NOTE FROM RON HANNAH: JOHN FRAGA (RIP)

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 07:20 PM PDT

Fragas

Kim,

A sad day for me, to find that my old friend has passed away. I lived with John, his brother Jim who was also a bass player, Marc Marcano (Rockets) and Drew Abbott (Silver Bullet Band) for a few years back in the early 70s in an old farmhouse on Auburn Road.

What a house full of music that was, always a band rehearsing in the basement. I spoke with John by phone a few years ago, and found that his brother had died, also of a heart attack. John was simply the most kind gentle and funny man I've ever known.

I hope he and his brother have put together and all-bass band wherever they are. I've attached a photo of John and Jim from a party many years ago. Not a great photo, but if you want to post it, feel free.

Thanks for putting such a nice tribute up on your web site.

Ron Hannah

Thanks so much Ron for the lovely note. I have received a lot of really nice letters about John.

Emmy Etie has shot some really nice photos of The Deniz Tek Group on tour right now down under. Wish we could catch one these shows! Would love to see Deniz with Steve and Art Godoy! Well we will get to see Deniz soon enough as he'll be here April 19th at The Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor. Deniz is playing with the Stooges and not as an opening act as I understand it.

Hope to meet Emmy one day, just love these shots so much. I should shoot some interview questions over to her today. Then we may be able learn a little more about her work.

[New post] New Green Lantern trailer wows fans

New Green Lantern trailer wows fans

These days, being a comic book fan is akin to being a sadomasochist as films based on decades of material are altered to meet studio executives' needs and often hurried into production. Warner Bros arguable has the keys to a stable of the greatest comic book creations in print (an opinion held even by Marvel EIC Joe Quesada!), yet legal troubles and other concerns have hampered production of these creations for the big screen.

When a relatively obscure second tier hero Green Lantern was announced, the comic book realm rippled with anticipation mixed with worry. A wonderful blend of science fiction and superhero action, the emerald gladiator was custom-made for a major motion picture rife with CGi treatment. But... what if it all goes wrong? What if the wrong actor is cast as the devil-may care test pilot Hal Jordan, if the costume is altered, what if the back-story or supporting cast are changed in order to appease what the studio thinks is necessary in order to appeal to the movie-going public?

With high hopes and concerned fans, the initial Green Lantern trailer was less than impressive. A goofy performance by Ryan Reynolds solidified the opinion that he was wrongly cast, the depiction of Hal Jordan as a slacker with a penchant for a bachelor's life left fans groaning as it appeared that their beloved character was going to be reduced to an ironic joke on superheroes rather than a celebration of the comic book idiom.

Premiered this year's WonderCon, the new Green Lantern movie trailer has been changing opinions (for the better).

The new trailer reflects the gravity of the comic, addresses the humor of Hal Jordan tempered by his maturity into the hero that I hoped we would get to see on screen.  Color me surprised and excited.

[New post] Next DC Animated project announced, JLA: 'Doom'

Next DC Animated project announced, JLA: 'Doom'

The DC animated straight to DVD feature films have been a massive hit with fans. In most cases, they have adapted stand-out storylines from the classic comics, such as New Frontier, Death of Superman and Under the Hood. Just announced for release comes another great story for adaptation, Mark Waid's 'Tower of Babel' from his first year as head writer following Grant Morrison on JLA.

As written in the comic, Tower of Babel involves Batman's 'doomsday protocols' designed to take down each super-powered member of the team. When the protocols fall into enemy hands, the team finds themselves battling the most brilliant schemes of the dark knight detective. The piece below claims that Tower of Babel will serve more as an inspiration than as a source for adaptation, so it is unclear what will be changed, but with the talented Dwayne McDuffie involved (he has written for the Justice League animated series as well as the Crisis on Two Earths movie, Teen Titans, Static Shock and All-Star Superman) I am sure it will an excellent adventure. McDuffie's final animated project (sadly he passed away earlier this year), the feature will see release after the hotly anticipated Green Lantern: Emerald Knights and Batman: Year One films arrive on DVD this Summer.

Via Spinoff Online:

Warner Bros. Animation will follow Green Lantern: Emerald Knights and Batman: Year One with an animated feature "loosely inspired" by the 2000 JLA story arc "Tower of Babel."

Announced Friday at WonderCon in San Francisco by executive producer Bruce Timm, the tentatively titled Justice League: Doom is the last work of respected writer and producer Dwayne McDuffie, who passed away on Feb. 22.

Written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Howard Porter, Drew Geraci and others, "Tower of Babel" centers on the perceived betrayal of the Justice League by Batman, whose secret files detailing the weaknesses of his colleagues fall into the hands of Ra's al Ghul. He uses the information to incapacitate the League while distracting Batman with the theft of the bodies of Thomas and Martha Wayne. The revelation that the Dark Knight had devises contingency plans to defeat each of his teammates naturally creates friction, leading the JLA to consider expelling him from their ranks.

Elements of "Tower of Babel" were incorporated into "Starcrossed," the 2004 three-part series finale of the Justice League animated series.

Justice League: Doom is set to be Warner Bros. Animation's first direct-to-DVD feature of 2012. For more details about Warner Bros. Animation's next release, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, check out Comic Book Resource's WonderCon panel report.

[New post] New Thor TV spot establishes shared Marvel Universe

New Thor TV spot establishes shared Marvel Universe

Since the days of Marvel's Silver Age, the shared quality of the Marvel Universe has been a major selling point for readers. Opening an issue of the Fantastic Four to see Spider-Man looking for work or even Iron Man appearing in the latest Hulk comic was a real thrill as it cemented in place that these characters all lived in the same reality, something that DC Comics only rarely reflected when their heroes co-starred in their Brave and the Bold series.

It wasn't just that Iron Man, Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor, Daredevil and Captain America all existed in the same world, but they had opinions on each other and reacted to the other hero's style and personality. The Fantastic Four's Thing was constantly harangued by hate mail asking who would win in a fight, him or the Hulk while Spider-Man was regarded largely as a loose cannon by the entire super powered community (except for Sue Storm who was sure a kind and clever person his underneath the webbed mask.

While many of Marvel's most popular characters are still tied up in legal red tape (such as the X-Men, Spider-Man and Daredevil) that restrict Marvel Entertainment from using them, it is interesting (and yes, exciting in a nerdy way) to see Iron Man, Hulk and Thor all mentioned on screen in a studio trailer.
