Hi Friends, While most of the world slows down in August and fans itself in the shade, the very capable staff at Road & Track is two strides into its busiest season. It begins with Monterey Car Week, which we're gearing up for this week. R&T will be serving oysters and champagne from our tent at the Quail: A Motorsports Gathering. If you haven't been to Monterey during this week every August, on Friday there is the Quail—far and away the best conclave of the most relaxed and sophisticated car collectors roaming amongst the most interesting collections of collector cars. And there are a handful of other notable events (for instance, the humble Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on Sunday), but really, you should get on the waitlist for the Quail and come slurp oysters with our staff and hundreds of other swells. We're also launching a new initiative, including our annual testing and awarding the Performance Car of the Year. Last year, the humble C8 Corvette Z06 walked away with the award; the previous year, the Porsche 911 GT3 eked out a close win over a rival American-made sports car. And we're adding a whole new awards program this year in the performance category. I can't say too much about it, except that I've installed a level 2 charger at my house in the Catskills and I'm getting a long-term loan of the fantastic Kia EV6 GT to bang around my hilly home backroads. We've also got the upcoming 4th annual Hudson Quattrocento rally. I feel like I've been talking about how magical this rally is for years (and I have, because it is), so I won't go on and on about it. We've also finished planning our slate of 2024 rallies, which include some golden oldies, and some stunning new rallies in wild new locations. Oh yeah, and there's also this magazine we put out every couple months, which I believe (I mean, I know it, deep in my core), is the best magazine in the world today. We're shipping pages to the printer right now of the next motorsports-themed issue, and it might be the best one yet. Stay tuned. "This piece was a great opportunity to read up on the fundamentals. We're talking about the new 911 GT3 RS here specifically, but this also covers the basics of chassis and drivetrain setup in track cars. I was amazed to learn how much the differential affects the car's behavior on corner entry. We tend to think that a locking diff is mainly there for getting power down on corner exit, but it makes a big difference in how the car rotates into the corner. "For the road portion of this test, I was given what most would call a "rental-spec" Mustang EcoBoost. While it wasn't totally bare bones, it didn't have much in the realm of options. The car was a convertible without any of the bigger wheels or bigger brakes from the performance package. Hell, it didn't even have paddle shifters, which I didn't think was possible in a Mustang with two pedals. It didn't take long for Autoweek senior editor Mark Vaughn and I to cook the brakes on a set of absolutely stunning California canyon roads. If you ever find yourself behind the wheel of a rental Mustang, going quickly is as easy as popping the transmission into 'L.'"

"When a PR company asks if you'd like an interview with multi-time Indy champion Dario Franchitti, you assume it's going to be a formal sit-down, maybe a group situation with several other journalists and a stern-faced handler who cuts in to say, "No comment," at all the best questions. Instead, we found ourselves at a small bistro table with just Dario and his wife, and after a few glasses of wine, we were sharing cellphone photos of our favorite cars and pets like we were old friends."

"Getting the opportunity to interview Jenson Button came as a wonderful surprise. I was invited to attend the NASCAR street race in Chicago and was given the opportunity to sit down with Jenson Button for roughly an hour the Friday before the race. As far as interview settings go, I've been to more intimate. Jenson and I simply pulled up a set of chairs in the back of the temporary media center while drivers and other media milled about around us. Ross Chastain even gave a press conference on the other side of the room. It's always exciting to get the opportunity to interview drivers, but some make it more pleasant than others. Jenson proved a charming interviewee with endless insight and good-natured conversation."
