SRC REUNION SHOW WAS FANTASTIC!

Posted: 26 Jun 2011 11:09 AM PDT

Kim's Hair by Rhonda

I began looking at the possibility of getting SRC to reunite two years ago when I had a house guest from Australia named Mark Sisto (vocalist of The Visitors). Mark is from Detroit but transplanted to OZ. He is the world's biggest SRC fan. Mark wanted to meet Gary Quackenbush.

I had just met Legendary guitarist Gary Quackenbush and so... for fun... we got Gary, Mark, Chris Box Taylor, Al King and Kimmer to film an impromptu session.

We ended up with one video of "Up All Night" and one cover of Radio Birdman's "Hand of Law" You can see them on Retrokimmer's Youtube Page if you like...

Steve Lyman

We met Steve Lyman next and began having long discussions about the history and legacy of SRC. Then a few weeks later... Patti Quatro introduces me to Scott Richardson. Through Scott I met Glenn Quackenbush keyboards and arrangements too. I purposely stood behind Glenn to film last night. I wanted to watch him play. Glenn really was fabulous.

Scott Richardson band leader/vocalist/songwriter

Scott has had a vast career since SRC broke up. He went to Hollywood, became a successful author and screenwriter. Scott married Robert Mitchum's daughter and that was a huge education for him as he will tell you! He wrote books, produced films and much much more...

Richard Blondy's Photos of SRC from last night are fabulous!

Guitarist Ray Goodman who took over after Gary Quackenbush's accident, took over the booking and production of this show. I did not produce any of it. I did hugely promote it however for two months at least and hammered it a lot in the past two weeks.

The show itself was just so much fun... Haven't heard those songs live since I was in the 8th grade. I did shoot 2 songs before the video police made me stop.... Got some great photos and we had 3 other great photographer friends of mine there as well. So check back to this story as I will add more photos this week.

CRISPIN CIOE: THE UPTOWN HORNS AND RADIO KINGS

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 05:57 PM PDT

Crispin Cioe

Kim: You should check out Crispin Cioe's whole site! . This is the guy, along with Richard Dishman (now w/George Bedard) from RADIO KING & HIS COURT OF RHYTHM. I'm REALLY surprised you weren't hip to this incredibly popular band from Ann Arbor, MI in the early 70s... (By the way,Crispin Cioe's last name is pronounced See-Oh) Jon Campbell

Well folks we did check out Crispin's whole site! Wow! What an amazing career this sax man has going on... We did a lot of checking...

Crispin Cioe (pronounced See-o) grew up in Chicago near legendary Maxwell Street, an outdoor mall which attracted late night impromptu jam sessions by Blues greats ranging from Muddy Waters to Willie Dixon. After a brief year in New York City, his family moved to Motor City.

"In the early '60s, Detroit was a center of rock 'n roll. Cioe's dad worked at one of the top 'rock' stations and he would spend hours looking through their record collections and hanging out in the studio while the deejays were spinning. One of the jocks also had an 'American Bandstand' type of TV show that I would hang out at with my friends." (Robin Seymour perhaps?)

Crispin does the fabulous sax solo in Living in America with James Brown....

"I knew I always wanted to be a writer, so I studied journalism at the University of Michigan/Ann Arbor. After my third year of college I realized what I really wanted to do and quit with only one semester left. I spent my money on a sax and music studies at Wayne State and the Berklee College of Music in Boston. When I ran out of cash I moved back home and joined a soul band called Radio King & His Court of Rhythm."

During the glam rock era of the early '70s recalls Cioe. "A local producer liked the Radio Kings and kept booking us to open for wildly inappropriate rock acts such as Aerosmith, REO Speedwagon and The Stooges. We were a soul band in satin basketball uniforms playing before a rock crowd of 3000. The promoter thought offering a "sacrificial lamb" made the crowd appreciate the headliner just that much more. Being regularly booed off the stage was unbelievably brutal.

New York Dolls

"One time we opened for the New York Dolls. David Johansen was watching us get pummeled by the audience from the side of the stage. As we abandoned the stage he said with this burning cigarette hanging from his mouth 'Tough luck, kid ….' The funny thing is, 8 years later, he walks into The Uptown Horns Party at Tramps and in that deep gravelly voice of his, shouts 'Detroit!' I couldn't believe he remembered."

And now almost 15 years later, The Uptown Horns are part of the house band and wrote the theme song for VH-1's new weekly comedy show "Buster's Happy Hour" starring Johansen as Buster Poindexter. "Life is funny that way," chuckles Cioe.

