 2011 at 4:23 pm | Tags: jedi, star wars animated, star wars clone wars | Categories: cartoons, Star wars | URL: http://wp.me/p4kUt-34S

Official press release below:

Take the plunge with more action than ever, as the fourth season of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS launches with epic underwater battles unlike anything you've seen before!

The heroic Jedi Knights and the clone army continue the fight to preserve order, and defeat the Separatist forces. As the battle escalates, the scope and scale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars continues to grow - with exotic adventures and enhanced animation strengthening ties to the Star Wars Saga. Fearsome foes from the past return to settle the score. Unexpected alliances are formed on both sides of the battle, as the action explodes and the course of the war takes an unforeseen turn!

Often described as a mini-Star Wars movie each week, the next chapter of Star Wars: The Clone Wars begins with a must-see two-part premiere, airing at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT Friday, September 16 on Cartoon Network.

In "Water War," the spectacular -- and previously unseen -- ocean planet of Mon Calamari teeters on the brink of civil war. Separatist troublemaker Riff Tamson is stirring up hostile undercurrents between the planet's two native species, the Mon Cala and the Quarren. The Republic sends Senator Padmé and her Jedi and clone protectors to negotiate peace, but it's too late. With the assassination of the Mon Cala king, and young Prince Lee-Char not ready to unite his people, war is inevitable. A fierce underwater battle breaks out as SCUBA clones and new weaponry go head-to-head in an epic fight against overwhelming Quarren and Separatist forces.

"For these episodes we're really under water the entire time, which presented a lot of new challenges–not least of which was creating animation while keeping the characters buoyant," says supervising director Dave Filoni. "We wanted the cameras to feel like scuba cameras, and so the movements are slightly different than the ones you normally see in an episode. And the environment is populated with many small details such as a lot of coral and barnacles, which makes it feel as rich and dense as an ocean environment should be."

The premiere episodes showcase the feature film quality found throughout Season Four. "In one of the premiere battles, there are thousands of characters at war," Filoni says. "That gives you a sense of the scale we're trying to deal with now when we say we're doing a battle. In Episode III Revenge of the Sith we pan over the edge of the Jedi cruiser and reveal the massive space battle over Coruscant. That's the kind of thing we're aiming for in terms of combat in Season Four."

Directly following "Water War" is "Gungan Attack." Things look bleak for the Jedi, clones, and the Mon Cala, as they retreat to underwater caves following surprise Separatist attacks. Seeking to crush all hope of resistance, the evil Riff Tamson targets Prince Lee-Char. Jedi Master Yoda, unable to summon more Republic aid, turns to the powerful, amphibious Gungan army. But will they arrive in time and are they strong enough to break the Separatist siege?

"This season the fights reach a new level right from the get-go," Filoni says. "The things we experimented with in the past, which were maybe one or two acts of a battle, are now becoming a whole arc over three or four episodes. We're executing these battles on a scale not seen before. And while the battles are the big buzz this year, there will also be some surprises along the way."

[New post] A revived Cable sets his aim on the Avengers in upcoming X-Sanction

A revived Cable sets his aim on the Avengers in upcoming X-Sanction

dailypop | September 14, 2011 at 1:18 pm | Tags: cable x-men second coming, jeph loeb ed mcguinness, m-day | Categories: Uncategorized | URL: http://wp.me/p4kUt-34N

Nathan Summers, child of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Jean Grey (Phoenix), came from a possible future into his past in order to fight the forces of Apocalypse and Stryfe. An icon of the 1990's Rob Leifeld's Cable was all bulging muscles and little fanny packs strapped to his body. Nevertheless, he took off in a big way with readers and remains popular today.

When he was last seen in Second Coming, Cable was in a bad way. His body overwhelmed by the techno-organic virus, sacrificing himself so that his fellow mutants could live. While he was a big hit with readers when he was initially introduced, his last monthly series in which he protected the first mutant birth since M-Day, Hope, cemented in place his heroic character.

Of course, no one stays dead in the Marvel Universe, least of all mutants. The creative team behind the Red Hulk, Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness, have reunited to bring Cable back to life in a big way. The Cable Reborn series was announced earlier this Summer, but it was hinted that it was more complicated than just a revival of Cable.

