Collarless Coat from Marc by Marc Jacobs Posted: 14 Sep 2011 10:15 AM PDT When the bigger budget designers tackle a classic and timeless 20th century look, there's nothing quite so effective thanks to their access to luxury fabrics and master tailoring. This Wool Angora Collarless Coat from Marc by Marc Jacobs captures a sixties look that does simplicity with undeniable style. The straight-bodied shape of the coat could look uncultured in the wrong hands, but with the use of the high quality wool and angora blend fabric it creates a striking silhouette. Creating an instant sixties feel, the collarless neckline and double breasted buttons add true vintage flair to this item. It's available online in the UK from Matches Fashion for £530. |
Blossom Print Dress from Wallis Posted: 14 Sep 2011 10:00 AM PDT If the 1960s in fashion was all about daring colour injections, the seventies interpretation of that trend brought with it an altogether more muted use of prints and shades. This Blossom Print Dress from Wallis shows the influence of the crossover of the two decades, with a relaxed and folky take on florals. The use of a chiffon-look fabric lends itself well to the bell sleeves and flowing skirt, with a tie-belt at the waist to create shape. The combination of a bright orange floral backed with black takes the colour palette into the seventies, still retaining an effortless retro feel. It's available now from Wallis for £48. |
Gold Leather Metallic Mini Skirt from River Island Posted: 14 Sep 2011 08:11 AM PDT Winter fashion purchases are tricky; a coat or a pair of boots requires careful thought and considerable expenditure. Take your mind off such worries with this Gold Leather Metallic Mini-Skirt from River Island. As well as having that classic flattering retro a-line shape, the skirt nails two winter trends at once, being both metallic and 100% leather. It might not sound like a wardrobe staple, but gold will go with anything and this skirt would look great with a jumper and flat boots or colourful heels and a sheer blouse. The skirt costs £50 from River Island - check it out here.

This Is Design screenprints by Bibliotheque for the Design Museum Posted: 14 Sep 2011 04:19 AM PDT Iconic designs come in all shapes and sizes, some of which we tend to take for granted. However, some of those less-appreciated designs are belatedly celebrated in both an exhibition and these This Is Design screenprints by Bibliotheque for the Design Museum. The exhibition, also called This Is Design, can be found right now until January at the Design Museum. The associated screenprints are unlikely to last that long.Three images to choose from - David Mellor's design for the National Traffic Light system (dating back to 1966), the road and motorway signage system designed by Jock Kinnier and Margaret Calvert (between 1957 to 1967) plus Dr Alex Moulton's small-wheeled bicycle (1962). |
eBay watch: 1970s Sankyo 401C flip alarm clock Posted: 14 Sep 2011 04:04 AM PDT Want a blast of retro to greet you every morning? You need to invest in this 1970s Sankyo 401C flip alarm clock for the side of your bed. It is pure 1970s in both style and (especially) colour. Yes, bright orange for that plastic casing. The current price is just £1. |
Midcentury-style Gordon Floor Lamp at Graham and Green Posted: 14 Sep 2011 03:28 AM PDT Very much in the style of the Arne Jacobsen AJ floor lamp comes this Gordon Floor Lamp at Graham and Green. We have featured its little brother (also known as the table lamp) in the past, but now you can get the taller version, which looks equally as stylish. To be fair to the Gordon floor lamp, it does have its own look, a more vintage look than the AJ, which dates from 1960. If you are a fan of a 1950s look, this should fit into your home perfectly. As with the table lamp, we're talking a metallic frame with a conical shade for directing the light. Also, like the table lamp, we're talking good value too, at least when compared to the Arne Jacobsen reissues. It comes in at around half the price, retailing for £250. Limited Edition Vintage Inspired Charms from Pedlars Posted: 14 Sep 2011 02:36 AM PDT There's something incredibly appealing about charm bracelets. It's the idea of starting out with a plain bracelet and gradually adding charms over time to make a piece of jewellery which is a miniature personal history. Pedlars have been collecting charms for a number of years and have drawn inspiration from the best of their collection to create a series of limited edition charms. Each charm is sterling silver and oxidised to give it that vintage patina. The first four designs are a swan, a scottie dog, a horse guard and a postbox, limited to an edition of just 100. The belcher bracelet costs £129 and the charms £59 to £69 each. Find out more on the Pedlars site. |
Posted: 14 Sep 2011 01:55 AM PDT The case is shaped like a camera, but with exposed stitching to give it a folksy homemade feel. It is available in black and grey or black and ruby. It measures 11cm (W) x 7cm (H) x 2.5cm (D) so you will have to look at your camera specifications to check it will fit. The case costs £12 from Urban Outfitters. |
Posted: 14 Sep 2011 01:43 AM PDT The blurb describes the sofa as compact and ideal for hallways, receptions or bay windows, but living in a more modest sized home, I think it would be great in my lounge. It is available in two sizes: two-seater (H 85 W 180 D 60cm) or three-seater (H 85 W 220 D 75cm) and with a choice of upholstery and wood finishes. Prices start at £2,546 for a two-seater with microfiber fabric upholstery and go up to £3,310 for a three-seater with leather. Visit Ivor Innes for full details. |