Crispin Cioe, Alto & Baritone Sax;
Arno Hecht,Tenor Sax;
Larry Etkin, Trumpet;
Bob Funk, Trombone.
Led by saxaphonist, Crispin Cioe, The Uptown Horns have recently made major contributions to The Driver's recordings and performances, as they have for these musical greats:

James Brown / The Rolling Stones (Steel Wheels & Live To The Max) Ray Charles / Buster Poindexter / Run DMC /Ohio Players / Joe Cocker / B.B. King / Robert Palmer /Lou Reed Bonnie Raitt / J. Geils Band / Howard Tate & so many more.

[New post] What IS a Comic Con?

What IS a Comic Con?

dailypop | July 20, 2011 at 3:41 pm | Tags: san diego comic convention, sdcc | Categories: comic books | URL: http://wp.me/p4kUt-2R9

The San Diego International Comic Con has begun with a parade of Stormtroopers, superheroes, pirates and vampires announcing its arrival. The SDCC has become a venue for video game developers, TV channels and feature film premiers. It has been argued that the comics have become a forgotten part of the event, but wasn't that the intention all along?

In 1974, 'It's a Wonderful Life' director Frank Capra chaired the San Diego Comic-Con that hosted such luminaries as cult icon Forry Ackerman, animator Bob Clampett, and cartoonist Charles Schulz. Founded by Shel Dorf, the Comic Con was a celebration of various media, not just comic books.

Shel joined Brosch and Jerry Bails and Ed Aprill and a few others, mostly students like Carl Lundgren who was co-chair, to start arranging for what Shel christened the "Detroit Triple Fan Fair" -- for fantasy literature, films, and comic art -- which was held July 24–25, 1965, at the Embassy Hotel on Cadillac Square downtown in Detroit. In the program booklet, Shel appears as "chairman," saying, in a Statement of Principles, that "by establishing this convention, we hope to bring together people" with an interest in preserving rare material and to foster "the appreciation of Comic Strips, Films, and Fantasy Literature as genuine Art Forms." Furthermore, "we hope to draw a close bond between the creative artist and his audience."
(More about Shel Dorf here)

(lots of amazing vintage photos here)

Of course today, the comic con is the subject of media attention as studios vie for exposure for their multi-million dollar projects. I'd prefer a hotel full of panels and actual long boxes of comics over the conference halls devoted to screenings and massive displays of the latest video games, but maybe I'm just old fashioned. It's a different creature than the humble beginnings back in the day, but it's actually not that far from the She Dorf's vision.

"Captain America" will play in San Diego for a full day before its nationwide opening Friday, and star Chris Evans is set to introduce the earliest screening. "Cowboys & Aliens" will hold its world premiere at Comic-Con on Saturday — a festival first. Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are coming to the convention to talk about "The Adventures of Tin-Tin"; Sony is offering a peek at "The Amazing Spider-Man"; and the "Twilight" trio — Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson — will again greet their fans at the Con.

TV-wise, "True Blood," ''Game of Thrones" and "The Walking Dead" are big draws, while new shows such as "Person of Interest," ''Grimm" and "Terra Nova" will present preview footage and introduce their casts in an aim to attract viewers before their fall premieres.

New video games are also expected to score big at Comic-Con, where players can get an early look at sci-fi shooters "Halo" and "Gears of War 3" and the latest "Batman" and "Spider-Man" games.

Back in the day, it was an entirely different affair that allowed fans of the comic book medium face time with their favorite creators. The video below details the memorabilia from the 1975 Marvel Comic Con, set to the roaring Marvel Comics theme.

[New post] Batman survives crash, wows West End audience

Batman survives crash, wows West End audience

dailypop | July 20, 2011 at 1:30 pm | Tags: batman live | Categories: Batman | URL: http://wp.me/p4kUt-2Rz

Via BBC:

Batman Live opened in Manchester on Tuesday and appeared to go smoothly after the Batmobile crashed on stage during rehearsals last week.

A spare was brought in from the city centre, where it was on public display.

Producers are keen to avoid comparisons with Broadway's Spider-Man musical, which has been beset by problems.

Unlike Spider-Man, the Batman show is not a musical, and the Batmobile's accident was minor in comparison to the problems that caused the opening of Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark to be postponed six times.

The Batmobile, created by Formula One designer Gordon Murray, crashed into part of the Gotham City set during a rehearsal.

"But we hope that won't ever happen again," Batman Live set designer Es Devlin told BBC News. "Luckily we had two [cars]. It wasn't good. You couldn't have put it on stage.

"It literally came out, swizzled around and crashed into the Bank of Gotham. The Bank of Gotham took a bit of a hit but we patched it up and I don't think anyone would notice.

"But the Batmobile, we had to rescue the one that we had sitting in the Printworks in Manchester."

