RETROKIMMER: GREGG ALLMAN LAID BACK

Posted: 03 Oct 2011 07:30 PM PDT

Gregg Allman

As I was digging through aq mountain of cds yesterday to add to my Itunes.... I found this gem and have been playing it over and over all day. Gregg Allman's solo cd Laid Back. This LP was part of the soundtrack of my senior year in high school.

My top 3 favorites songs on this album are "Queen of Hearts". Second is "Multi-Colored Lady" and Third "Please Call Home". The entire album is great actually...

Women are the main focus for Gregg's bluesy lyrics. He writes about women in suchh a vulnerable and honest fashion. No phony pride here. Gregg exposes his pain and heartache like very few other men... That to me is one of thing s that makes this album so compelling.

The Gregg Allman band line up for this record is huge! 26 musicians and vocalists and 6 producers/engineers/managers. Quite an orchestra... Click HERE to take a look at the huge list of players and instruments.

All tracks composed by Gregg Allman; except where indicated below

1."Midnight Rider" (Allman, Robert Kim Payne) – 4:28
2."Queen of Hearts" – 6:17
3."Please Call Home" – 2:48
4."Don't Mess Up a Good Thing" (Oliver Sain) – 4:13
5."These Days" (Jackson Browne) – 3:56
6."Multi-Colored Lady" – 4:55
7."All My Friends" (Scott Boyer) – 4:32
8."Will the Circle Be Unbroken" (arranged by Allman & Johnny Sandlin)– 4:49

Full Gregg Allman Band line up is HERE

Laid Back is a 1973 album by Gregg Allman and was released on the Capricorn Records label. It peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts in 1974 the year I graduated from High School

Allmusic.com stated: "Recorded in the same year as the Brothers and Sisters album, this solo debut release is a beautiful amalgam of R&B, folk, and gospel sounds, with the best singing on any of Gregg Allman's solo releases."

In Rolling Stone, reviewer Tony Glover said "Laid Back isn't quite what you'd expect from Gregg's work with the Brothers Band. Instead, it's a moody LP, often tinged with grandeur, and maybe just a little too rich and one-colored in spots. But on the whole, a moving look at another side of a finely charismatic singer/writer."

Look what I found on YouTube! A two hour audio/video of Gregg Allman performing these songs from 1974.. Get some headphones and rock out! I love this and I am playing it as I put this story together tonight...

The Alley Tour

Poppynoir is pleased to announce that San Francisco author,

Brixton Key will be reading from his novel, Charlie Six,

on Wentworth (at Washington Street, between

Kearny and Grant Streets, San Francisco.)

Tuesday, October 11, at 7:00 PM

Brixton Key's reading will be followed by a party at

The Li Po Cocktail Lounge

916 Grant Street

"Four Chinese men were noisily playing Mahjong in the private room by the kitchen at Wong's when I sat down to supper with Morris. They were all chain-smoking State Express 555's and knocking back Johnny Walker in bucketfuls, with excitement or dread as their winnings went up or down. Morris was as wrapped up in the game as the players themselves. He grimaced, saying "ouch" under his breath when one of them, a waiter with gravy stains on his grubby white nylon shirt, lost twenty quid turning up the wrong tile."

NEW YORK CITY GANGLAND

"New York City Gangland is the eye-catching crown jewel of Mafia history. A superlative record of the mob's luminaries and events, and proof positive that a unique photo is more captivating than thousands of words." -- Selwyn Raab, NY Times columnist & author of 'Five Families'

I received this awesome images book on New York City's Gangland from author Arthur Nash in the mail last week and I just finished it last night. Being a huge follower of gangland activities and personnel from the prohibition era and onward. I found Arthur's book totally thrilling! I knew most of the players but these photos I had never seen before ... Awesome and graphic too.

Arthur sent me a cool post card of Al Capone in Jantzen wear swim trunks! Thank s so much Artie I loved this book! xK

DETROIT'S LEAD GUITARIST: JIMMY MCCARTY

Jim McCarty

Decided this morning to do a fan piece on Jim McCarty my greatest Detroit Guitar Hero. From the very first time I recall jumping around my room and dancing with my sisters... the music was from Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. Here is the very first song I bought with my own money featuring Jim's monster guitar licks and the always pounding Johnny Bee Badanjek...

The Rockets were founded by guitarist Jimmy McCarty and drummer Johnny "Bee" Badanjek, both former members of the group Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels.

The Rockets

Along with slide and rhythm guitarist Dennis Robbins, bassist John Fraga, and lead vocalist David Gilbert, the Rockets reached their pinacle of success in 1979 with a Top 40 hit, a cover of the Fleetwood Mac song "Oh Well", and an appearance on the T.V. series The Midnight Special.

In an August 2006 interview on VH1 Classic, Ted Nugent remarked "I'm the only guy in rock'n'roll that plays that hollow body jazz guitar and it's because in 1960 I saw Jimmy McCarty creating those big fat full chords like I do on "Stranglehold"; I learned that from Jimmy McCarty. Remember the name Jimmy McCarty. He is as important as Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry and Les Paul...a god on guitar." Guitar-maker Paul Reed Smith is among McCarty's admirers.

In 2005, Les Paul recorded Les Paul and Friends: American Made, World Played, with an all-star band. He covered 69 Freedom Special, an instrumental tune co-written by McCarty and recorded while in the Buddy Miles Express. In February 2006, Les Paul won a Grammy for his cover of the song, thus propelling McCarty into another award-winning arena as songwriter.

Jim McCarty Discography

I first met Jim at a Helldrivers gig in Detroit just after Christmas 2009. I stood trying to film him but I was completely mesmerized. Thankfully Dan Boyd was there filming with better cameras! After the set I really wanted to get Jim to sign my cd so I approached him at the bar... He was so nice and dang... so tall!

I had heard a lot about Jim before I met him... Mostly that he does not suffer fools... that I found to be perfectly descriptive. Straight shooter and no hidden agendas or game playing with this man.. at least from my point of view.

Luckily I have gotten to see Jim play quite a few times in the past 2 years. What I really love about watching him is his focus on his guitar and not the audience or cameras. He seems to really be in a zone of his own when he plays...

Walked into one of Jim's Mystery Train gigs awhile back and as I went with my cameras and stuff to take a sit, Jim says on mic from the stage "KIM!" " They are cooking me up here with the spotlight, make them turn it off!" So I scoped out the back of the room for the lighting guy. Found him and walked over to his board.

Asked the man to please kill the spot on Jimmy. They guy said, "But he'll be in the dark while the rest of his band will be lit." I replied to the clueless young guy, "He doesn't care." And he doesn't care about such things. Jimmy comes to play and he is still bringing it to the thrill of his legions of fans and one girl blogger fan from Ypsilanti.

I shot this little video of Jimmy having a little fun with Muruga the famed drummer from Detroit.

THANK YOU JIM!
