Ochre

As the high streets moves into designs for the colder months, the heavier fabric choices allow for a different take on popular retro influences. This Flannel A Line Skirt from Oasis uses the more heavy duty materials to great effect, with an instantly sixties look.

The warm ochre shade of yellow has an instant vintage appeal, with the choice of flannel fabric adding both texture and strong structure to the skirt. The high waist, mini hemline and A-line cut are unmistakeably mid-sixties, while the addition of hip pockets adds an extra piece of mod appeal.

Lilly Faux Fur Cape from Boohoo

Lillycape

The welcome return of the cape to mainstream outerwear ranges has mainly focused on a mid-sixties interpretation. Channeling a later style, this Lilly Faux Fur Cape from Boohoo brings a cool crossover from sixties to seventies inspiration.

The longer cape style is reminiscent of the hippy influence of ponchos as outerwear. Still keeping the classic cape style with a single breasted fastening and coat collar, the addition of faux fur trim complements the tan wool shade well.

It's available from Boohoo online now for £30.

Scandinavian Advent Candle from John Lewis

Adventcandle

At this time of year you can't enter a supermarket without tripping over piles of chocolate advent calendars. For a more traditional way of marking of the days until Christmas, invest in a Scandinavian Advent Candle from John Lewis.

Rather than eating your way to the 25th of December you light the candle and burn down a section for each day of advent. The candle has a nice retro folk-style tree design in red and white complete with star and reindeer for that festive flavour - an altogether more stylish way to countdown to Christmas.

The candle costs £8 from John Lewis - you can buy it online here.

Lampe Gras 201 lamp

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 05:29 AM PST

Lampe gras

We've covered the covetable modernist style of the Lampe Gras 205 lamp before: The Lampe Gras 201 has that same sense of utilitarian style.

Designed by Bernard Albin-Gras back in 1921, this model clamps onto a desk or a shelf to provide maximum light where needed. Indeed, you can imagine Le Corbusier using it as he poured over his plans and drawings. It comes in a variety of finishes: take your pick from black and chrome, black satin or satin red and black.

The lamp costs £328.

Hockney: The Biography by Christopher Simon Sykes

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 04:23 AM PST

Hockney

David Hockney is one of the most interesting characters in modern-day art. So if you have an interest art, the art scene or just the swinging sixties, Hockney: The Biography by Christopher Simon Sykes, which is published in hardback on November 24th by Century, should be for you.

It's actually part one, but to be honest, almost certainly the most interesting part. We're talking 1937 - 1975, taking in Hockney's start at Bradford Art College, his rise to fame in the swinging sixties, along with the friendships and relationships from that era, as well as his relocation to California and the cool of the swimming pool series of paintings, not to mention his set designs and major retrospective exhibitions.

It shouldn't pull any punches either, with writer Sykes being given 'exclusive and unprecedented access 'to Hockney's extensive archives, notebooks and paintings. He's also got interviews with family, friends and Hockney himself, should you be worried that this is some kind of unofficial profile.

Coming in at 368 pages, the book is available at Amazon right now for a discounted £16.69.

London 1948 Olympics bedlinen

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 03:40 AM PST

London 1948

As the UK gears up for the excitement of the Olympics next year, no doubt there will be lots of comparisons with the last time we hosted the event. That's exactly what's been marked with the London 1948 Olympics bedlinen

It's based on the poster for the 1948 Olympic games and features the famous rings over a background of the Houses of Parliament. The accompanying pillowcases are actually nicer, showing just the rings and the dates of the games in the same typography that was used on the poster. Will any of the 2012 posters be making their way into our bedrooms over 60 years later?

A double bed set costs £36.

Whilst many of the prints we feature work on some knowledge of pop culture, this Pink Eared Sausage Dog Print is just a fun design with a hint of retro influence.

The design consists of rows and rows of dachshunds going across the page. The simple graphic style of the dogs gives it a more retro look. The print is available in either A3 or A2 size, costing £40 and £60 respectively.