Here are the details...

Following the release of a mysterious image yesterday that would seem to suggest the Avengers are in somebody's sights in December, Marvel held its latest "Next Big Thing" press conference call to reveal more details of this project, including who the creative team might be. CBR was on hand to bring you all the updates from the call.

Arune Singh, Marvel's Director of Communications, took on the role of moderator. SVP of Publishing Tom Brevoort, Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness were all on the call.

"'X-Sanction' is sort of the starting gun or the opening flare" for events coming up throughout the Marvel U, Brevoort said. Loeb added, "Ed and I were looking for, as we like to say, the next big thing, and I think a lot of folks who know my work know I have an enormous affection for Cable and not just his role in the X-Men universe but his role in the Marvel Universe proper." He also said he was "devastated" by Cable's death.

"I always saw Cable as the Captain America of the X-Men universe," Loeb said, a soldier out of his own time striving to help people.

He said McGuinness can convey "the Kirby power" inherent in Cable, noting that an important part of Cable's character is tempering power with heart. The heart of Cable's return will focus on the idea of "what do you do if you think something's going to happen to your daughter" -- Hope, of course, was raised by Cable, before Nathan Summers sacrificed himself.

As to how Cable's mission relates to the Avengers, Loeb said he "doesn't want to give away too much," but "how Cable survived 'Messiah Complex' and 'Second Coming' -- and I do consider those one big arc -- if there had been even a hint that the Avengers had something to do with Hope's future, he would... do something to them." Loeb was very cautious, but Brevoort was happy to be slightly more forthcoming with "X-Sanction" details.

Brevoort said the event puts Cable in conflict with characters readers aren't used to seeing him with. "The definition of Cable as a father out to protect his daughter by any means necessary gives the character a weight and heft you can relate to on a very human level." There are also "some larger situations going on" for both Nate and the Avengers.

McGuinness said he enjoys drawing these match-ups and team-ups that haven't been seen before.

Talking about his longtime collaboration with McGuinness, Loeb noted that their first project was the "Wolverine '96 Annual." "It's always dangerous to evoke someone who is a titan in our business as Jack Kirby is, but like Jack, with Ed McGuinness the pages are almost too small for the action he's putting down."

Loeb also noted aspects of "Commando" and "Terminator" in Cable's history, but praised McGuinness for being able to bring out the quiet moments, as well. McGuinness said working with Loeb is "like coming back home." "We're really symbiotic with some of the ideas," McGuinness added. "It's really fun to see some of the things I've suggested, he's taken and run with them and made them really cool."

The first press question was on accessibility. Loeb noted that, yes, every comic is some fan's first, but Cable also has a huge fanbase. "What you really want to know is that this man's daughter is in danger, and he will do anything to protect her -- that's all you need to know." He added, "It's the writer's responsibility to make it emotionally true," making "everything else fall together."

Asked if this would be action-oriented in the way Loeb and McGuinness' "Hulk" was, Loeb noted that Cable and Hulk are very different characters. "This is a story that has a beginning, middle and end, and a definite arc for who Cable is," Loeb said. But, "you are talking about a character who is very capable as a soldier, a strategist, and doesn't play by the same rules the other Marvel heroes do."

Cable is, Loeb confirmed, "a total badass."

[New post] Red Hulk spotted in new animated Avengers trailer

Red Hulk spotted in new animated Avengers trailer

Red Hulk

The latest series of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes will introduce new heroes, a new look, new threats and even new villains as well. The latest TV trailer spotlights some of these new foes but eagle eyed readers will notice a particular crimson-hued behemoth in the short teaser.

A fallen military hero, General Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross was transformed by the Leader into a gamma-irradiated monster much like the creature that he once hunted like a mad Ahab after his whale. The Red Hulk is capable of absorbing energy and expelling it in explosive bursts. Much as the green Hulk becomes stronger the angrier he gets, the Red Hulk becomes 'hotter' releasing more radiation as his rage increases.

It is theorized that the Red Hulk will be part of the upcoming Hulk animated series, but it is especially interesting to see him animated into action this Fall.

