Vintage Style: 25 Iconic Fashion Looks and How to Get Them by Sarah Kennedy

Posted: 07 Oct 2011 10:10 AM PDT

Vintage

Phew! That was a long title. Still, at least Vintage Style: 25 Iconic Fashion Looks and How to Get Them by Sarah Kennedy gets the message across.

A 192-page hardback from Carlton Books that's currently on pre-order (but released next week), it aims to offer advice on how to copy the 'look' of 25 most iconic women of the past century. Brigitte Bardot's Bombshell, Audrey Hepburn's Ingenue or Grace Kelly's American Classic for example, as well as later looks like cover star Debbie Harry. Each chapter opens with an image of the icon of each style, plus images of similarly styled celebrities or models.

The book also offers information on the vintage designers and fashion styles of the time, as well as styling tips, hair and make-up techniques and shopping lists to aid in acquiring vintage and reproduction pieces to go with each look. It also offers a directory of vintage and reproduction-vintage boutiques as well as hair and makeup stylists who can create period looks.

If all of that appeals, the book is currently discounted ahead of release at Amazon, priced at £12.99.

Starsky1

Appealing very much to your inner child is this original 1976 limited edition Starsky and Hutch Ford Gran Torino car. Yes, an authentic crime fighting car from 'back in the day' - and it could be yours.

According to the seller, this is a genuine PS122 car, one of 1000 Starsky and Hutch cars built by Ford between February and May 1976 in itds Chicago factory. Today less than 200 are thought to exist worldwide. This one comes with the original build sheet, plus the original owner's manual for authenticity.

In terms of specifics, the car is described as being in 'excellent original condition', with only 59000 miles on its 351W engine. It has also been serviced and MOT'd every year regardless of mileage, and the car will be sold with 3 months MOT and service. The car has also been professionally weather-sealed, the paintwork is original (aside from some work on the stripe by a past owner) and despite its age, there is no rust and no restoration work.

Starsky2

This model was used at the movie premiere in London and at other promotions for the film in 2004 and Antonio 'Huggy Bear' Fargas has signed the trunk lid. It's also just come off the back of being in a museum for seven months. Want it? £14,995 is the price, although the seller will take an offer if you want to chance your arm.

Dita Von Teese to launch dress line

Dita-Von-Teese
Internet fashionistas are all a fluster this morning. It has been announced that, on the back of her highly successful range of lingerie, Dita Von Teese is to launch her first line of clothing.

Arguable the world's most famous burlesque artist and vintage enthusiast has designed a capsule collection of retro-inspired frocks with the sort of couture styling you would expect to see the lady herself wearing on the red carpet. The starlet's line, titled Muse, is described as "classic retro-glamour" with, as you might expect, a strong influence from the 1930s to the 1950s, all available in sizes 8 to 20.

The line will initially launch at David Jones stores in Australia in November, but is due to hit the UK, Europe & the US shores not long after. Watch this space for more information!

Spira Puls Cushion

Spira-puls-orange-cushion
Fifties atomic graphics, psychedelic Sixties swirls, Seventies florals, we've featured many a cushion with these designs, but the Spira Puls Cushion must be the first influenced by Eighties' synthesisers.

Designed by Inge Karlsson, the Puls print is inspired by the frequency graphics on a synthesiser, but it also happens to give a pleasing abstract pattern. Choose from bright orange, lime green or charcoal grey, all on white backgrounds.

Each cushion is supplied with a feather insert and costs £26 from Hus and Hem.

Flowercup Chair by Leif.Designpark for De La Espada

What the Flower Cup Chair lacks in heritage (it was just designed this year), it makes up for in midcentury-looking style.

Designed by Leif.Designpark for De La Espada, the chair has a plywood frame with a backrest moulded to look like flower petals. It is available with either an oak or walnut veneer finish, set on legs made of American white oak or American black walnut respectively. The oak option costs £1,242, but if I was going to spend that amount on one chair, I splash out a little extra for the walnut at £1,290.
