eBay watch: Original 1960s Serpente space age table lamp by Elio Martinelli Posted: 14 Nov 2011 06:42 AM PST If you want a reissued one of these new, you'll be paying £606 for it. But this original 1960s Serpente table lamp by Elio Martinelli is on eBay for much, much less - and so far, with no bids. The lamp was designed in 1965 for Martinelli Luce and is a bona fide space age classic, hence why this snake-light is still available in reissued form over 40 years on (and why we featured it back in 2007). The seller claims this is an original, with official branding on thew rear and in working condition, complete with its original bakelite on/off switch. Just screw in a 60w bulb and you're away.As for condition, the seller says there are 'a few marks to white paint through use' and the 'odd scratch', but 'nothing to spoil its appearance'. So on the face of it, not a bad example. It's also up for £19.99 and yet to pick up a bid. Find out more at the eBay website |
Maria Dahlgren homewares for Tate Posted: 14 Nov 2011 04:25 AM PST Tate have teamed up with one of Retro To Go's favourite illustrators, Maria Dahlgren, to produce a great new range of retro homewares. The range includes aprons, tea towels, trays, all with various visual links back to the museum, and this bold, graphic mug design - presumably inspired by the position of Tate Modern and Britain by the river. Prices for the range start at £12 for the tea towels, while this mug costs £12.95. Buy it online |
Solitaire wallpaper from Villa Nova Posted: 14 Nov 2011 04:24 AM PST We've featured Villa Nova's fabric range on here recently but did you know that the company also produce a range of wallpapers, including this Solitaire wallpaper design? Taken from their High Society range, the papers are very much in a 1950s style, with abstracted images of flowers and patterns in a muted colour scheme. Solitaire, for example, is avaliable in the duck egg blue pictured or a subtly silver alternative. The paper costs £41 a roll. Buy it online |

Taken by Mike Stimpson, the images are recreations of iconic photographs and works of art, but made from Lego. Pictured above is the classic John and Yoko Amsterdam Bed-In. Other recreations include classic pieces of photography such as Charles Ebbets 1932 "Lunch Atop a Skyscraper", Alfred Eisenstaedt's 1945 photograph "V.J. Day Times Square" and Albert Korda's photograph of Che Guevara. The images are amusing (so much so I spent a whole morning looking at them), but also show a definite respect for the originals in how carefully they have been constructed and shot to match the originals. Once you've found your favourites you can have them printed as cards, posters or canvas or framed prints. Visit Red Bubble for full details. |
We Belong Strong Limited Edition Print Posted: 14 Nov 2011 04:24 AM PST
It is a reproduction of an original design dating back to 1920 and seems like a brash American version of the ever-so British Keep Calm slogan. It has been reproduced by an art-print specialist on heavy paper and is sold framed. It is limited to twenty stamped and numbered editions. The other design given a similar treatment features an anchor design from the 1950s. Buy the print for £245 from Pedlars. |
