Graphic Print Shift Dress from Oasis Posted: 11 Oct 2011 10:10 AM PDT The influence of graphic prints and bold designs really came to the fore of womens fashion during the 1960s, and the use of structural lines and patterns is still reminiscent of that era. This Graphic Print Shift Dress from Oasis perfectly captures that look, making vintage style truly wearable today. The use of varying stripe widths and directions helps to create an unusual effect, adding the illusion of shape to this basic shift dress. In a bold monochrome palette, its simple enough to carry the bold pattern too. With a high neckline and sleeveless cut, the details all combine to create that originality and androgyny so loved in modernist sixties design. It's now available from Oasis for £60. |
Simmons Clutch from French Connection Posted: 11 Oct 2011 09:55 AM PDT This Autumn/Winter the high street's retro influence of choice appears to be the art deco influence of the twenties and thirties. The ideal choice for injecting some glitz and glamour into Winter wardrobes, this Simmons Clutch from French Connection interprets the style with flair. The delicate fan shape of the clutch provides an instant shot of art deco design, with the twenties influence going further thanks to the addition of a shimmering silver sequin and bead design. The bag is delicate enough to pair with a chic evening ensemble, injecting roaring twenties glamour with ease. It's available now from French Connection for £75. |
Posted: 11 Oct 2011 08:47 AM PDT The Peter Bowles design has the usual porcelain shade, chrome stand and glossy black base, but the detail of the black and white cotton-braided flex is picked out in the striped shade. It' a chic accessory that will add some retro forties style to a desk or corner table. The lamp costs £145 from Bloomsbury Store here. |
eBay watch: 1970s space age Rotobar by Curver Brunssum Posted: 11 Oct 2011 06:12 AM PDT Good spot by Andrew Graham, this 1970s space age Rotobar by Curver Brunssum, which is up for sale on eBay. The design is something of a space classic and now highly sought after, not too many are around in complete condition some 40 years on. This one even has the grey drinks tray, which is the component that usually goes walkabout. Of course, there's also plenty of room for your bottles and glasses - see the period photo below for the bar 'in action'.In terms of condition, that is described as 'excellent', with the plastic body 'virtually unfaded', although the top has faded a little and has light surface marks down to age, as well as a tiny chip (close up shots on the listing). The steel rivets and chrome also in good condition. Price? Not cheap at £499.99 on a 'buy it now'. But try finding one elsewhere - they don't come up often. Find out more at the eBay website |
Adidas x Noel Gallagher Training 72 NG trainers Posted: 11 Oct 2011 04:22 AM PDT Over on our His Knibs site, we spotted a pair of these over on eBay some weeks back, Well, this collaboration has just had an official launch - the Adidas x Noel Gallagher Training 72 NG trainers that is. The shoes are a new version of the Training 72 (which actually dates back to 1964), but now becoming the NG version, which offers up a white leather upper, royal blue stripes and gold detailing on the tongue, along with a fairly chunky gum sole. Not seen these on a retail site as yet, but they're due out on the same day as Noel's debut album (High Flying Birds), which comes out on October 17th. When we get a price or see a pre-sale, we'll let you know. We suspect very limited though, so you'll probably want to be quick off the mark when they do land. As long as you are a Noel fan obviously. Based on an original vintage design, the dress is made of pink gauze, heavily beaded in an intricate fan design. The ornate bodice has a dropped waist which gives way to a delicate shimmering skirt. All too often the phrase "investment piece" is used to justify buying something way outside your usual budget (and this dress is not cheap at £325) but if you're a fan of flapper style you'll have to agree that this frock gets it absolutely spot on. Posted: 11 Oct 2011 03:05 AM PDT Think Swatch and you'll probably think of the Eighties. Anyway that's what era Hanna Melin has focused on with her new Swatch print, based on her own 1980s collection. It's not the first time Hanna has plundered her childhood for her work, you may remember her Summer Holiday 1989 bag from a while back, or her childhood ABC print. This digital print is every bit as colourful as the watches it depicts, and is sure to brighten up any room. A great affordable piece of artwork, it will set you back £14. Tosh's team retro melamine set from Bouf Posted: 11 Oct 2011 03:05 AM PDT Cast your mind back and you may remember the London Folk Mugs - a bit of a mystery as to their designer, other than they looked really good. Well now all becomes clear. They were designed by Tosh and the same characters also crop up on this Team retro melamine set, available from Bouf. That same late 60s look is at work here, using the stylized characters of a guard, policeman and a yeoman across a five piece melamine set. The graphic style is enhanced by the bold red and blue rings around the plates. The set even comes in its very own groovy pvc bag. If you like this look, check out Tosh's other products all which have a strong nostalgic British feel. £11.17 will buy you the set. Buy it from Bouf.com |
Posted: 11 Oct 2011 02:55 AM PDT The design by Paula Scher dates back to 1979, but the poster has been created especially for the V&A Shop. It is being sold in connection with their current Postmodernism exhibition. It features the names of artists and groups who you (knowing more about jazz than me) will probably know were at their peak in the 1970s. The look of the poster itself is very much of the 1970s with the typography straight from old album covers. The poster will fit a 50 by 70cm frame and costs £20 from the V&A Shop. |
Terence Conran - The Way We Live Now at Design Museum, London Posted: 11 Oct 2011 02:37 AM PDT The exhibition traces his career, which has spanned an impressive number of decades and styles, from post-war austerity right up to the present day, taking in the Festival of Britain, Pop Culture and 80s design book along the way. The exhibition includes a collection of Conran's own pieces from the late 1940s and 1950s, when he was welding steel chairs himself, designing textile designs, ceramics and magazine covers. Another highlight is the Habitat story, which will include the reconstruction of one of the room sets shown in the Habitat catalogues. The exhibition runs from 14 November to 4 March. For further information, see the Design Museum website. |
