Saul Bass-style retro X-Men First Class trailer |
This Summer, an unprecedented number of comic-book themed movies will premiere. One that has until recently fallen off the radar is Matthew Vaugh's X-Men prequel. Set in 1960's during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the movie will focus on the initial meeting of Professor Charles Xavier and Eric Lensherr (later leading a militant group of mutant terrorists and taking up the name Magneto). The first X-Men movie set the world ablaze with excitement as one of the most popular comic book franchises became a blockbuster movie. The excitement died slowly after the third film failed to capture the same creative drive and audiences moved on to Spider-Man, Batman and Iron Man.
In just two months. the X-Men will be making a movie comeback. Coverage of X-Men: First Class has been slim as the news channels focus on Thor, Captain America and Green Lantern which all look like like major money makers, dwarfing the more humble more ensemble-based offering from 20th Century Fox.
Given that the film is a period piece, the retro-style trailer (all the rage these days) is appropriate. Based on designer Saul Bass' distinctive style and using a digitally aged version of the 1990's cartoon, this should get you in the mood for First Class.

The thing that intrigues me most about X-Men: First Class and Captain America: The First Avenger are the eras when they are set. While hero Captain America looks like he's cut from the same Saturday morning movie serials that inspired Indiana Jones, Matthew Vaughn's X-Men adventure is a reminder of the Cold War and the double-dealing that went on between countries, spies. The Cold War feeling makes this '60s-style title sequence even more impressive. An editor known by the handle "Joe D" posted on Vimeo a two-minute sequence that oozes James Bond cool with Saul Bass inspired animation set to a scary-good rendition of the X-Men: The Animated Series theme.
X-Men: First Class hits theaters on June 3rd, 2011.
