- Reviewing ideas and budgets for Planet of Giants DVD release.
Planet of the Giants (1964)
A Hartnell story that opened the program's second series, this is a fun adventure written by Louis Marks (later to write Day of the Daleks, Masque of Madragora and Planet of Evil). Centered mainly on special effects gimmicks, the story sees the TARDIS crew back on contemporary Earth only to find that they have been reduced to the size of ants. Trying to squash the schemes of a wily chemist to release a deadly insecticide on the world's population.

Nightmare of Eden (1979)
Not much can said in favor of this Bob Baker-penned story as it is generally regarded as a flop by most fans. However, it does feature some interesting special effects involving the fusion of the TARDIS to a spaceliner and the pocket dimension that the drug-runners use to transport their cargo. Perhaps Baker was missing out on not having his usual co-writer Dave Martin?
The goofy Mandrels will either bring a smile to your face or illicit numerous groans.

The 'Ace Box' title is a bit more mysterious as it could refer to two of the following or all three if 2entertain is that ambitious. If all three stories are being planned as a box set, that would finish up the McCoy era on DVD after Paradise Towers already scheduled for later this year.
Dragonfire (1987)
The first story to introduce Sophie Aldred as Ace, this adventure saw the departure of Bonnie Langford as Mel and the third appearance of Tony Selby as the space rogue, Sabalom Glitz. The production quality of this one is all over the place, but the main flaw lies in the lighting that reduces what could have been a dynamic story full of potential to pantomime.
Nevertheless, it has a stunning final moment in part four and is a rollicking treasure hunt as well. From the controversial series 24 that revamped the program entirely, this was a sign of things to come.

The Happiness Patrol (1988)
Graeme Curry's allegory of England under the rule of the Margaret Thatcher is a story that you either love or hate... and I adore it. Casting two actors that look at home in a children's program as the Doctor and Ace created a false sense of security for viewers. The pastel colors and child-like innocence of the program made stories like Paradise Towers and Happiness Patrol seem like homages to Road Dhal. Combining the horrific with the childlike, this is a wonderfully sophisticated and ambitious story. I hope that it is part of the box set planned as on its own, it may suffer from poor sales due to its negative reputation.

The Greatest Show in the Galaxy (1988)
One the classics of 80's Doctor Who, the second script from Stephen Wyatt (Paradise Towers) set inside a circus filled with killer robot clowns, zombies, a werewolf and evil Gods is perfection itself. I have a feeling that this story is scheduled for individual release as it has been requested by fans since the DVD range started.
