Dylan Dog |
Based on the popular Italian fumetti comic book series, Dylan Dog is something of an oddity. Like Hellboy, Constantine and Shaun of the Dead mixed together, the film is a horror/action/comedy starring Superman Returns star Brandon Routh.
During a brief trip to Italy I devoured numerous Fumetti collections and was astounded at the rich variety of material. Translations are rare and my Italian is less than rusty, but even so I could sense the high quality. Equal parts bawdy humor and action, the Italian comic book scene is surely one that needs more representation in the US.
Dylan Dog has been a major hit in Italy since its creation back in '86, but was only introduced in America when it was reprinted by Dark Horse in 1999 (with new covers by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola). Interestingly enough, the creator of Dylan Dog also wrote the novel Dellamorte Dellamore which served as the basis of the cult film Cemetery Man. A strange and charismatic series, the movie takes a number of liberties but appears to have somewhat retained the comic book's sense of humor and bizarre appeal.
DYLAN DOG: DEAD OF NIGHT is a new horror/comedy film based on one of the world's most popular comics (60 million copies worldwide). Brandon Routh stars as Dylan Dog, world famous private investigator specializing in affairs of the undead. His PI business card reads "No Pulse? No Problem." Armed with an edgy wit and carrying an arsenal of silver and wood-tipped bullets, Dylan must track down a dangerous artifact before a war ensues between his werewolf, vampire and zombie clients living undercover in the monster-infested backstreets of New Orleans.
The movie premieres April 29, 2011.
