| JOHNNY MORGAN AND JOHNNY THUNDERS! Posted: 08 Sep 2011 05:44 PM PDT   Scott (Morgan) and I went out to Gary Burmele's house on Dexter Rd. one night where Johnny and his family were staying. It was just Scott, Johnny, and I and we were sitting around just hanging out shooting the shit. Johnny had on a pink velour shirt. The kind with the zipper turtle neck that were popular in the 60's and black pants.  Johnny loved pink and black together. I had my drum riser done up with pink carpet and black trim for him for our second chance show. Any way, Scott and I are talking to him in the living room and the lights are real low almost non existent, it was winter. Johnny says to me "Why don't you have Scott join our band?" I said " He's got a band, he's in Sonic's Rendezvous Band" Scott said "yeah I'm already in a band, I'm in Sonic's" This was shortly after Johnny and Julie Jordan, his wife, had heard "I Need You" on HONEY radio, an oldies station on am radio out of Detroit. They were blown away by Scott's voice and the song. Julie said she wanted to cry after hearing it because it had moved her so much.  So after Johnny asked Scott to join Gang War, he went over to play some songs on his entertainment center and played his Les Paul Jr. along with it on his amplifier which is how he learned to play songs. The song he played along with was "Suspicion" by Elvis. Not the Terry Stafford one you always hear but Elvis' version which we had never heard before. After that Scott said "Well lets get going". On the way home he said to me "I wonder where he got that version of Suspicion?" JOHN MORGAN....  |

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 04:34 PM PDT  Master 6 degree black belt Charles Rice Jr I had a great time tonight chatting on the phone with Karate Master student teacher/6th degree black belt Charles Rice Jr from Detroit, Michigan. Charles has been involved in karate since he was 9 years old. What a guy!! Loved him.... Charles is a 6th degree black belt and he used to be a safety patrol on Detroit's north end near John R. Charles used to get chased home every day from school. Once he began obtaining belts in karate Charles never ran from anyone again....  Charles is raising funds by selling peach cobbler and taking donations to get the team to Spain for the WKC World Championships. I will have info soon on where you can donate money to help Charles and his karate kids and get fabulous peach cobbler too....  The Southfield Martial Arts Institute is the ultimate contemporary training complex. It's over 15,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility makes it one of the largest and finest martial art schools in the country. | DENIZ TEK AND THE CONTINENTAL CLUB 2010 Posted: 08 Sep 2011 02:25 PM PDT  The Continental Club started up in 1957 in Austin and featured swing jazz like Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. In the 60's it became a burlesque club and was home to exotic dancers Candy Barr, "Bubbles" Cash, and more. History of the Continental Club By the 70's the Continental Club began to host rock music. When the Satellite Lounge in Houston closed down they moved the operation to the current midtown location and started it up as a second Continental Club. Across the street is Sig's Lagoon, a record store featuring the explosion of new vinyl records coming out these days, rare used vinyl, as well as retro and pop cultural artifacts and all kinds of cool stuff. The band that backed me up was Love Street, who are master players and session cats at Sugar Hill. I've recorded with them before, including a wild version of You're Gonna Miss Me. Here was the line-up.  Guitar: Deniz Tek Guitar: Kenny Cordray Bass: Mark Andes Keyboards: Paul English Drums: Tyson Sheff  The Beetles, a Beatles tribute band, played first to a packed cheering house, most of whom departed the club when they finished their set around ten o'clock. They had their vocal parts down and from the back room actually did sound like the Beatles. We went on I think around 11. First up Love Street did an original tune Under the Rainbow and the Peter Green classic Green Manalishi. Next up, I joined the band on stage and plugged in to the Mark3 Mesa Boogie combo amp, which I'd borrowed from Dan Workman at the studio. First two numbers were Tomas Escalante singing the Spirit tune "Got A Line On You". I've always loved that song and it was a kick toplay it hard with the original Spirit bass player Mark Andes. Deniz Tek starts at 33:52 We picked up an instant connection and the song fired. It set the tone for a great set to follow. Tomas then sang the 1968 Fever Tree classic "San Francisco Girls"before leaving the stage to wild applause. Then we played my set, which was a mix of solo stuff and a couple of Radio Birdman tunes. After the set, we hung out for a while. I had a few $4.50 G and T's from the bar, talked to some really nice people, and generally enjoyed a great evening of music. There are not many cool places like the Continental Club and Sid's Lagoon left. We need to support 'em. Staying home and watching movies is not an excuse!  |

Handling lead vocals for the MC5 on this night was William Duvall ( Alice in Chains) • The cover artwork is a painting by MC5 bassist Mike Davis based on a sketch that was done whilst on the road in the sixties then redone exclusively for this release. • Advertising will be taken out in all major rock magazines Mojo, Uncut, Vive Le Rock, Record Collector, where reviews are also expected.  |
