Stripe Bustier Bikini from Urban Outfitters Posted: 04 Jul 2011 10:15 AM PDT The 1970s was undoubtedly a decade of indulgent luxury, with the birth of the disco era and the popularity of decadent holidays in the Riviera sunshine. With that comes a striking fashion aesthetic that's captured well in this Stripe Bustier Bikini from Urban Outfitters. The two piece manages to capture a contrasting hyper-femininity at the same time as creating a structural silhouette, capturing that later seventies love of daring shapes. The mix of stripe directions highlights the seaming structure, while the lines are kept clean and simple enough to carry the design. It's available now from Urban Outfitters UK for £35. |
Peaked Cloche Hat by Diane von Furstenberg Posted: 04 Jul 2011 10:00 AM PDT To easily achieve a genuine vintage look from any outfit, accessories are often the quickest and most effective way, regardless of the trend you are tapping into. This Peaked Cloche Hat from Diane von Furstenberg lends an instantly sixties feel to any outfit, without lacking subtlety or classic looks. The hat takes a classically pre-War cloche style and gives it a sixties update, with a more structural shape and the addition of a pageboy style short peak. Finished in a luxurious burgundy felt fabric, with gold hardware, the result is a piece that captures all that felt modern and chic in the sixties. It's available online from Matches Fashion for £125. |
The Seventies Unplugged by Gerard De Groot Posted: 04 Jul 2011 06:19 AM PDT The Seventies Unplugged: A Kaleidoscopic Look at a Violent Decade takes an episodic approach to the decade, looking at some of the major political events around the world. In his introduction, De Groot writes that he wanted to move away from the stereotypical view of the 1970s as not being as good as the 1960s, but found that the theme that dominated his research was how violent the decade was. With chapters on dictators, terrorists and Vietnam, it is a pretty serious read and certainly not your typical beach book (although I read it on my recent holiday). It is available in paperback from Amazon, priced £5.84 |
eBay watch: 1970s extra large Guzzini-style pendant lights Posted: 04 Jul 2011 06:15 AM PDT Yes, I know we did something similar yesterday and we do try to vary things when possible, but I've just spotted these 1970s extra large Guzzini-style pendant lights online, which are absolutely stunning. |
Posted: 04 Jul 2011 06:06 AM PDT The boxset comprises 20 lithographic postcards, each featuring a different collage of the city inspired by antique souvenir postcards. Typical Blake motifs such as butterflies, circuses, magic and crowds feature in the designs. The boxset costs £25 from the Polite Shop. |
Checked wool shift dress from Bally Posted: 04 Jul 2011 03:48 AM PDT Summer doesn't have to be all about ultra-feminine floral frocks. This Checked wool shift dress from Bally is mod chic at it's best. The simple shift shape is lifted from the everyday with the addition of the high turtle neck, whilst the traditional black & white check keeps it firmly anchored in it's 60s roots. £525 from Net-a-Porter. See the website for more details. |
Paul Smith cassette-style case for iPhone 4 Posted: 04 Jul 2011 02:58 AM PDT We've featured many products inspired by the humble tape in the past but this cassette-style case for the iPhone 4 has got to be the classiest yet - mainly because its got Paul Smith's name on the label. Produced in collaboration with Apple, it uses a simple design of a cassette printed onto a leather case. Take a look at the label scribbled with 'Side A' and you'll see the Paul Smith name there, written out in simple type. As you might expect the use of the designer name adds to the price tag too: this case costs £89.95. Buy it from the Apple Store |
Factory desk lamp from Idyll Home Posted: 04 Jul 2011 02:55 AM PDT If you're after an industrial style lamp, you're in luck as there are lots on offer at the moment. The latest example to come to our attention is this Factory desk lamp, available from Idyll Home. The colour on this image is a bit misleading - it's actually white enamel used for the curved shade and base. Couple that up with an an adjustable chrome arm and you've got a lamp that's extra practical, as well as stylish. This lamp costs £189. Buy it online |
