eBay watch: 1950s Danish midcentury mini cabinet Posted: 04 Mar 2011 10:04 AM PST There's no brand on this, but there is no denying that the 1950s Danish midcentury mini cabinet pictured above is an eye-catching piece of design.
Screaming the era, this gem has those 'skinny' angled legs, a grained oak and teak finish plus two shelves behind the two doors. Just pull on the brass handles to get inside.
The seller ships worldwide for a modest price and the selling price right now is equally as modest. Just £9.

Finnish Design Shop giving away four Eero Aarnio Ball Chairs Posted: 04 Mar 2011 08:17 AM PST Giveaways on social networks is nothing new, but four authentic Eero Aarnio Ball Chairs as a giveaway really is something worth mentioning.
One Facebook follower of the Finnish Design Shop in Finland, Italy, Europe and the US will get one, which means us Brits will have less of a chance compared to Italian readers, but it's still worth a punt. Just head to Facebook and follow the instructions. You have until April 21st 2011.
The Ball Chair is a 60s classic. Designed by Eero Aarnio in 1963, the circular seat has become an icon of the era, featured in countless movies, artworks, design magazines and of course, homes. It sells at the retailer for a whopping 6,450 Euros, should you miss out.

Space age-inspired INQ Cloud Touch and INQ Cloud Q mobiles phones by ChauhanStudio Posted: 04 Mar 2011 06:32 AM PST Some of you might recall the Colombo home phones by ChauhanStudio in 2008. The Joe Colombo-inspired handsets were first featured on our Switched On Set site and went down a storm, not least over here too. Well, the same designers are back with new phones, this time playing with the mobile and producing the INQ Cloud Touch and INQ Cloud Q. Best of all? They'll be pretty cheap to buy.
Like the Colombo, the handsets are once again inspired by 1970s space age design, you can imagine either sat next to some period Artemide lighting and not looking out of place (if they had mobiles phone then, obviously). But these are very modern handsets with deep Facebook integration as soon as you switch on, Spotify integrated into the handsets (via a dedicated key) and the Android operating system, so you can access all the apps on the Google platform. The obvious difference between the two is that the Q has a built-in keyboard, while the Touch has a touchscreen (hence the name). There's even the option to go 'orange', for the full 70s experience, check that out below. All will be available from Carphone Warehouse over various networks - the phone is free if you sign up to a £20 per month tariff.

Royal gift wrap from Rockett St George Posted: 04 Mar 2011 05:20 AM PST No matter what your opinion is on it, the influence of the royal wedding is creeping onto the high street and inspiring designs such as this royal gift wrap, which is available from Rockett St George. The royals in question on this design date from a little bit further back in the twentieth century - the wrap is covered with reproductions of vintage stamps featuring Edward VII and George V. The pattern created by the colours of the stamps creates an attractive design ... perfect for wrapping up a wedding gift. The paper costs £1.50 a sheet. See it online |
Ninety Nine Invaders and a Spaceship Print Posted: 04 Mar 2011 05:12 AM PST There has been a glut of space invaders-inspired products around recently, but if you are still feeling nostalgic for the early arcade game, then you may like the Ninety Nine Invaders and Spaceship Print by Peters and Janes. The print consists of a repeat print of a white space invader (presumably 99 of them, but I haven't had time to count) plus one spaceship amongst their rows. The print is available in either orange or grey, framed or unframed. The print costs £25 unframed or £65 framed from Peters and Janes via Not on the High Street. |
The Modern Danish Warehouse Posted: 04 Mar 2011 05:05 AM PST We featured this last year and now The Modern Danish Warehouse is back again, this time open from 5 to 20 March. As before, the warehouse takes place in an old Art Deco garage in London, SW3. They are promising to have 250 pieces of mid-century Danish furniture for sale, this time with an interesting sounding focus on vintage school furniture from the likes of Arne Jacobsen. To bring the designs up-to-date, they'll also be showing some of the typography-based work of Copenhagen agency E-Types. Take a look at their website for opening hours and more details. |

Fred Perry x Amy Winehouse spring/summer 2011 range Posted: 04 Mar 2011 04:53 AM PST The first range was launched last October and was generally well received. A good enough response for a second Fred Perry x Amy Winehouse collection, this time the spring/summer 2011 range.
According to Fred Perry, much of the range is apparently 'a tiki re-working' of Fred Perry classics, including the Harrington and the twin-tipped polo shirt. But with the collection now double its original size (32 pieces), there is also now room for bags, shoes and accessories plus a few new clothing designs.
See over the page for lots more images from the range, including a gingham bowling shirt, a Hawaiian print halter neck dress and shirt and scarlet red hot pants alongside accessories including the Amy barrel bag, wide waist straw belts, a printed silk scarf plus suede and leather moccasins in a variety of colours. On the shelves and on the website from Monday 7th March if you want to buy.
