High-Waist Jeans from American Apparel Posted: 12 Oct 2011 10:15 AM PDT There's always plenty of choice out there for fifties lovers who favour dresses and skirts, but for a more relaxed take on the era's style it can be a trickier shopping trip. That's what makes these High-Waist Jeans from American Apparel worth a look, with a classic shape that you'll want to pair with everything. The high rise waist faithfully reproduces the classic jeans shape seen from the fifties right through to the seventies, hugging the hips and creating a small waistline. This pair's straight legs lend well to being worn as turn-ups, too, for a hint of rockabilly chic. Get yours from American Apparel now for £70. |
Posted: 12 Oct 2011 10:00 AM PDT This season's high street ranges promise plenty of 1920s influence in time for the usual glitz of Winterwear, providing an ideal choice in eveningwear for retro lovers everywhere. This Sequin Cami Top from New Look has a strong twenties aesthetic without falling for the same old clichés. The loose fit cami vest fits well with the inspiration, accentuating the decollétage and creating a somewhat androgynous silhouette. The colour palette of nude fabric, embellished with black and silver keeps the influence going, with the deco influenced shapes and lines clearly seen in the sequin pattern throughout. It's now available from New Look for £26.99. |
Retro Ceramic Pendant from MeOldChina Posted: 12 Oct 2011 08:52 AM PDT If you're a fan of the bright retro designs of sixties and seventies tableware you'll appreciate this clever re-purposing of ceramics as jewellery. Originally from the UK, designer Lucy King now lives in Melbourne, Australia, where she hunts out second-hand china to create her one-off pieces. Each pendant is carefully cut from a plate, hand-sanded and finished before being assembled into a unique piece of jewellery. The pendant featured is made from a British seventies dinner plate with the pattern name "Tyrol" and can be yours for £49.20. Find out more and check out the other designs in the collection at the MeOldChina Etsy shop here. |
Pick 'n' Mix tea towel from Mr PS Posted: 12 Oct 2011 05:13 AM PDT We've got a bit of a sweet tooth here at Retro To Go. So it's no wonder that we really like the new design from Mr PS, the Pick 'n' Mix tea towel. Mr PS often features quite nostalgic food imagery (you may remember the Sweet Sundae design from a while back). Here they've focused on some fine retro sweets - everything from Rhubarb & Custard to flying saucers. Presented in charming typography against a clean white background, it's something of a mouthwatering design. The tea towel costs £9, Buy it from To Dry For |
Ladybird Me Books App for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch Posted: 12 Oct 2011 04:34 AM PDT Fans of Ladybird's classic tales and illustrations now have the opportunity to bring the nostalgia of their own childhoods to a whole new generation with the Me Books App. The app costs 69p and once downloaded gives you access to one title - The Zoo. It's a simple enough idea; tap various spots on the page to hear the text read aloud and the sound effects - in this case the various animals at the zoo. The added twist is that you can also record yourself (or your child) reading the story - and even make your own noises if the fancy takes you. There are a further 10 titles available, costing £1.99 each. Find out more at the App Store. |
Airfix London mugs by Victoria Eggs Posted: 12 Oct 2011 03:36 AM PDT What do you get if you apply the imagery of an airfix kit to something other than warfare? The answer is something like these Airfix London mugs by Victoria Eggs. Here the designer has applied the look of an airfix kits to some of the iconography of London, rather than a ship or an aircraft, with the idea that you could imagine constructing your own model of the city. There's images of some traditional tourist stereotypes, from bowler hats to telephone boxes, umbrellas to the signs for public loos. Not quite true to live then, but charming nonetheless. The mugs are available in a wide range of colours. One mug will cost you £10, while you can buy a set of four for £37. Order them online |
eBay watch: 1970s Ingo Maurer-style bulb desk lamp Posted: 12 Oct 2011 03:33 AM PDT This is interesting. We saw bulb-like desk lamp on eBay a couple of weeks back, but here's another design that mimics the original 1960s Ingo Maurer design, this 1970s bulb desk lamp. Standing around six and a half inches tall (17cm) and said to be dating from the 1970s (no maker attached), it's not quite got the impact of the original, but it's certainly got character. The base is made of chrome-plated plastic, while the shade is made of white opal glass. Most importantly, it's a fully-working model too.The lamp is described as being in 'used but very good condition', with no obvious signs of damage or serious wear and tear. Right now, the bidding is at just £1. If you like the style and don't want vintage, note that John Lewis does a modern-day variant too. Find out more at the eBay website |
Limited Edition 1980s Print at Rose and Grey Posted: 12 Oct 2011 02:34 AM PDT There are band name logos from a cross-section of music from The Smiths to Wham. The film references are dominated by Brat Pack references, although I would argue that Back to the Future is a classic in anyone's book. Mixed in with this, are drawings of gadgets from the period, so that's an early mobile, the Rubik's Cube and Walkman. The print costs £52.50 unframed and is limited to 50 copies. Buy it from Rose and Grey. |
For sale: 1960s Robert Steedman-designed Calderstone House in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire Posted: 12 Oct 2011 02:32 AM PDT Fancy some classic 1960s architecture for less money than you might think? You can get it with this Robert Steedman-designed Calderstone House in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, which is grade B listed and on the market right now. Set in a secluded rural location, Calderstone House, the work of renowned architect Robert Steedman in the 1960s, is constructed from rendered brick under a pitched tiled roof, with its own very distinctive shape. That could make the required renovation a more difficult job, but if you want a house/studio for your life and work, this could be ideal if you fancy the area. It's also packed full of original features too, including those wonderful wooden floors and ceilings. The accommodation is spread over two floors with the living accommodation on the ground floor and a studio on the first floor. The central reception hall gives access to all the rooms with the 'public' accommodation consisting of a sitting room, a dining kitchen and a sun room while the sleeping area is made up of four bedrooms. An external staircase leads to a 'substantial' studio with two elevated gallery levels and an external balcony with views of the countryside around. There is also a large loft area above the bedrooms. If that's not enough, the house is in seven acres of woodland leading to Calder Water, which is also for sale, but separately from the cost of the house. The house only is up for offers over £265,000 if you fancy taking on a project. |
Mini Moderns Fayre’s Fair Wallpaper Posted: 12 Oct 2011 02:08 AM PDT
It features a charming print of old-fashioned carousel horses. If you like the print, you've then got three colours options to choose from. Pictured here is the Lido colour and there is also mustard or the luxurious looking gold and heather combination. Whichever one you pick, they cost £45 per roll from the Mini Moderns website. |
