Swifty 40th anniversary of Decimalisation limited edition prints

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 12:29 PM PST

Swifty

The 15th February 1971 saw the United Kingdom's currency change from the centuries old tradition of shillings and sixpence, to the new decimal currency of one hundred pence to one pound. 40 years on and the event is celebrated by these 40th anniversary of Decimalisation limited edition prints by Swifty.

Most of the coins have survived in some way or other, with the exception of the 'half penny', which was withdrawn in 1984 and is paid tribute to in the series of prints.

Take your pick from four striking colours, original bronze, orange, peacock blue and magenta, all hand pulled silk screen prints, signed and numbered by the artist, sized at 50 x 50cm and in an edition of only 40 per colourway. The price is £40 - or 8,000 half pennies!

Silk Polka Dot Dress by Tucker

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 10:06 AM PST

Tuckersilk

Much of the original style of the fifties and early sixties was based on a fresh-faced femininity, especially in the US mainstream. For a true vintage inspired look, there's little more effective than a well chosen dress like this Silka Pot Dot number by Tucker.

The designer's piece has plenty of luxury thanks to silk fabrics and expertly executed cut, while the look itself is subtle and stylish. The wrapped neckline with a tea dress style skirt creates a girly, yet conservative silhouette, while a red polka dot print adds some extra retro appeal.

It's available online from Matches Fashion for £435.

Floral Jumpsuit from Dorothy Perkins

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 10:01 AM PST

Snakejumpsuit
There's no denying that jumpsuits have made a huge comeback in mainstream fashion of late, with eighties revivalism as the driving force behind the return of the one-piece. There's plenty of inspiration left to plunder though, with seventies versions of the look.

This Floral Jumpsuit from Dorothy Perkins takes an unmistakeably seventies glance at jumpsuits with a unique silhouette. The culotte style wide-leg trousers, coupled with a halter neck bodice, create a chic disco-era silhouette. Using flowing fabric and a loosely fitting cut, this piece has a definite air of Halston inspiration.

It's available from Dorothy Perkins for £55.

eBay watch: 1980s Austin Mini Designer Mary Quant Edition in white

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 08:00 AM PST

Quant_mini

Yes, we have featured these before, but every example we have previously seen has been in black. This is a limited edition Austin Mini Designer Mary Quant Edition in white.

Around 1,000 were made in white back in 1988, but it's debatable how many actually survived, although a growing number are creeping onto eBay right now in varying condition, not so many in white though. Maybe time has been less kind to the lighter shade. This particular example has done just short of 70,000 miles in its time, with eight previous owners. All of the 'designer' features look to be there, but you might want to note that its had a 'full body refurb and brand new paint job', so not necessarily original. There's also new carpets, Cooper 'S' Minilite 12" alloys and new tyres as part of the deal.

Another shot over the page or check out the listing for many more. £1,030 is the current bid price.

Ten Great Years print by Max Dalton

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 05:51 AM PST

Max dalton print

You may remember Max Dalton's name from his great Cocktail party cut-out set we featured a while back. His new design Ten Great Years turns his attention to The Beatles.

It's a very simple concept - he's illustrated the Fab Four through all their musical and style evolution, giving an at a glance snapshot of the sixties. All the iconic looks of the band are on there, such as the Sgt. Pepper's military jackets, their Yellow Submarine characters or Paul barefoot in his Tommy Nutter Abbey Road suit. Yoko Ono even sneaks into the bottom row.

The print is available in a variety of formats and prices, starting at $56.99 for a small print on paper.

Arris

This MARK Arris armchair, available from John Lewis, is contemporary design but one with a distinctly mid-century feel.

This chair was designed by Gala Wright, one of the team at MARK, a Cornwall based furniture company, who also make their products within the county. That neat and angular frame is made from solid oak frame and the chair is upholstered in a striking lime fabric which enhances its retro feel. Like the look of this? There's also a two seater sofa available in a similar style.

The chair is available for £999 while the sofa costs £1500.

Trace Suspension Light

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 03:02 AM PST

Tracelight
Although designed in 2008, the Trace Suspension Light by Andrea Garuti, could be easily be mistaken for a design from the last century.

Where is differs from many true vintage designs and their imitators, is that rather than being made from plastic, this is made from a combination of white ceramic and white lacquered metal.

It costs just over £1,200 from Modenza.

Chrome Retro Alarm Clock

WCY3798_M1
Rather than being influenced by just one decade, this Chrome Retro Alarm Clock combines styles from various periods.

Its shape and chrome finish suggest 1950s design, whilst the glow-in-the-dark clock hands and the square typeface of the numbers looks more 1980s.

It is available to buy from Graham and Green, priced £40.

Conran Shop Marilyn Trunk

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 01:48 AM PST

Conran-Trunk
Truly the stuff of fantasy, the Conran Shop's Marilyn Trunk is the perfect piece of luggage for travelling by ocean liner from London to New York. Crafted from walnut wood and veneers in a 1920's style, the trunk is inspired by the golden age of transatlantic travel.

Realistically most of us are not really in need of such a fantastic piece of luggage but it does make a stylish and relatively compact dressing table measuring W55 x D63 x H113 cms. It has plenty of storage for make-up, toiletries and accessories and best of all,  a secret drawer to keep your jewellery in.

Living the Gatsby life doesn't come cheap - the trunk costs £2,395 and you can find it here.
