RETROKIMMER: ThE NiNeS LIVE AT WOODRUFFS

Posted: 20 Aug 2011 02:06 PM PDT

Lesley and I hung out until 2 am in my home town of Ypsilanti, Michigan. My main reason to trek down there was to scout a new band ThE NiNeS... My friend Randy Bernard's son Kevin is the bass player for the band. It was a real treat to hear three young energetic bands. The Muggs were the headliner and one of my favorite Detroit drummers Todd Glass was on stage.

Todd Glass

Todd Glass plays with the Muggs, Jimmy McCarty's Mystery Train, and tours Europe with Robert Gordon and our pal Greasy Carlisi. A very busy man indeed. It is so hard to photograph Todd as he is so into those heavy beats... That hair! But I finally got a cool shot of TG... After the Muggs set was over I went to see Todd and he gave me one of his sticks and autographed it for me. YAY

Todd Glass and Greg Ornazian's stick!

Both Greg and Todd can really pound. Went onstage and said hey Todd! He looked up and had a big grin! Todd said, Retrokimmer! You're here in person! Nice.. I had wanted one of his autographed sticks to add to my collection.

ThE NiNeS

My job last night was to scout ThE NiNeS. I have to say I really got into these young guys and their energy.. They covered Mark Farner's song "Inside Lookin Out" I loved it. Sat at my table keeping beat with my drum sticks.. So much fun. The young kids around me were surprised to see that Kimmer new every word of the lyric and every drum beat too. Such a blast!

Read my other story HERE

Ian Kirwan

Ian Kirwan is just drop dead gorgeous. Such bright talent and beautiful smile. He can really play that guitar and has hot vocals as well. His mom Jill, dad Jim and fabulous grandmother Peggy sat with me all night. Peggy and I got along like a house on fire... Peggy... I lost your number so get mine from Randy ok? Or email me retrokimmer@gmail.com. Think Peggy might come out and play with me soon! Maybe next weekend in Ann Arbor...

Kevin Bernard

Lesley really liked Kevin and his music the most! He was the quiet one... What a fantastic bass he plays.. A 1973 Fender Jazz Bass. Kevin's dad is also a great bass player that handed his talent down to his son. Randy plays with Slaves of Illuminati I hope to shoot their next show soon...

Lesley with drummer Greg Ornazian (my stick!)

Greg was a big surprise to me... Wow what a fabulous drummer. Check Greg's style in the video shot last night. Boy can really blast those skins.. Ian's mom Jill told me that after they rehearse at her home she has a ton of splintered wood to collect! He plays with really heavy sticks. The guys were all so great looking, positive and fun.

I walked by them on the sidewalk in Depot Town and they yelled out that I should hang out till 12 midnight to catch their set. I popped back and said hey I am here to shoot YOU... with that they ran up and we met their folks and girlfriends too.

I forgot to charge my handycam so I had just enough battery to shoot the first song. They were so great for just a three piece. Wish I could have got the Farner song too...

Randy Bernard Brian Begdorian and Todd Glass

Randy, Brian, and I made pests of ourselves hanging out with Todd and slowing down their move out. Brian is the lead singer of Slaves of Illuminati and was the lead vocals for one of my favorite bands BOGART. We young girls loved to catch that band at the Studio Lounge because they were just so personable and nice to their fans. Love Brian's voice too. Bri is just a beautiful one and such a great friend to me.

I met Brian this summer and we became fast pals. Love his wife Victoria too. Beautiful couple.

Read my story about Brian HERE

Lesley Randy Jill and Peggy

Randy Kimmer Jill and Jim

I couldn't believe how short I look with this crowd! I am 5'8 and still looked like an elf! Funny group too. All in all we had such a fun time and we look forward to helping promote NiNeS around the globe!

Much love and hugs to all from the gig last night! All the bands were fantastic...

[New post] Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance trailer

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance trailer

Ghost Rider is a cult icon comic book hero, more familiar to fans for his image than the actual comic books in which he appeared. A confluence of cultural trends of the 1970's, Ghost Rider was an unholy mutant child of Kiss and Evel Knievel. Battling strange villains, Johnny Blaze faded from the comic book world but remained ingrained in the pop culture subconscious, leading to a feature film.

The first movie stuck quite closely to the comic book plot-wise, even including obscure characters such as 'the Caretaker' played by Sam Elliott. Co-starring Peter Fonda as Mephisto and Eva Mendes as love interest Roxy, the movie was critically panned but earned a healthy 45 Million in its February opening weekend. There's obviously a fan base for this kind of movie and with the buzz around the Avengers, Spider-Man and Batman still around, why not make another?

When the first Ghost Rider was released, Cage stated that he was interested in a second Ghost Rider film and wanted to explore Johnny Blaze embracing his curse, turning to booze and oblivion rather than moping about in angst. Nic Cage is a self-professed comic book fan so devoted to the medium that he changed his name after hero for hire Luke Cage. Known for his troubled finances and outlandish behavior, his portrayal of Johnny Blaze was a quirky Elvis impersonator type with a childlike innocence and maverick charm. It deviated from the comic book persona greatly, but for me it made the film enjoyable. The only slow parts ironically consisted of the flaming demonic rider sequences.

Directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (the same team behind the Crank films who were pulled from the diabolical Jonah Hex movie which was later taken up by Jimmy Hayward of Horton Hears A Who! fame) , the sequel to the 2007 film will of course ramp up the action, over the top excitement and bizarre comedy, such as hellfire/pee. David Goyer (screenwriter of the first Ghost Rider, all three Blade films, Batman Begins, the Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Rises) has returned to pen the script and it's a grindhouse doozy.

The sequel will see Cage return to the role of Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider, but this time he will be drafted by Idris Elba, playing a drunken monk, into protecting a child from a villain with satanic resources and insider knowledge of Blaze's curse. Christopher Lambert of Highlander fame will co-star as a sword-wielding monk fighting alongside Blaze against the supervillain Blackout. Many details are unclear, but the trailer indicates that it could be a fun ride.

1980s Puma Bluebird trainers reissued

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 11:42 AM PDT

Blue1

A gem from the 1980s reissued, with these Puma Bluebird trainers certain to be of particular interest to Cardiff City supporters.

Why? Well, the colour scheme for the two reissues (the other pictured over the page) are inspired by the home and away colours of Cardiff City. Who are, of course, nicknamed The Bluebirds - and whose fans took up these shoes 'back in the day'.

Anyway, aside from that, this 1982 trainer, originally a lightweight running shoe, has a suede upper, leather lining, a natural colour injection moulded PVC sole and a gold foil decal. Both pairs retail for £65.

Red Ditsy Floral Print Vanity Case at Topshop

Topshop1

Big thanks to Soo Miles, who spotted this Red Ditsy Floral Print Vanity Case at Topshop and shared her find with us. We're now sharing it with you.

It is pretty much what it says, a vintage-style vanity case with a retro floral pattern and equally period 'grab' handle, fastener and trim (the latter matching the handle). Open it up and you'll see the Topshop label, which gives the game away a bit, but we don't think that matters too much.

Want one? You can secure one online for £45. See a shot of the case open over the page.

Midcentury-inspired Oliver Rocker by & Then Design

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 08:08 AM PDT

Oliver

It's a design team we have mentioned before, specifically with its lounge chair and cabinet collection, but the Oliver Rocker by & Then Design has slipped under our radar for some reason.

Not anymore, here it is. Inspired by 1950s Scandinavian design, this midcentury-style gem is available in both beech (pictured above) and oak, with the frame created using traditional woodworking techniques. Once complete, it is finished off with an upholstered cushion with a deep-buttoned pattern.

A timeless piece, that's for sure, it's priced from £860.

eBay watch: Original 1950s midcentury plant stand

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 05:36 AM PDT

Plant

A few of these appear on eBay and are always popular. But this original 1950s midcentury plant stand comes with a very low starting price.

Whether you use it for your plants or ornaments, it's still an eye-catching piece. The main triangular table is made of chipboard and finished with a cream Formica top with a gold and black plastic rim. The table also has three removable wooden feet placed at a slight angle, a wooden stem and three small platforms each made of chipboard with Formica tops.

The Plant Stand is described as being 'in very good vintage condition', with some 'age related scratches and marks' on the Formica tops, but nothing significant. Just 99p right now.

“A Visual Compendium of Notable Haircuts in Popular Music” Print

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 02:54 AM PDT

Haircutsprint_main_b_434x581
Pop Chart Lab's mission is to render the world in the form of charts, covering a wide range of popular culture subjects, my favourite being this one.

"A Visual Compendium of Notable Haircuts in Popular Music" is a limited edition print that as the name clearly states offers illustrations of music's most memorable styles. The illustrations are just of the hair (including facial hair where applicable) without faces, but they are all pretty easy to recognise – although initial and surname are given below just in case. As you would expect McCartney's mop top, Ziggy Stardust era Bowie and Morrissey's quiff are in there, but with plenty of others too. The print measures 18 by 24 inches and has been signed by the artists.

Buy it online from the Pop Chart Lab priced $25.

Hoo Hoo Owl Clock

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 02:35 AM PDT

Hoohooclock
Whilst we can't claim the Hoo Hoo Owl Clock as a design classic (unlike George Nelson's Omar Owl clock from his Zootimer range), it still has a certain charm.

It is named after the sound that apparently owls make in Sweden, where the clock is made. It is made from acrylic with a walnut finish so it won't look out of place amongst your midcentury style furniture.

The clock costs £25 from HunkyDory Home.

Modern Vintage Style by Emily Chalmers

Modern-vintage-style-book

Emily Chalmers, owner of East London boutique Caravan, has brought together her love of vintage bits & bobs with her flair for interior design to create Modern Vintage Style, a compendium of pick & mix retro style.

The book is full to bursting with inspiring ideas; mixing flea market finds, traditional crafts, vintage fabrics and other retro goodies with more modern pieces, accomplishing an eclectic, homely look that just works. Perhaps not the best book for vintage purists, but perfect for those who like to mix up their eras & styles.

£11.69 on Amazon. See the website for more details.
