Switched On Set back and updated Posted: 19 Jul 2011 12:34 PM PDT Ok, it's not really gone anywhere, but we've not been able to update Switched On Set as much as we'd like in the past - but all that changed from last weekend. |
For sale: 1950s midcentury five-bedroomed house in London SW16 Posted: 19 Jul 2011 10:51 AM PDT An interesting property, not least because this midcentury five-bedroomed property in London SW16 is still very reminiscent of the era it was built. Unfortunately, it is being marketed with 'active planning permission for a complete redevelopment of the site', so it might not be staying that way. Set in a 'superb location', the property has a 38' main reception room with dining area, study, fitted kitchen, utility room, master bedroom with balcony and en suite, four additional bedrooms, two bathrooms, two guest cloakrooms, numerous outbuildings with one housing pool machinery, a swimming pool and extensive gardens, as well as off-street parking. Modernisation is certainly necessary, but a sympathetic one rather than getting the bulldozer in. If you want to save it, you'll really have to shake that piggy bank hard - the price is £1,395,000. |
Crimson and Bow-ver Heels from ModCloth Posted: 19 Jul 2011 10:24 AM PDT The hunt for clothing that has both killer looks and ethically sourced fabrics at once can be a painstaking process, especially when it comes to leather accessories. Providing a rare find in footwear, however, are these Crimson and Bow-ver Heels from ModCloth, made from a vegan-friendly faux leather fabric. The use of vegan materials doesn't mean the slightest compromise on style in this case, with the ruby red heels tapping into a very cute fifties and sixties aesthetic. The d'Orsay style sandals, complete with chunky ankle strap and heels, have an instant retro impact, with the bow vamp adding some extra kitsch appeal. Get yours from ModCloth now for $47.99. |
High Waisted Denim Shorts from Boohoo Posted: 19 Jul 2011 09:39 AM PDT The weather across Britain may have taken a turn for the decidedly un-Summery, but that's no reason not to snap up some stylishly retro garb while it's on offer. This pair of Rebecca High Waisted Shorts from Boohoo are the sort of wardrobe staple that no fifties lover should pass up, regardless of season. The tight fitting shorts have the ideal silhouette for a fifties pin-up chic, with a longer leg and turn-ups balancing the hip-hugging fit. The key to the vintage-look appeal, however, is the extra high waist, featuring matelot buttons for a hint of nautical fifties flair. Get yours from Boohoo now for just £15. |
eBay watch: 1950s home cocktail drinks cabinet / bar Posted: 19 Jul 2011 09:11 AM PDT You want kitsch? We got Kitsch. In fact, it doesn't get much more kitschier than this 1950s home cocktail drinks cabinet / bar. |

Mr Wingate Chair Stripe Designs Posted: 19 Jul 2011 06:45 AM PDT Pictured here is the Chair Stripe Cushion, but the design is also currently available on an apron. The design consists of rows of illustrations of classic chair designs, printed in black on a cream cotton background. The cushion costs £40 (including the cushion pad) and the apron costs £21. Buy them from Mr Wingate's shop on Not on the High Street. |
Posted: 19 Jul 2011 06:28 AM PDT Its name comes from the fact that its shape is a loop (rather than it being slightly crazy). It is available in matt white lacquer or an oak finish. The table is currently on offer with the oak priced £345 and the white £332. Buy it online at GillmoreSPACE. |

Clover coasters from Pryl design Posted: 19 Jul 2011 02:35 AM PDT These clover coasters from Pryl design are almost too eyecatching for resting your cup of tea on. Designed by Julia Nielsen for the Swedish company, the classic four leaf clover is transformed into a psychedelic design which looks like it has been drawn from the late 1960s, rather than 2011. The clover design comes in three eye-popping colours, all printed onto triangular laminated birchwood - perfect for cheering up a dull table or desktop. A set of three costs £12. Buy them from Hunkydory Home |
Katy Chard Fall fabric cushion Posted: 19 Jul 2011 02:30 AM PDT Katy Chard is a printmaker and designer whose retro influences clearly show in her work, including this Fall fabric cushion. The beautiful colours and textures used on the cushion give it a 1950s look. Like some of the most famous textile designers from that period, Chard also is heavily influenced by the natural world - some of her other designs play with the patterns of trees, flowers and even fish. This cushion design costs £40. Buy it online |
The Smurfs Smurfette Plush Toy from Firebox Posted: 19 Jul 2011 01:12 AM PDT The Smurfs may be a distant blue memory to you, but this Smurfette Plush Toy from Firebox is proof positive that they will be making an imminent return to our screens. Simpsons luminary Hank Azaria and Dougie Howser MD himself, Neil Patrick Harris (another eighties throwback) accompany none other than Katy Perry who voices the aforementioned Smurfette in this 3D live action/CGI family movie. The toys cost £14.99 each and are available from Firebox here. |
