While at the NC Comicon this past weekend I decided to try something new and interviewed a few choice creators and guests. I had talked to Nathan Edmondson last year, but was still ignorant of his success with Olympus and The Light for Image Comics. At the time he was gearing up for Who is Jake Ellis?, a series that has since gone on to become the talk of the comic world. An intelligent and sharp writer, his comics have gained strong support inside the comics world and in mainstream media.
An up and coming writer in the indie scene, Edomondson crossed over into the world of superheroics, in his own way. As part of the new 52 line at DC, Edmondson revised Grifter, the gun-toting adventurer from Wildstorm before it became folded into the DCU. An ex-black ops soldier, Cash Cole is a con many playing with very high stakes, a practice that lands him in the unlikely situation of abduction by Daemonites, forever changing his life. On the run from his tormentors, Cole finds that he can sense the thoughts of these creatures who appear human to everyone else. His black ops training kicking in almost on instinct, he begins killing each Daemonite he encounters. As no one else can see these creatures for what they are, Cole is dubbed a madman and soon finds himself on his own.
In the new series, Grifter's character is unfolding slowly through conflicts with aliens that he shares a psychic bond with and his own brother, charged by the US military to silence what appears to be a rogue agent on a killing spree. The action is intense, the artwork by Cafu (Thunder Agents) superb and the potential is there for this series to really take off, appealing to readers looking for an exciting new series with plenty of cinematic gunplay and intrigue.
Edmondson took a few minutes to give some hints about what's to come and some sweet teasers for The Activity. I glimpsed a page from the forthcoming series and it looks amazing.
