Doctor Who U.N.I.T. DVD box set on the way |
As the conclusion to the 2 entertain line of classic Doctor Who line of DVDs looms, that amazing resource of Doctor Who news and rumors, Eye of Horus has announced a rather exciting box set. If true, this will account for several stories all in one go.
Faced with declining ratings and a demand from the BBC to cut costs, the organization called U.N.I.T. was invented as a key component toward the experimental seventh series that would overhaul the program for a new generation... in color, no less. A crack team of soldiers tasked with handling the unexplained threats from beyond the stars or beneath the Earth, U.N.I.T. was led by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart along with Sergeant Benton and Captain Yates as recurring supporting officers.
Facing Cybermen, demons from beyond space, Machiavellian masterminds, Daleks and creatures from the bottom of the sea, U.N.I.T. became a popular part of the Doctor Who mythology. A box set combining several U.N.I.T.-centric adventures could be the perfect holiday gift.

BBC DVD will be producing a boxset of CLASSIC SERIES DVDs featuring yet to be released stories featuring UNIT. Whilst there is no release date, eyeofhorus.org.uk suggests that January 2012 would be appropriate.
Option for content include:
THE DÆMONS
INVASION OF THE DINOSAURS
TERROR OF THE ZYGONS - highly likely
THE ANDROID INVASION - highly likely
Due to production problems it is less likely to include AMBASSADORS OF DEATH or THE MIND OF EVIL.
The Jon Pertwee classic The Dæmons is one of my absolute favorite adventures. Long overdue for DVD release, this story is surely on its way on DVD shortly. For my review, click here.
I know that Invasion of the Dinosaurs gets some flack from fans, but I have always held it in high regard. The script by Malcolm Hulke is cracking and the Doctor facing off against an army of dinosaurs is a great idea. The rubber monsters are as dodgy as the science involved, but this remains one of my dearest favorites.
The two Tom Baker era stories, Terror of the Zygons (click here for my review) and Android Invasion are beasts of different cloths. While Terror of the Zygons is a time-honored Gothic horror story with alien invasion elements, Android Invasion is not author Terry Nation's strongest script. Nonetheless, the location work and chemistry between Tom Baker and Lis Sladen makes it a worthy addition.
