The Golden Compass Book Review Video | The Opinion Of A Sensible Catholic Priest Posted: 14 Nov 2010 09:56 AM PST The Golden Compass movie recently premiered on U.S. television, much to the chagrin of the religious zealots who ruined it with their bitching from the sidelines while the film was still in production. However, this review of the His Dark Materials book trilogy that the movie was based on is rather sensible and unbiased, despite being made by a Catholic priest.
The Golden Compass movie was ruined because New Line Cinema changed the ending and other elements of the book to appease to vocal religious right in America. Because the story can be seen as anti-religious. This means there likely won’t be a sequel, and that’s particularly galling seeing as The Golden Compass ended on a cliffhanger: a cliffhanger that wasn’t present in the book. It’s rather telling that some religious people feel threatened in this way. I thought their faith would mean they’d be above all that? |
Amazing American Express Ad (Video) | Conan O’ Brien Goes To India For Commercial Posted: 13 Nov 2010 08:22 PM PST Conan is back on TV in more ways than one. Here he can be seen in a very elaborate American Express commercial shot in India. I highly recommend switching to the HD option if your computer can handle it- there are some breathtaking shots in here. The funniest part of the commercial has to be when he’s crushing up the berries and jumping up and down like a mad man. Conan may have been off the air for a year but he’s still got it! |
New Cigarette Warning Labels (Video) | The FDA’s New Graphic Anti-Smoking Tactic Posted: 13 Nov 2010 06:13 PM PST In 2009 the FDA was given the right to regulate the marketing and labeling of tobacco products. While I’m not a smoker by any means, these new warning labels they are proposing are a bit over-the-top. I hardly think that heavy smokers will be deterred from buying packs of cigarettes simply because they have scary images on them. The real problem is that smoking, for the most part, is still considered a “cool” thing to do. If the FDA really cared about the hundreds of thousands of people that die from cigarettes each year they’d work on educating the new generation of consumers in schools. |
Puking Girl On Plane Video | Sick!.. Literally Posted: 13 Nov 2010 04:42 PM PST Yes, it’s funny, but man do I feel sorry for that girl. Because that really can’t have been a pleasant experience.
The premise of this video is pretty simple and straightforward: Two girls are flying in a small plane when the pilot decides to demonstrate one of his maneuvers. Unfortunately, while one girl was enjoying herself, the other had her face in a sick bag vomiting at the time, and when the weightlessness kicked in, the puke flew back out of the bag and straight into her face. This is funny to see, naturally, but i can’t help feeling a little sorry for her at the same time. As well as for the girl sat next to her. Both will have struggled to get the smell of vomit out of their hair for a good few weeks. |
Cute Baby Dances to Florence and the Machine Video | Kid Goes Nuts for “Dog Days Are Over” Posted: 13 Nov 2010 03:04 PM PST I’m not really the kind of girl who fawns over babies. But even I can’t resist one with good taste in music. In this video we see little Embry’s tantrum dissolved by the powers of Florence and the Machine. Those tears spring up again if the volume is turned down, or once the tune ends. Thank goodness his mom can always start it again to avoid a full blown meltdown! |
Robert Louis Stevenson Biography Video As Google Celebrates Author’s 160th Birthday Posted: 13 Nov 2010 01:28 PM PST Today (Nov. 13) would have been Robert Louis Stevenson’s 160th birthday. And Google has celebrated the fact with a new Google doodle dedicated to the Scottish author.
The doodle is a tribute to Treasure Island, Stevenson’s most iconic book. Hence the pirates, treasure chests, and skull and crossbones. Stevenson also wrote Kidnapped, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and many other short stories, poems, and essays. This video is a school-produced look at Stevenson’s life and times, and is actually really well done. Don’t go expecting anything professional, but it’s fun and worth watching. Robert Louis Stevenson died at the tender age of just 44, which is too young for anyone. Still, thanks to his venerable talent and output throughout his short life, we have a full body of work to enjoy. |
