Marvel Comics In The 1970s: An Issue-By-Issue Field Guide To A Pop Culture Phenomenon

Marvel Comics In The 1970s: An Issue-By-Issue Field Guide To A Pop Culture Phenomenon
By popular demand, TwoMorrows Publishing presents Marvel Comics in the 1970s, the sequel to Pierre Comtois' heralded first volume on the 1960s! This book covers the company's final historical phase: the twilight years of the 1970s, after the initial '60s wave of popularity pushed them to the forefront of the comics industry, and made many of their characters household names. This full decade of pop-culture history saw Stan Lee's role as writer diminish as he ascended to Publisher, the stunning departure of Jack Kirby to DC (and later return to Marvel), the rise of Roy Thomas as editor (and eventual Editor In Chief), and the introduction of a new wave of writers and artists who would expand the boundaries of comics beyond super-heroes, while planting the seeds for the industry's eventual self-destruction. The Spider-Man "drug" issues, Conan the Barbarian, Tomb of Dracula, Master of Kung Fu, Howard the Duck, Star Wars, the new X-Men, and more are covered in detail-along with the creators who wrote and drew them, including Chris Claremont, Barry Windsor-Smith, Gene Colan, Marv Wolfman, Steve Gerber, John Romita, Gil Kane, Sal Buscema, and others. So don't be satisfied with only half the story! Check out Marvel Comics in the 1970s and find out why Marvel was once hailed as The House of Ideas!

Bright Sailor Slacks from Tara Starlet

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 10:15 AM PDT

Brightsailors

Fifties frocks are always an option catered for by the many retro brands out there, and often replicated on the high street too. Finding equally snappy separates can be more of a challenge, making these Bright Sailor Slacks from British brand Tara Starlet even more special.

Available in a range of vivid colours, the slacks have an unmistakeably fifties feel thanks to their stylish structure. A high waistline combined with wide legs helps to create a cool retro silhouette, while the addition of nautical-inspired hip buttons accentuates the hips for a great hourglass.

They're available from Tara Starlet for £60 per pair.

Vivi Rhinestone Dress by Milly

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 10:00 AM PDT

Millyvivi

Fashion historians might best remember the 1960s as a decade of daring change, but not all the icons of the time had the daring license of rock and roll's stylish few. For your own piece of that very sixties balance between classic style and originality, this Vivi Rhinestone Dress by Milly is a great choice.

Reminiscent of the high end fashions of Jackie O, this wool blend dress has a simplistic and timeless shift shape. The sleeveless cut, high neckline and underbust belting create a very retro silhouette, with the bright colour and textured fabric keeping it youthful and fresh.

Get yours from My Wardrobe online for £375.

Ladies Cameo fabric by Melody Miller

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 06:53 AM PDT

Il_fullxfull_253613929
I'll confess I'm not the type to make my own clothes, cushions or curtains, but I was then I'd definitely make something with this Ladies Cameo fabric by Melody Miller.

The fabric is part of Miller's Ruby Star Rising Range produced by Japanese company Kokka. The ivory background features a range of cameos of glamorous retro ladies with sophisticated hairdos and fancy blouses. The material is of home decor weight for suitable for making curtains, cushions, bedding, as well as clothes and bags.

It cost £16.50 per metre from Fabric Yard on Etsy.

“A Scene From..” Prints by Graphic Nothing

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 06:50 AM PDT

Blow-Up-750x530
I loved Graphic Nothing's Mona List Revamped and album cover remixed prints, even if it took a few minutes of staring and squinting to see what they were. More easily recognisable, but just as good is the "A Scene From" series of prints from the same designer.

I would imagine if you are reading this site that you will recognise the above image as being David Hemmings setting up his camera in Blow-Up. Other cult and classic movie moments given Graphic Nothing's makeover including Mick Jagger dancing with a neon light tube in Performance, Cameron, Sloane and Ferris posing in Chicago's Art Gallery in Ferris Bueller's Day Off and of course, a scene from Star Wars just before Ben Kenobi dies.

The prints are available in three sizes A3 (£19), A2 (£28) and A1 (£46) from Some Prints.

eBay watch: 1960s Junghans Ato-Mat mantle clock

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 05:19 AM PDT

Clock

Not just another space age 1960s clock, this Junghans Ato-Mat mantle clock has a little more of the 'classic' about it.

But it still looks very much of the era, perfect for an early-to-mid 1960s room. The case is wooden, with a glass face and those minimal hands and numbers (represented as lines). The whole thing is around 26cm wide and 17.5cm high.

According to the seller, the clock is in 'superb' condition, with the only sign of wear being on one of the back bottom corners of the case - very slight wear though.

If you fancy owning it, bidding is at £4.99 right now.

Paloma Dress from Dollydagger

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 04:00 AM PDT

Dollydagger-paloma-dress-greenblack-300
It is far too horrifically early to be thinking about Christmas parties, however somehow this Paloma Dress from Dollydagger has got us thinking about mid-winter cocktails already.

Everything about this dress, from the pleated full skirt to the emerald taffeta fabric, screams retro partywear and would no doubt see you conga-ing around the corridors of certain Madison Avenue offices, cocktail in hand. Unlike most prom-style frocks, the Paloma has a slash neck, far more demure than the usual halterneck. It is also available in black, red and black & turquoise stripe.

The Paloma dress is available from Dollydagger in mid-October for £149. See the website for more details.