In a rare attempt to stage a theatrical production in an arena, Batman Live tells the story of how Batman and Robin came to team up.

It makes use of acrobatics, aerial stunts and big screen effects and pits the caped crusader against his arch enemies including The Joker, The Riddler and The Penguin.

The show will be staged 87 times in the UK and Ireland between now and October, including 19 performances at the O2 in London. It will then visit Europe before reaching North America next August.

If it is a success, producers hope it will stay on the road until 2016.

It got a positive reaction from the crowd at the first night at the MEN Arena in Manchester.

"It's Cirque Du Batman meets David Copperfield meets a West End show," said Martin Ingham, 43, from Nottingham. "The acrobats are amazing but the screen is the star of the show with the effects they manage to put on there."

For sale: 1950s midcentury five-bedroomed house in London SW16

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 10:51 AM PDT

Mid1

An interesting property, not least because this midcentury five-bedroomed property in London SW16 is still very reminiscent of the era it was built. Unfortunately, it is being marketed with 'active planning permission for a complete redevelopment of the site', so it might not be staying that way.

But for now, let's enjoy its period glory, a period we are guessing is the 1950s - the agent gives no details of its heritage or the architect behind it. But one look at the exterior, the kitchen, the staircase, the wood flooring and the open-plan design of the place points us towards that particular era.

Mid2

Set in a 'superb location', the property has a 38' main reception room with dining area, study, fitted kitchen, utility room, master bedroom with balcony and en suite, four additional bedrooms, two bathrooms, two guest cloakrooms, numerous outbuildings with one housing pool machinery, a swimming pool and extensive gardens, as well as off-street parking.

Mid5

Modernisation is certainly necessary, but a sympathetic one rather than getting the bulldozer in. If you want to save it, you'll really have to shake that piggy bank hard - the price is £1,395,000.

The use of vegan materials doesn't mean the slightest compromise on style in this case, with the ruby red heels tapping into a very cute fifties and sixties aesthetic. The d'Orsay style sandals, complete with chunky ankle strap and heels, have an instant retro impact, with the bow vamp adding some extra kitsch appeal.

High Waisted Denim Shorts from Boohoo

Rebeccashorts

The weather across Britain may have taken a turn for the decidedly un-Summery, but that's no reason not to snap up some stylishly retro garb while it's on offer. This pair of Rebecca High Waisted Shorts from Boohoo are the sort of wardrobe staple that no fifties lover should pass up, regardless of season.

The tight fitting shorts have the ideal silhouette for a fifties pin-up chic, with a longer leg and turn-ups balancing the hip-hugging fit. The key to the vintage-look appeal, however, is the extra high waist, featuring matelot buttons for a hint of nautical fifties flair.

eBay watch: 1950s home cocktail drinks cabinet / bar

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 09:11 AM PDT

Bar

You want kitsch? We got Kitsch. In fact, it doesn't get much more kitschier than this 1950s home cocktail drinks cabinet / bar.

Screaming the era (especially when it comes to the outside design and shape), this period gem opens up, complete with working light, to expose all the accessories you need for knocking up a quick cocktail - two cocktail glasses, six stainless steel olive picks, a stainless steel lemon squeezer and a range of different coloured leaf design rubber coasters still in their original box. Nice. Two sliding doors at the bottom that open to provide space for your bottles too.

No in-depth details of condition, but obviously it will have some wear from the last 50 years or so. Doesn't look bad from the pictures though. Prices isn't bad right now either - just £1.04.

Loopy-L127-7503
The Loopy Coffee Table has been a best-seller for GillmoreSPACE since they started selling it in 2002. Whilst it isn't of a vintage origin, its style is very much of the 1960s.

Its name comes from the fact that its shape is a loop (rather than it being slightly crazy). It is available in matt white lacquer or an oak finish. The table is currently on offer with the oak priced £345 and the white £332.

Clover coasters from Pryl design

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 02:35 AM PDT

Clovercoasters

These clover coasters from Pryl design are almost too eyecatching for resting your cup of tea on.

Designed by Julia Nielsen for the Swedish company, the classic four leaf clover is transformed into a psychedelic design which looks like it has been drawn from the late 1960s, rather than 2011. The clover design comes in three eye-popping colours, all printed onto triangular laminated birchwood - perfect for cheering up a dull table or desktop.

A set of three costs £12.

Fall cushion

Katy Chard is a printmaker and designer whose retro influences clearly show in her work, including this Fall fabric cushion.

The beautiful colours and textures used on the cushion give it a 1950s look. Like some of the most famous textile designers from that period, Chard also is heavily influenced by the natural world - some of her other designs play with the patterns of trees, flowers and even fish.

This cushion design costs £40.
