THE BEATLES: YOU CAN'T DO THAT AND MY OTHER FAVORITES

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 11:49 AM PST

The Beatles

The Beatles were an English rock band, active throughout the 1960s and one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts in the history of popular music. Formed in Liverpool, by 1962 the group consisted of John Lennon (rhythm guitar, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals) and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals).

You Can't Do That..

Rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll, the group later worked in many genres ranging from pop ballads to psychedelic rock, often incorporating classical and other elements in innovative ways. The nature of their enormous popularity, which first emerged as "Beatlemania", transformed as their songwriting grew in sophistication. They came to be perceived as the embodiment of ideals of the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s.

I'll Cry Instead

Initially a five-piece line-up of Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe (bass) and Pete Best (drums), they built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over a three-year period from 1960. Sutcliffe left the group in 1961, and Best was replaced by Starr the following year.

Run for Your Life

Molded into a professional outfit by their manager, Brian Epstein, their musical potential was enhanced by the creativity of producer George Martin. They achieved mainstream success in the United Kingdom in late 1962, with their first single, "Love Me Do". Gaining international popularity and acquiring the nickname "Fab Four" the following year, they toured extensively until 1966. During their subsequent "studio years", they produced what critics consider some of their finest material including the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), widely regarded as a masterpiece.

Ask Me Why...

After their break-up in 1970, the band members all found success in independent musical careers. Lennon was murdered outside his home in New York City in 1980, and Harrison died of cancer in 2001. McCartney and Starr remain active.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PATSY CLINE TUNE?

Travis Small on Deviant Art

This morning I popped up a Patsy Cline song on my I tunes that I love... "Leavin on Your Mind"

I posted this video on Facebook and a lot of people wrote in their Patsy favorites... So I thought I would share a couple of their choices too.

Phyllis S. I love her . . . my favorite song of her's is "She's
Got You".

Lelia R. I could never single out just one because I kind of worship her, but there is something about "Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray" that really gets me, so poignant.

Games From My Childhood Print by Ministry of Words

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 12:28 PM PST

Child

I think the image and the title pretty much sums this up, but if you want more, read on about the Games From My Childhood Print by Ministry of Words.

Over the artist: 'This print and in particular the choice of fonts were inspired by the childhood games I enjoyed playing with in the 70's. Just looking at the names now conjures up so many happy memories. I hope they do for you too.'

So that's the imagery taken care of. As for the print, that's been hand screenprinted in London onto 200gsm Fedrigoni Sirio recycled paper in a limited edition of 50l sized to fit into a standard 'off the shelf' frame. £37.70 is the price.

eBay watch: 1970s Guzzini-style table lamp

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 05:06 AM PST

Guz

Keeping that 1970s / space age theme going, this 1970s Guzzini-style table lamp is good value if you are after the look.

For good reason too, as this certainly wasn't a Guzzini original. It was actually made by BHS back in the day. Yes, even back then, the high street copied the designers for more affordable ranges.

But let's focus on the positives. This has the look of the era with that chrome-plated steel stem and base, plus an acrylic shade in a bold shade of yellow.

It stands at 55cm tall and takes a normal bayonet bulb, with condition described as 'pretty much immaculate'. £4.99 is the current price.

Interiors '70: The Photography of Carla De Benedetti by Giovanni Odoni

Interiors

This is a 'coming soon' I'm afraid, but fans of space age design will certainly want to check out Interiors '70: The Photography of Carla De Benedetti by Giovanni Odoni, which is republished in December by Verba Volant.

This is the 1960s and 1970s, seen through interior design magazines of the time. Specifically, images taken by Carla De Benedetti between 1965 and 1975. From that, you can assume we're talking design excess and space age marvels, with designers such as Franco Albini, Gae Aulenti, Cini Boeri, Joe Colombo, Italo Lupi, Carla Venosta, and Nanda Vigo particularly prominent amongst its pages.

Interiors2

All the photos are lifestyle shots, so think your current favourite interiors magazines transported back 40 years (and to Italy), with selling a lifestyle just as important as the designs on show. In addition, there's an introduction by veteran design journalist Giovanni Odoni that sheds light on this important phase of Carla De Benedetti's career and on this 'undervalued period' (their words) in the history of interior design.

Amazon is doing pre-orders, £23.75 is the price for this 304-page book.

Fans of the original Graham Greene novel (and perhaps fans of either film version too) should love this Brighton Rock Print by With Relish.

The design consists of a two-colour silk screen print of circles based on the centre of traditional sticks of rock (which play their part in the classic novel). These have then been laid over a background of pages from old editions of the novel. The print measures 594 x 420mm.

It costs £45 from Unlimited Editions.
