THIS IS A LETTER OF APPRECIATION TO ALL THE DETROIT JAZZ AND BLUES MUSICIANS AND DRUMMERS IN PARTICULAR. WE WERE BLESSED WITH A HERITAGE THAT INCLUDED BENNY BENJAMIN, PISTOL ALLEN, URIEL JONES, AND ELVIN JONES.

Benny Benjamin on drums......

WE BOILED THAT DOWN AND GOT JOHNNY BEE BADANJEK, DENNIS MACHINEGUN THOMPSON, SCOTT ASHETON, BILL FIGG, AND MARTIN (TINO) GROSS. THAT'S JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG.

Dennis Thompson MC5 "Skunk"

YOU COULD ADD JIM OSTERBERG (IGGY) BUT IN THE END HIS TALENT WENT BEYOND SAM LAY TO SOMETHING ELSE. EVERY ROCK DRUMMER WAS DIFFERENT.

Tino Gross and Johnny Bee Badanjek (Howling Diablos)

DENNIS THOMPSON WAS JAZZ, SCOTT ASHETON WAS MAKING IT UP AS HE WENT ALONG, BILL FIGG WAS MARCHING BAND, MARTIN WAS OLD SCHOOL AND NEW. I WOULD BE AMISS IF I LEFT OUT MY BROTHERS DAVID AND JOHNNY. WE ALWAYS HAD DRUMS KITS IN OUR BASEMENT SO I OPTED FOR CONGA DRUMS.

Uncle Frank Potenza and Nephew Jimmy Kimmel

Sad news from Hollywood is the passing of Jimmy Kimmel's Uncle Frank. Jimmy K is my favorite late night show. Letterman and Leno just don't make me laugh but Uncle Frank and Guillermo has me in hysterics! Here is a a video of Uncle Frank and Guillermo...

Jimmy Kimmel's late Uncle Frank Potenza may be gone, but he's certainly not forgotten. Last night on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live,' Kimmel gave an emotional, tearful tribute to his uncle, who passed away August 23 at the age of 77.

Potenza, known on the show simply as Uncle Frank, was a constant presence on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live,' where he worked as a security guard, commentator and occasional red carpet interviewer. He was a willing, good-natured participant in the show's comedy bits and was always smiling, even when he was the butt of a joke.

Kimmel fought through tears -- and cracked a few jokes -- during a monologue that eulogized his beloved uncle. He remembered his Uncle Frank as a New York City cop of 20 years who only made six arrests, a man who would always show up 12 hours early for anything, had been a personal bodyguard for Frank Sinatra and moved their family to Las Vegas when Kimmel was a kid.

Miniature Carlton Sottsass shelves available from the V&A

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 05:34 AM PDT

Carlton

The exhibition doesn't open until 24 September but the V&A's product to accompany their Postmodernism show is already beginning to creep into their shop. Definitely worth a look are these miniature Carlton shelves, based on the design by Ettore Sottsass

Designed in 1981 by Sottsass for Memphis, the riot of colour, shapes and material have become forever associated with the period, and the movement. Hard to imagine in many places other than a gallery, they are bound to form a focal point in any room. Though they are described as miniature, it's hard to tell from the V&A's website just how big they are. Judging by the price, and the fact they are only deliverable in the UK, hopefully they're not too mini.

Available to pre-order now, the shelves cost £750.

eBay watch: 1960s Jaguar Mk II 240 car

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 04:23 AM PDT

Jag1

The car of choice for TV villains in the '60s and '70s, this Jaguar Mk II 240 is both a stylish and a speedy number, as well as being up for sale on eBay right now.

This particular example dates back to 1968, with 42,000 miles showing on the clock from the two previous owners. The seller can't confirm if that's genuine, but judging by the low number of owners and the condition, it might well be.

Jag2

It packs a 2,400cc engine, said to be capable of over 100mph and is in a 'Cotswold Beige' colour, matched up with the original black vinyl interior and original dash and dials. As for driving, according to the seller, the car 'starts and drives exactly as it should and is a pleasure to drive'. Ready to go in short. Although there might be some work to be done on the paint in time.

Want it? Not the cheapest car at around £8,995, but a head-turner, that's for sure. Lots more detail and images on the listing.

Big Eyed 60s Mod Style Paper Dolls

Il_570xN_199921002
I remember having some paper dolls when I was a child, but they weren't as coolly attired as these Big Eyed 60s Mod Style Paper Dolls.

There are four dolls available, each with different hair and eye colouring, but all with that wide-eyed Blythe doll look. Once you've chosen the doll, there is then a choice of four outfits, one for each season. Spring and Winter are wearing floral tent dresses (Winter's inspired by a Marimekko design) whilst Summer and Autumn wear shift dresses. Each season's outfit also has appropriate accessories. You can buy the dolls individually (£5 each) or a set with all four dolls and outfits (just over £15).

Buy them from Finch and Willow on Etsy.
