PHIL SPECTOR'S WALL OF SOUND

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 08:57 PM PDT

The Ronettes Phil Spector George Harrison

A good portion of my favorite Retro 60's songs were produced by Phil Spector. A very unstable musical genius with a vision. His methods in recording have never been matched though Motown's Funk Brothers and Berry Gordy gave him a run for his money.

Phil's impact on American Pop Music is undeniable... I did not even know until tonight that Phil produced so many songs with the Beatles. Though it is said that Paul McCartney didn't approve of Phil's orchestration on Beatle songs like "Long and Winding Road"

Phil Spector

Considered by many to be the greatest rock and roll producer of all time. In the early Sixties, Phil created the famous "Wall of Sound" technique that inspired countless musicians and producers..

The Ronettes

He put girl groups on the map with hits by The Ronettes and The Crystals. Brought a dramatic, orchestral flair to teen pop that was unheard of at the time.

The Crystals

Phil Spector's Number 1 Hits

The Teddy Bears, "To Know Him Is To Love Him" (1959)
The Crystals, "He's A Rebel" (1962)
The Righteous Brothers, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" (1965)
The Beatles, "The Long And Winding Road" (1970)
George Harrison, "My Sweet Lord" (1970)
Spector's Complete Discography

To attain his "Wall of Sound" signature sound, Phil Spector gathered large groups of musicians (playing some instruments not generally used for ensemble playing, such as electric and acoustic guitars) playing orchestrated parts—often doubling and tripling many instruments playing in unison for a fuller sound.

Spector also arranged the songs for large groups of musicians playing instruments traditionally associated with orchestras (such as strings, woodwinds, and brass). Spector himself called his technique "a Wagnerian approach to rock & roll: little symphonies for the kids". Read More

Just look at some of the songs/films Phil Spector produced.... it's staggering!

"Uptown," The Crystals; "He's Sure The Boy I Love," The Crystals; "Baby, I Love You," The Ronettes; "Walking In the Rain," The Ronettes; "River Deep - Mountain High," Ike and Tina Turner; "Black Pearl," Sonny Charles and the Checkmates, Ltd.; "Mother," John Lennon; "Power to the People," John Lennon; "Bangla-Desh,"John Lennon; "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)," John Lennon and Yoko Ono; "Rock And Roll High School," The Ramones; "Do You Remember Rock N' Roll Radio," The Ramones wrote or co-wrote (not produced by Spector): "Spanish Harlem," Ben E. King \. Appears in the movies: "The T.A.M.I. Show" (1964), "The Big T.N.T. Show" (1966), "Easy Rider" (1969), "The Concert for Bangladesh" (1972), "Imagine" (1972), "Mayor of the Sunset Strip" (2003)

The 13th Floor Elevators

The 13th Floor Elevators were an American rock band from Austin, Texas formed by guitarist and vocalist Roky Erickson, electric jug player Tommy Hall, and guitarist Stacy Sutherland, which existed from 1965 to 1969. During their career, the band released four LPs and seven 45s for the International Artists record label.

Rare performance video of 13 Floor Elevators....

You know... strange as it may seem... since I began Retro: Kimmer's blog in 2008... So many of the musicians and music fans I have met have given me such a musical education. 13th Floor Elevators are band I never heard of... Deniz Tek is a huge Roky Erickson fan and Deniz recorded with Roky years ago in Texas. Deniz told me alot about this band. My Facebook friends have filled in a lot of history as well. Gotta love the internet!

Deniz Tek and Radio Birdman

From Deniz: I've been inspired by the voice and songs of Roky Erickson aka Roger Kynard Erickson, from my teen years. His band the 13th Floor Elevators recorded at Sugar Hill in the 60s on the International Artists label. Some say they spearheaded psychedelic rock.

Deniz's band Radio Birdman did a great cover of "You're Going to Miss Me"... Occasionally I will post one version or another as lots of garage bands covered Miss Me too. It is just a classic rock song... Sad that I missed out on these great bands years ago but how LUCKY I am to meet the bands now and hear the back stories of these great songs...

