Happy Town Trailer Video | New ABC Series Combines Twin Peaks With Eerie, Indiana

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 08:10 AM PDT

Happy Town has had its premiere on ABC with the pilot episode In This Home On Ice.

The show is something of a cross between the classic and never-to-be-forgotten Twin Peaks and the less-memorable but no less intriguing Eerie, Indiana.

Happy Town is a drama series set in the Minnesota town of Haplin, which is all sweetness and light on the surface. So much so that the residents have labeled it Happy Town.

However, beneath the thin veneer of perfectness is a multitude of secrets and sins, with almost every resident of the town having some sort of hidden intrigue.

As well as the other two shows, this trailer reminds me of The X-Files. Let’s hope this series is given a longer run than previous dramas which these days seem to be canceled before being given a chance to shine.

Lucky Gynecologist On The Price Is Right (Video) | Drew Carey Can’t Stop Laughing

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 07:43 PM PDT

The word ‘coincidence’ comes to mind when watching this extremely rare moment from ‘The Price Is Right.’ I’m not going to spoil it, but let’s just say Drew Carey couldn’t be more right when he says, “If you’re not laughing now, something is wrong with you!”

I’m pretty sure Bob Barker would have died laughing had he still been hosting this show.

I don’t usually watch game shows because I usually find them depressing and boring (I’d rather be a contestant), but every once in a while some funny moment happens that makes it interesting. Contestants that make embarrassing remarks are always entertaining in my book.

This time, however, the contestant doesn’t need to do anything but be himself to get the audience cracking up. Seriously, what are the odds of a gynecologist called Bummer winning a car with a bid of $69?!

Watch Funny 200,000 Women Join in Boobquake 2010 (News Video) | Boobs Cause Earthquakes?

A Muslim cleric, Kazem Sedighi, was quoted in the Chicago Tribune as saying: “Many women who do not dress modestly… which (consequently) increases earthquakes.”

Purdue student, Jen McCreight, decided to challenge the cleric on her blog and Facebook page, encouraging women to show some cleavage and leg!

See, if you’re going to go making statements like that, you have to know that someone is going to call you on it.

Immodesty causes earthquakes. What rubbish. We have things like cancer and AIDS happening in the world, and people are trying to argue about a little cleavage.

Sheesh.

Watch Arizona Immigration Law SB1070 Sparks Controversy (News Video)

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 06:34 PM PDT

Despite the fact that even President Obama has called the law misguided, Arizona legislation has gone ahead with the toughest law on immigration in the United States.

Even the news ‘gist’ of this law is scary, with police being granted immigration authorities. They have the ability to detain anyone they think might be an illegal alien.

While I certainly understand the US trying to crack down on illegal immigration – Australia is having a heck of a time with it as well – this law scares me.

When you start putting things into law that involve acting on personal suspicion alone, then you start opening a nasty can of worms.

Premature Basketball Celebration Video | It Ain’t Over Til It’s Over

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 03:11 PM PDT

In life we learn that it ain’t over ’til the fat lady sings. And in a basketball game, it’s not over until the time runs out.

The Croatian team in this video learns it the hard way when they celebrate a tad too early. They believe a basket 0.6 seconds from the end of the game should clinch the victory, and they’re not afraid to show it.

But alas, it’s not to be. The remaining 0.4 seconds gives their European opponents enough time to snatch the win, and break their Croat hearts in the process.

I’ll bet some heads rolled in the locker room after this game!

Chatroulette Speed Painting Video | Forget Making Music, Let’s Make Art on The Fly!

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 02:02 PM PDT

This video is a perfect example of how to manipulate a meme so that is evolves.

Chatroulette, which offers video chat with strangers, has already been used for improvised music performances, including one by Ben Folds. But this talented individual removes the music aspect and sets about creating instant artwork instead.

Speed painting isn’t a new phenomenon, with artists having used both real paint and canvas and computer software such as Photoshop to create wonderful portraits in minutes.