Double Breasted Coat by Tulle

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 10:15 AM PDT

Tulleplaidcoat

It's often tempting to shy away from bold colours when buying a heavy coat, opting for neutrals to wear with everything. For truly vintage-inspired looks, however, an injection of the right colour palette can be the most effective choice. This Double Breasted Plaid Coat by designers Tulle is anything but dull, yet still manages to keep an edge of classic design.

The large lapels, coupled with brass button fastenings on the double breasted front, creates a timeless silhouette. The addition of hip pockets and subtle tailoring creates a feminine shape, while at the same time remaining subtle enough to carry the bold plaid print in bright shades.

It's available online from Fred Flare for $113, now available to Pre-Order.

Heraldic Print Shift from Matalan

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 10:00 AM PDT

Heraldicdress

Often when the high street attempts to interpret the more psychedelic vein of sixties fashion, the result can be an overblown and cartoonish image. With a more Autumnal colour palette and some simplistic styling, however, Matalan have managed to create a more chic image in this Heraldic Print Shift Dress.

The shift shape is the ideal basic to carry a bold print, with a loose fitting shape and high neck offsetting the short hemline. The print has a real sixties feel, with the use of mustard, cream and brown shades in keeping with a great vintage feel.

It's available from Matalan now for £18.

eBay watch: 1960s Austin J2 camper van

Van1

It might need a bit of work on the interior, but this 1960s Austin J2 camper van will certainly set you apart from the rest of the mobile home traffic.

The best thing about it is the originality of the van. Built back in 1964, there's a lot here that is still faithful to that date, right down to the original cooker, fridge and sink. It's also sold with 'an array of old history', including service part lists, mechanical books, MOTs, bills, logs and much more. In short, you are getting the van and its past life.

Van2

According to the seller, the van has done less than 10 miles in the last 12 months, but has bee dry stored in that time. It is also down as an 'excellent runner' that 'starts first time' and 'drives well'.

The price of the van is £5,250, but the seller will take an offer - meaning you're likely to get it for much less.

Pilot ACE computer print

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 03:09 AM PDT

Joe oliver

Just as Kyle Bean recently showed us the evolution of the mobile, this new Pilot ACE print from Joe Oliver charts the development of computing technology over time.

Illustrated in an 8-bit style, it begins with the Pilot ACE computer which ran its first programme in 1950, and it runs through various devices until it reaches the iPod at the top of the pile. Something tells me that isn't the pinnacle of such technological development, but invest in this print now and it'll look even more retro ten years down the line.

The print costs £35.

Robot wallpaper from Studio Ditte

This robot wallpaper from Studio Ditte is perhaps the sweetest wallpaper that we've seen for a while.

Similar in style (though not subject matter) to their vintage plates paper, this paper is covered with a repeated image of robots. However, the shape of each robot is filled with a different print, sometimes based on Studio Ditte's own prints, given it a look that's less mechanical and more nostalgic.

The paper costs 135 euros a roll.

Every Piece in its Place Print

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 02:21 AM PDT

Tetris_Main_b_436x584
Mixing Soviet-era propaganda with retro gaming is a winning combination for this Every Piece in its Place print from Pop Chart Lab.

Their website claims it is a recently unearthed piece of Soviet propaganda that reveals the origins of the game Tetris, which would be brilliant if it was true, but as it is, it is a just a cool idea for a print. The style is very much that of Soviet propaganda posters (always great to look at, even if you didn't agree with the politics behind them) but the Nintendo Gameboy in the design gives the game away. The print has a limited first edition run of 500, each being signed and numbered by the artists.

Buy from Pop Chart Lab for $25.

1980s Fashion Print by Marnie Fogg

We've featured her 1950s print book (and mentioned its 60s counterpart), so I thought we should also cover Marnie Fogg's 1980s Fashion Print book for those whose favourite decade is the era of New Romantics, shoulder pads and excess.

Bold jungle florals, surfer and skateboarder motifs and bright neon feature heaily in 80s prints – this is not an era of subtle patterns. Chapter titles such as "Neon Blitz", "Glamazon" and "Catch the Wave" give a good indication of the sort of things covered. Even if many of the designs aren't to your taste, it is an interesting period because for the first time the prints were being created entirely by fashion designers rather than interior designers as in previous decades.

Buy the book from Amazon, priced £14.44.