The 13th Floor Elevators found some commercial and artistic success in 1966-67, before dissolving amid legal troubles and drug use in late 1968 (familiar story...). As one of the first psychedelic bands, their contemporary influence has been acknowledged by 1960s musicians such as Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Peter Albin of Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Chris Gerniottis of Zakary Thaks. Their debut 45 "You're Gonna Miss Me", a national Billboard #55 hit in 1966, was featured on the 1972 compilation Nuggets: Original Artifacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968, which is considered vital in the history of garage rock and the development of punk rock.

Punk band Television played their song "Fire Engine" live in the mid-1970s. In the 1980s-90s, the 13th Floor Elevators influenced important bands such as Primal Scream and Spacemen 3, both of whom covered their songs, and 14 Iced Bears who use an electric jug on their single "Beautiful Child".

In 2009 the International Artists released a ten CD box set entitled Sign of the 3-Eyed Men, which included the mono and new, alternate stereo mixes of the original albums together with two albums of previously unreleased material and a number of rare live recordings.

THE COWSILLS: THE RAIN THE PARK AND OTHER THINGS...

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 01:06 PM PDT

Occasionally when I am stuck for a story to write, I'll post music videos on my Facebook page and see what my friends feel strongly about... This past week I posted the Cowsills video of The Rain, The Park, and Other Things...

The Cowsills did have two Number Two hits, "The Rain, the Park and Other Things" and the title track to the hit rock musical Hair. They were nearly reality-television pioneers, as well: The filming of their daily life together was briefly considered for a TV program, before producers decided to fictionalize the story as The Partridge Family.

The Cowsills

My friends and fans jumped all over this song... and The Cowsills in general...

The family band first performed in 1965. Bill, Bob, Barry, John, Susan, and Paul in tandem with mom Barbara were the Cowsills line up. Barry sadly passed away in the wake of Hurricane Katrina at age 51. Read More

Bill was the front man and he too sadly passed away at age 58. Bill Cowsill, who was once considered as a possible replacement for Brian Wilson in the Beach Boys' touring band, was the first family member to release a solo album, 1971's Nervous Breakthrough.

Some of the siblings eventually fell out of the music business; Bob, John, Susan and Paul briefly reunited in the late Seventies, recording a set of songs that went unreleased. It was the first of the Cowsills' periodic comebacks, most recently in 1998, when they released an Internet-only album.

The Cowsills

Both Barry and Susan had their lives turned upside down by Hurricane Katrina, which hit the gulf coast in August 2005, since both were residents of the New Orleans area at the time. Susan and her family lost their home and most of their belongings but they were all safe during the hurricane and it's aftermath and returned to live in New Orleans in January 2006.

Barry, unfortunately, did not get out of New Orleans before Katrina hit and was among the missing of Hurricane Katrina for 4 months. Then, sadly, on January 4th, 2006, The Cowsill family got the news that Barry's body had been found and identified

Barbara Cowsill died of emphysema in Tempe, Arizona in 1985.

Susan Cowsill has embarked on a solo career and has a new CD of singer/songwriter music that is getting high critical praise. The CD "Just Believe It" is on the Blue Corn Music label and features guest vocals by Adam Durst of the Counting Crows and Lucinda Williams.

She is good...

Quotes from my readers:

Ted C: I like Hair and Indian Lake too :)

Larry L My friend Wendy is a huge fan of them. She has been in touch with Susan Cowsill for some time

Wendy.... I'm an Endless, Lifelong Cowsill Fan. -Many tragedies in that family, including Barry and Bill's deaths. -If you are a 'True' fan, check OUT Susan Cowsill Today.... She IS Amazing. Bill Cowsill (who is singing lead on 'Rain, Park and Other Things') died at home on February 18, 2006...just as services were being held for Barry Cowsill: Who died in the midst of Hurricane Katrina.

