Slash Neck Dress from ASOS

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 10:14 AM PST

Slashneckdress

While the 1960s was all about sharp tailoring and structure, it was the seventies that saw a boost in creative draping and full fabrics from designers like Halston and the disco era looks. That was a trend that carried well into the 1980s, with looks much like this Slash Neck Dress from ASOS proving ever popular.

The use of stretch knitted fabric allows for seventies style draping in the batwing top to be perfectly counterbalanced by the sexier eighties sensibilities of the tight skirt and sleeves. The result is a dress that's vampish and glamorous, without being garish or clichéd. The colour options finish off the eighties feel, in dark coral pink and power blue.

Get yours from ASOS now for £35.

Mustard Contrast Satchel from Topshop

Mustardsatchel

For an instant shot of sixties looks, a well chosen colour palette can often be key. This Mustard Contrast Satchel from Topshop uses a great pairing of vintage shades in a leather look bag that has plenty of retro appeal.

The tapered, sloping sides add a sixties look to the classic satchel, creating a shape that has all the sharp and angular appeal of the decade's aesthetic. The use of mustard and rich brown faux leather together adds to the impact of a design that's instantly recognisable as a nod to timeless vintage looks.

It's available now from Topshop for £32.

eBay watch: 1960s Artifort swivel chair

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 08:29 AM PST

Artifort

Interesting item, although I'm not exactly sure of the model of Artifort swivel chair here.

According to the seller, this is the F978 chair, designed by Geoffrey Harcourt in 1968 and pictured here. I'm not convinced, but it's definitely of the era and branded Artifort on the rear of the base, so it's certainly a period item of quality.

Not perfect, with some pulled threads and the odd paint chip on the base (see description for close-up shots), but at £300, it's a lot cheaper than picking up a new vintage Artifort chair.

Re-issue of 1930s game Laripino

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 08:24 AM PST

LARIPINO
If you want to buy your kids a game that doesn't require an endless supply of AA batteries, you may want to look at this re-issue of the game Laripino.

The game dates back to the 1930s when it was manufactured by Spear's and operates on a very simple concept: players roll marbles down the helter skelter and are awarded different amounts of points depending on the hole the marbles land in. It's as straight forward as that. While this re-issue makes use of the original packaging to add to its nostalgic charm, whether your kids go for it or not is a different matter...

The game costs £8.

C'est magnifique
Want to add some European chic to a wall? Take a look at the C'est Manifique wallpaper for sale from Anthropologie.

The wallpaper is screen-printed with some charming retro-style illustrations of some of Europe's most famous landmarks. As its name might suggest, France - specifically Paris - is well represented with an illustration of the Eiffel tower. Look a bit closer and you'll also see the gondolas and bridges of Venice. Finally, bringing the subject matter slightly more up-to-date, the wallpaper also includes an illustration of the London Eye alongside traditional red buses and phone boxes.

Pretty and whimsical, the paper costs £58 a roll.

Northern

With all the hype surrounding the Soulboy movie still fresh, it's perhaps the perfect time to update a book on the subject of northern soul. That book is The Story of Northern Soul by David Nowell.

Published by Portico and now on the shelves (virtual or otherwise), it's essentially an updated version of the long out of print Too Darn Soulful, kicking off with the emergence of sould music in the mod clubs of the 1960s, working its way through the northern scene as it developed, throwing in some anecdotes, photos and flyers plus, in this new version, a chapter covering developments and changes since 1999, when the original book was first published.

Amazon has it in stock, with this 330-page book selling right now for just £7.67.

Myeggandsoldiers
My Egg and Soldiers set by Takae Mizutani and Sons is a product inspired by that childhood favourite of egg and toast soldiers.

The egg cup is shaped like a castle, but where this set is truly unique is that the toast gets its own container too - a horse-shaped cup, so they can look like toy soldiers going into battle.

The Egg and Soldiers set is available in either white or natural and costs £22.85 from Brighton Pod.
