Batman: Year One

After DC Comics revamped their universe with Crisis on Infinite Earths, they rebooted their key characters Superman with John Byrne, Wonder Woman by George Perez and Frank Miller's Batman: Year One with artist David Mazzzuchelli. Originally printed in four parts in 1987, the origin adventure was a massive hit with fans and detailed the early days of Bruce Wayne's war on crime in a grim film noir-influenced version of Gotham City.

A very important chapter in the Batman mythos, Batman: Year One is in many ways more important than the more well-known Dark Knight Returns and had a strong influence on Chris Nolan's Batman Begins. Recently announced as the upcoming direct to DVD DC Animation project, fans finally have not only a glimpse of what Year One will look like as an animated movie, but are also finally privy to the voice cast.

Via ComicBookResources:

Hot on the heels of a convention season-debut for "Green Lantern: Emerald Knights," Warner Bros. Animation has begun to roll out the plans for their next DC Universe Animated Original Movie: a feature-lenght adaptation of Frank Miller and David David Mazzucchelli's 1986 hard-boiled comic classic "Batman: Year One."

The Hollywood Reporter today has word on the full details of the project. Aside from a first look at stills from the feature directed by Lauren Montgomery and Sam Liu, the trade reported on the casting and creative lineup for the feature. "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston's Lt. James Gordon (years ahead of his ascent to Gotham's Police Commissioner), joining former "The O.C." actor Ben McKenzie as Bruce Wayne. Rounding out the vocal cast will be Eliza Dushku and Katee Sackhoff who play Selina Kyle and Sarah Essen respectively. Alex Rocco takes on the part of mob boss Carmine Falcone in the script by Tab Murphy.

"The source material is surprisingly cinematic; it's a pretty straight forward literal retelling," executive producer Bruce Timm told the trade. "Mazzucchelli's artwork is beautifully composed and we were able to refer to the comic for about 80 percent of the camera setups."

"I wasn't aware of this level of storytelling in animation. I confess that freely," Cranston added. "They didn't give the characters the short shrift. I was stunned."

Timm said that the film would have a debut at July's Comic-Con International in San Diego. "Year One" is expected to be followed up by "Justice League: Doom" – an adaptation of Mark Waid and Howard Porter's "JLA: Tower of Babel" – and according to rumors a take on Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" may be next in the offing.

For more on "Year One," check out both pieces at The Hollywood Reporter, and stay tuned to CBR News and Spinoff Online for all the word on the future of DC Universe Animated.

eBay watch: 1960s Mauthe wall clock

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 12:16 PM PDT

Mauthe

I don't know the maker, but this 1960s Mauthe wall clock certainly oozes midcentury style.

The manufacturer is actually out of Germany, producing this square wooden wall clock with platic accents and brass hands, finished off with a modern quartz movement, battery power and the maker's name in brass just under the '12'.

It's sized around 13 x 13 inches and is described as being in 'very good' condition. Price? Right now it's at £5.50.

We were already aware of Hans Bolling's wooden ducks, so are delighted to see that his Oscar the Dog had also been reissued as part of the same Architect Made series.

Oscar was designed back in 1953 and whilst he has the same midcentury style as the ducks, he is an all together more sophisticated creature. Oscar can sit, crawl, stand or beg – just like a real dog, except this one has been meticulously crafted from beechwood, maple, wenge and brown leather. He stands at 13cm and costs £75.

New Sir Peter Blake prints launch: Homage to Damien Hirst - Butterfly Man series

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 03:41 AM PDT

It still has that distinctive, vintage-esque collage style, but Sir Peter Blake also gives a nod to the contemporary art scene with the launch of his new set of prints, Homage to Damien Hirst - Butterfly Man.

According to the man himself: 'Damien Hirst has used butterflies in a lot in his work, and it was pointed out that 'the butterfly man' owes more than a little to his work, so I was happy to dedicate him in homage to Damien. I am an enormous admirer of Damien's work.'

The new works use vintage postcard images as backdrops to his collage of the butterfly man, dozens of butterflies and an assortment of eclectic characters from the miscellaneous print paraphernalia that Blake has hoarded over the years.

The Butterfly Man, Hollywood captures the golden age of Hollywood glamour with its vista of the Hollywood hills and kitsch mini-mansions. Frolicking in the foreground along with the butterfly man are numerous Hollywood legends including Charlie Chaplin, James Dean, Laurel & Hardy, Errol Flynn, Elvis, Marilyn and Judy Garland.

Blake returns to home ground for Butterfly Man, Eastbourne, celebrating the glory of the British seaside holiday. The butterfly man orchestrates his pets in front of the statue of Saigo Takamori (famous samurai) in The Butterfly Man, Tokyo, along with Japanese ladies in kimonos and visitors such as African tribesmen and a European lady in formal costume. The butterfly man also travels to North Africa, where he releases his butterflies in the souk at Tunis and finally, he goes to Venice and the piazza San Marco.

Each print is a silkscreen in 24 colours and 2 glazes on paper measuring 32.5 x 29.5 inches, from a signed edition of 100. 75 from the edition are being released as a boxed set priced at £7,500, and the remaining 25 prints are available individually at £1,800 each. The Hollywood and Venice images are apparently expected to sell out very quickly, so if you are interested, you might want to move fairly quickly.

Adidas classic three-stripe Trefoil t-shirt

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 03:25 AM PDT

Adidas

I was thinking about t-shirts earlier (due to the warm weather), something timeless and classic - and I ended up with the Adidas three-stripe Trefoil t-shirt.

It really is a timeless piece of clothing, pretty much universally worn in the 1970s and still an understated gem in the modern era. Adidas looks to have five colour options available online right now, including the black and white above, all with the same contrast collar, cuffs, logo and three stripes on the arms, all made of 100 per cent cotton.

All are available directly from the company too, £26 is the asking price.

1950s 'Navy Daisy and Rose' dress

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 12:45 AM PDT

Floraldressa
The 'Navy Daisy and Rose' dress has been made exclusively for the V&A and is about as authentic as you can get without jumping in a time machine and going back 50 years to buy a similar outfit.

The dress has been adapted from a 1950s fabric designed for Horrockses Fashions, one of the most respected ready-to-wear labels of the late 1940s and 1950s.  The shape of the dress was developed from an original 1950s day dress in the V&A's archives and it has a fitted waist and bodice.

Along with it's exclusivity comes a price tag of £95, but you're paying for a true recreation of beauty, in 100% cotton. But yours online.
