X-Men: First Class (trailer) |
Based on one of the most successful comic books on the market, 20th Century Fox's X-Men trilogy was the first attempt to produce an ensemble superhero film franchise. The third film may have been lacking, but I have yet to see a three for three film series based on comics or sci-fi to date. When the Batman films crashed and burned, it seemed that comic book flicks were over and done. Bryan Singer's X-Men movies opened the door of possibilities that made further big budget comic book adaptations possible, leading to Spider-Man, Iron Man, Batman Begins, etc.
Currently, Singer's taking a back seat to a massive reboot of the X-Men under director Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake). X-Men First Class will be going back in time to the 1960's, specifically the Cuban missile crisis, and showing how Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters and Magneto's Brotherhood were formed.
An ambitious project that hopes to get the X-Men back on track with similar films such as Avengers, Green Lantern and Batman, First Class has a lot of work cut out for it.
Michael Fassbender stars as Magneto, Rose Byrne plays Dr. Moira MacTaggert, January Jones plays The White Queen Emma Frost, Jason Flemyng plays Azazel. Nicholas Hoult plays Beast, Lucas Till plays Havok, Zoe Kravitz plays Angel Salvadore, Jennifer Lawrence plays Mystique, James McAvoy stars as Professor Charles Xavier. Other mutants include Darwin (Edi Gathegi), Banshee (Caleb Landry Jones) and (Tony Rich ) Mimic.
Kevin Bacon stars as Sebastian Shaw, the leader of the Hellfire Club, a secret organization set to take over the world.
X-Men: First Class premieres June 3rd, 2011.
