Old Bamboo Bag from Ollie & Nic

The satchel has made a big comeback in mainstream bag design of late, with a huge variety of versions popping up everywhere. Taking much of the appeal of that heritage bag design, this Me Old Bamboo Bag from Ollie & Nic takes variety one step further.

The body of the holdall has a boxy, old school satchel feel, while the addition of a short and stiff bamboo handle adds something new without compromising the classic appeal. In a great shade of tan leather, there's an instant retro feel, with gold buckle fastening too.

It's now available online from Ollie & Nic for £55.

Silk Waterfall Dress from French Connection

Waterfalldress

A simple way to creating a true retro impact from fashion is to keep the design classic and simple, relying on the cut and draping to flatter the silhouette. That simplicity works best with well chosen fabrics, like in this Silk Waterfall Dress from French Connection.

The rich navy silk fabric does all the work, allowing for effortless draping of the dress across the body. The waterfall sleeve detailing adds some high end flair to a classic forties-inspired tea dress shape, creating eveningwear with real vintage credentials.

It's available from French Connection now for £135.

Various incarnations of Ercol's Studio Couch have appeared here in the past, from vintage versions to anniversary re-issues.

The latest combines the classic Lucian R Ercolani design with fabric by Donna Wilson, another name that should be familiar to regular readers. The couch is made from beech with the cushions upholstered in Donna Wilson and SCP's Nos Da fabric, which looks as if it comes from the 1950s too. It is currently on sale priced just over £2,130 (having previously been £2,450).

You can take a closer look at it on the SCP website, although you can't buy it directly online. Note that SCP also has the retro-styled Donna Wilson Mabel sofa in its sale. You can find out about that here.

Content by Conran Aspen Armchair

Design inspired by Danish and Swedish furniture from the past continues to pop up on the high street, which is no bad thing.

John Lewis's Content by Conran range currently includes this Aspen Armchair. The chair's distinctive shape is midcentury style at its best. It has slim arms, sled legs and is upholstered in a bright yellow fabric called "Starfruit", which may not be everyone's first choice of colour, but it works well with this design.

It costs £1,095 from John Lewis.

eBay watch: 1958 Renault Dauphine car in original condition

Ren1

At first glance, you might think this is one of the retro Nissan reissues like the Figaro or the Pao, but this is far older and out of France - the Renault Dauphine.

It dates back to 1958 and literally screams the era, not least because it looks largely unchanged since first hitting the road. It might well have been thrown back in time. Its amazing looks are perhaps down to it being dry stored in France for the last 30 years. Not just about the  looks either, with the floor and chassis in 'excellent condition' and the 947c engine in 'perfect mechanical order'. Apparently 'everything works', according to the seller.

Things to note are it being left-hand drive, a tear being present on the driver's seat and a need for a 'very light respray' due to some blemishes on the bodywork. Not bad for 53 years. There is interest in it, but the price right now is still only £1,414.95. See the dashboard over the page or see the listing for a pile of images and more details.

Retro mirror from Next

Posted: 02 Aug 2011 03:08 AM PDT

Retro mirror

A seemingly unlikely source of mid-century influenced design, this retro mirror comes from Next.

It's a nice change to see a mirror that looks to the 50s and 60s without resorting to a starburst style design. This mirror has a rectangular frame with a curve to the inside edge of the frame that gives it more of a softer look. The quality of the material reflects its high street origins - it's 'oak effect' but the mirror is pretty good looking nonetheless.

The mirror costs £99.

Rubber Duck shower curtain from Bliss

Posted: 02 Aug 2011 03:08 AM PDT

Bliss curtain
One of bathtime's oldest companions gets honoured in this Rubber Duck shower curtain from Bliss.

It's a normal plastic shower curtain that's been brightened up with the repeated image of a charming yellow duck. If you haven't heard of Bliss, they make rather expensive spa type products and have a chain of rather expensive spas - so this design seems a bit of an unlikely match for them. However, who can argue when the result is as fun as this?

The shower curtain costs £20.
