eBay watch: 1966 Triumph Herald 1200 Convertible

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 12:35 PM PDT

Herald

It's always a risk buying a classic car, especially if you're not too great under the bonnet. But this Triumph Herald 1200 Convertible looks a cool and practical buy if you are a novice.

Dating back to 1966 and still cutting a hip profile, this Herald has just over 80,000 on the clock of that 1,147c engine. It's also described as being in 'excellent condition', as well as 'trouble free' and in 'great working order'. That's perhaps down to the amount of money spent on it - overt £2,000 in the last year alone. See the website for a breakdown of just what has been replaced and upgraded.

Another shot over the page, with many more on the listing. The price right now is £2,200 with no reserve.

Drinks On Me Dress by Bettie Page Clothing

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 10:34 AM PDT

Drinksonme

While the large percentage of retro reproduction designs is dedicated to amped up evening looks, there's nothing quite like the perfect daytime dress to truly delight. This Drinks On Me Dress by Bettie Page is the perfect choice for those dreaming about picnic season.

This piece achieves the perfect balance between daring and demure with a strapless cut and scooped back, countered by a full skirt and high neckline. The bold print is kept from being garish with a selection of colourful but classic shades, with the red belt providing the perfect finishing touch.

It's available now from ModCloth for $101.99.

Leopard Cloche Hat from River Island

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 10:22 AM PDT

Leopardcloche
Many fashion designs which draw on a number of eras for inspiration can go wrong, with clashing influences sitting uneasily together. This Leopard Print Cloche by River Island, however, has done so with a result that's got great kitschy appeal.

The leopard print has a nod to styles from fifties pinup to seventies safari, while the cloche is traditionally pre-War as a hat shape. The wider brim, however, ties into the seventies aspect once more, creating a hat that's updated without losing it's retro roots to modern fashion.

It's available online from ASOS for £22.

Frantic by Frances Lynn, illustrated by Celia Birtwell

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 07:05 AM PDT

PB1446_1
Any fiction with a retro setting is always welcome here, but Frantic by Frances Lynn is particularly noteworthy as the book is illustrated by Celia Birtwell.

Frantic is about the exploits of a young woman in the early 1970s in London and San Francisco, a hedonist world of which Frances had first hand experience. She apparently got the idea for "Frantic" from hanging out in David Hockney's basement in the Seventies and her friendship with Celia Birtwell goes back to this period. You can buy the book from the usual book retailers, but if you buy it from Celia Birtwell's website, you will get a copy signed by the designer.

The book costs £8.99 from the Celia Birtwell website.

More than Words Limited Edition Marilyn Print

Images of Marilyn Monroe are so recognisable that they have gone beyond iconic and become rather clichéd. However, More than Words has given a new twist to the familiar by recreating the image using typography.

The limited edition Marilyn print is made up of one of her famous quotations, ""I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes. I'm out of control and at times hard to handle, but if you can't handle me at my worst then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best." The print is limited to 250 copies, but is available in a choice of sizes (30cm, 40cm or 70cm square). Prices start from £85 for the smallest framed print.

Guzzini

We've featured many of Guzzini's products before and their products which all have a definite space age feel. This biscotto container is no exception.

Made from moulded plastic in that classic 1970s shade of orange, it measures just over 20cm diameter and looks like it could hold a lot more than biscotti. Put it out next to Guzzini's classic Stella ice bucket and you can easily add a 1960s/70s look to any home.

The container costs £15.96.
