For sale: New apartments in the 1930s art deco Manor Road Garage, East Preston, West Sussex Posted: 07 Sep 2011 12:00 PM PDT It might not look much now, but the 1930s art deco Manor Road Garage, East Preston, West Sussex will soon be apartments, with reservations now being taken. An icon of a bygone age, the Manor Road Garage and its four petrol pumps picked up grade II listing status back in 2007, but was actually given the art deco look around 1934 and continued as a working garage until 1973, before being left to die. Until the developers moved in.The agents are offering the building as apartments, with an artist's impression now being shown off. The building will retain the Grade II listed facade, refurbished the pumps with their glass domes and many other period features. But beyond that, you'll find both the single and two storey 'luxury' properties with two bedrooms, private terraces, landscaped communal gardens and private parking. The finished apartments are said to be ready in July, with reservations being taken now. You can contact the agent for a brochure, with the ones online at present starting at £225,000, moving up to £310,000. Ideal if you fancy a mix of old and new, not to mention some quiet seaside living. |
Velvet Trim Jacket from Topshop Posted: 07 Sep 2011 10:15 AM PDT Though the 1960s may be fondly remember as a decade that made waves in fashion, it wasn't just the youth market offering up iconic pieces. Thanks to the big name brands like Chanel, a decidedly more prim and chic style pervaded too, making this Velvet Trim Jacket from Topshop a nice take on a more grown up 60s look. The jacket's cut may not be quite a refined as the inspiration, but with the combination of cobalt blue and rich velt trim throughout there's an undeniable hint of the style. The peter pan collar is the ideal finish to create a piece with a timeless quality. It's available now from Topshop for £65. |
Printed Crepe Jumpsuit from Oasis Posted: 07 Sep 2011 10:00 AM PDT This year's seventies trend in mainstream fashion has given the jumpsuit a definite rebirth. While many have missed the mark for retro lovers, there's still plenty of pieces that channel vintage inspiration with great style. This Printed Crepe Jumpsuit from Oasis is one such piece, with an instant, easy retro feel. The cut of this jumpsuit creates a chic silhouette, lengthening the body with long wide-legged trousers and a high neckline. The use of ruffled sleeves and a belted waist ensure there's no loss of femininity, while the all over print manages to be charming without going over the top. It's now available from Oasis for £75. |
Handmade Black Floral Leather Satchel Posted: 07 Sep 2011 09:23 AM PDT Satchels have been the bag du jour for a while now, but Zatchels produce the real deal, drawing on their many years experience in making shoes and bags from leather. You can select your satchel from a huge choice of designs and then pick the exact size you'd like with the option to add a handle. Prices range from £104-£120. Check them out here. |
Posted: 07 Sep 2011 04:42 AM PDT If you hanker after a retro styled kitchen you could do a lot worse that start off with this Typhoon Novo Bread Bin from John Lewis. It's glossy enamel finish and chrome legs and handle give it a definite mid-century flavour. Not only does it look the part but it's capacious interior will easily accomodate your loaf, with space left over for any other baked goods you need to store - crumpet anyone? The door has a magnetic catch too, so no risk of leaving it ajar. The breadbin comes in either red or cream and costs £60 from John Lewis here. |
eBay watch: 1960s Metamec Sunray wall clock Posted: 07 Sep 2011 01:38 AM PDT Big thanks to Andrew Graham once more for spotting this very distinctive 1960s Metamec Sunray wall clock, with a very low price only adding to the appeal. Made in England and from 1967, it actually looks older - there's a touch of the art nouveau about those 'rays' for sure. Either way, it's a great focal point in a room. According to the seller, the this has been 'thoroughly cleaned and restored' to its former glory, with the original convex glass unmarked and the sunray segments outside undamaged. The mechanism works fine too, you'll just need a single battery to keep it going. The only flaw is some of the gold 'gold' on those sunrays (only in small areas) has worn, but you can see from the photos that it doesn't have much of an impact. Anyway, with a current price of just 99 pence, it's hardly something to worry about. Find out more at the eBay website |
Hector Bibendum table lamp designed by Terence Conran Posted: 07 Sep 2011 01:20 AM PDT The Terence Conran-designed Hector Bibendum table lamp offers an update on a familar shape. This object celebrates not one, but two separate anniversaries. There's 21 years of the Original BTC Hector lamp, as well as the centenary of Michelin House which we mentioned earlier in the year. The Conran Shop was one of the first companies to stock Original BTC lighting and, to tie the two together, the bone china shade of the classic Hector lamp has been modified to reflect the well-known curves of the Michelin Man. The lamp is finished off with a contrasting coloured cable: pick from red or blue. The lamp costs £149. Buy it from The Conran Shop |
Float sofa by Parlour Furniture Posted: 07 Sep 2011 01:20 AM PDT Parlour Furniture is the company of British maker Garry Smith. He specialises in working with wood, and this sofa is made from walnut. Combine that with the grey wool fabric and you've got a design that echoes the mid-century Scandinavian styles that are so popular at the moment. There's a nice unique twist to the look though: it's got clear acrylic feet that help create the floating appearance that inspired its name. How much? Well, you'll have worked out that it's not an off-the-peg design and the price reflects that. It costs £1600. Buy it from Rockett St George |
Posted: 07 Sep 2011 01:19 AM PDT Its high backed 'fan' is created using spindles of wood that have been bent to form the distinctive slatted silhouette. Pictured here is the chair with in a lacquered ash finish, but if you want something that moves a little further away from the classic look, then the indigo stained ash option might be of interest instead. The chair costs £1,200 from Heal's, although it is a special order item with a 3 to 5 week lead time. |
Posted: 07 Sep 2011 01:19 AM PDT Rather than the usual cheese or chocolate options, this is a bourguignonne fongue set, which means it is designed for serving little pieces of meat. It consists of six cups and six forks, presented on a bamboo base, which adds to its retro look. One for the real fondue fanatic, it costs £175 from Ecklee. |