But using Chatroulette to find subjects is a new idea, and a brilliant one at that.

What I love the most is that the paintings all have a certain something. They’re not perfect by any means but they capture the essence of that person in that moment. Which is surely what art is all about.

Gordon Brown Calls Voter A Bigoted Woman Video | British Prime Minister Caught On Mic

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 09:43 AM PDT

If you’re the Prime Minister of Great Britain, a day before the final leaders’ debate, and a week before the election itself, it’s probably best to remove the microphone from your lapel before laying into the voter you’ve just been talking to. Are you listening, Gordon Brown?

Gordon Brown, current leader of the Labour Party, spoke to a voter in Rochdale this morning. Which is standard practice during an election.

However, after getting in his car, he called the encounter “a disaster” and labeled the 66-year-old woman “a bigoted woman” after she questioned him on immigration from Eastern Europe. All of which was caught on mic by Sky News.

Brown made a mistake, a big one. But far too much is being made of it. And actually, he answered the immigration question anyway, stating that just as many Brits emigrate within Europe as the other way around. Stop the traffic one way and we’ll have to stop it the other way as well.

I find it strange that this incident occurred the day after I posted a video mocking David Cameron. It’s as though I’m going to have to stick to impartiality whether I want to or not. With that in mind, I wonder what Nick Clegg will get up to tomorrow?

Watch KR Jamison on Link Between Mental Illness & Creativity (Video) | Myths & Facts

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 07:34 PM PDT

Kay Redfield Jamison, professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, talks about the link between creativity, creative people and mood disorders.

While I have long pushed away the ‘need to be depressed to be creative’ statement as a myth, I too have wondered how much my depression plays a role in my creative writing.

It may seem silly to someone who hasn’t experienced it, but there is a real fear there that treatment could somehow take away whatever it is helping the creativity flow.

The muse, if you will.

This video, however, just goes to show that even the famous creators wanted some easing of their suffering.

Watch Jason Alexander on Thank God You’re Here (Video)

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 07:17 PM PDT

Jason Alexander steps through the door and answers the important questions like: “Captain, what were those blue flashing balls?”

To be completely honest, I thought Jason Alexander would suck at doing this kind of comedy, but he’s actually pretty good!

I think I, like many people out there, got too used to him as being such a whiny man on Seinfeld, so we forget what kind of acting he can actually do.

In this case, on the spot acting.

Now if only he could direct me to that planet where the atmosphere gets normal humans high as a kite…

Good vacation spot.

“Hungry Beast” Animated Short Shows History of Paedophilia in the Catholic Church Video

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 05:21 PM PDT

The Catholic Church might like us to believe that paedophilia is a modern-day problem. But as this animated video from topical Australian program Hungry Beast shows, the problem has existed for thousands of years.

The first documented reference to paedophilia in Catholic doctrine actually dates back to around 60AD. This video then takes us through other dark moments in the history of Catholicism.

Watching this video play out, you don’t wonder why the Catholic Church has such a problem with paedophilia today. You wonder why it wouldn’t? Secrecy and cover-ups have been par for the course over centuries, so change is clearly going to take some time. But one wonders how many small children will suffer in the process.

David Cameron Election Video | Conservative Leader Presents His Party’s Vision For Britain

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 12:28 PM PDT

OK, I’ll admit that while this is indeed David Cameron spelling out his vision for a future Britain as led by the Conservatives, it may have been edited a little. Or a lot, in fact.

But it made me laugh, as I, like many other people, get the feeling this is what Cameron is actually thinking as he stands and parrots the speeches his spin doctors think will get him and his party elected.

If this were TV or radio, I’d have to follow this video up with one taking the piss out of Gordon Brown and Nick Clegg as well, just to ensure political impartiality. But I don’t think those rules apply to the Web.

Anyway, this video is hardly going to stop anyone from voting Tory on May 6, is it? Instead, it’s merely designed to give those people who don’t trust Cameron a chance to laugh at him. Where’s the harm in that?