"I used to play music on my wife's stomach all the time when she was pregnant with Julian," Guinness quoted the father as saying.

Julian has appeared on about 150 television and news shows, including "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "Good Morning America," ''Martha Stewart," ''The Maury Show," ''FOX News Dayside" and "Inside Edition." Next week he is flying out to Los Angeles to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Avengers is the super group to end all supergroups. There are other superhero teams that predate the Avengers such as the Justice Society of America, the JLA, Seven Soldiers of Victory and even the All Winners Squad, but the Avengers have classically maintained a kind of high standard in comicdom. Consisting of the heavy hitters that Marvel Comics debuted with; the Hulk, Giant Man, Thor, Iron Man and the Wasp, the group came into its own after the team discovered Captain America in an ice floe. Enlisting the aid of the sentinel of liberty, the Avengers became a force to be reckoned with.

Seldom have the teammates gotten along off the battlefield as the book embraced the 'heroes with real world problems' concept that Lee found so endearing. Thor wanted Hulk to wear pants, Iron Man drank himself into a stupor, Giant Man suffered from bouts of insanity and the Wasp flirted with everyone she met. Combined with blockbuster battles against time traveling despots, radioactive villains and threats from beneath the surface of the Earth or far outside our galaxy, the Avengers combined their forces and put aside their differences to fight a menace too great to fight on their own.

Over the years, the Avengers has risen to top tier status in comics, so it is only fitting that Marvel Entertainment would capitalize on that success and introduce the movie-going public to the Earth's Mightiest Superhero Team in a big way.

Just recently, fans were given a glimpse of the Avengers film at the end of the Captain America movie (review still forthcoming), but below are several posters that combine to present the entire view of the team as they will appear on the big screen.

The poster series premiered at the 2011 San Diego International Comic Convention and is sure to show up online shortly. It looks amazing and not unlike the fold-out poster by Marko Djurdjevic released last year. Of particular interest to yours truly is the jade giant the Hulk.

Written by Zak Penn, directed by Joss Whedon and starring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, the Avengers movie will premiere May 2012.

Details via MTV's Multiplayer Blog:

Some rumors were milling about the last couple days about a collector's edition for the upcoming "Batman: Arkham City." Well, it turns out the $99 price-point was accurate, and thanks to an announcement from Warner Bros. this morning, we get our first look at the premium package's content. It doesn't include a plastic Batarang, but there's plenty of great stuff inside.

If you're willing to pay the premium cost, the "Batman: Arkham City" collector's edition is packed full of stuff that should please both fans of the videogame franchise and the comics.

First, there's the collectible Batman statue, designed by Japanese toy company Kotobukiya. I wish the image released by Warner Bros. today had a more detailed close-up of the sculpture, but given Kotobukiya's usually high-quality craftsmanship, I'm willing to bet this will look great next to all your other gaming paraphernalia.

The collector's edition also comes with an art book, a copy of the DC animated-film "Batman: Gotham Knight," early access to the Iceberg Lounge Challenge Map, a "Dark Knight Returns" skin, and four collectible cards. Also included is an "Arkham City" album from "hit artists." There's no indication who these "hit artists" are, but it doesn't appear that this is a soundtrack, either. Weird.

The press release this morning also noted that the collector's edition will be available in "limited quantities," so if this is something you're interested in, now may be a good time to visit your favorite retailer. "Batman: Arkham City" releases to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on October 18.

[New post] SDCC2011: Matt Smith on Doctor Who's 50th and Moffat plans a possible spin-off

SDCC2011: Matt Smith on Doctor Who's 50th and Moffat plans a possible spin-off

dailypop | July 24, 2011 at 1:08 pm | Tags: doctor who matt smith moffat rumors | Categories: Doctor Who- 11th Doctor | URL: http://wp.me/p4kUt-2Sx

Who's turning 50?

Matt Smith reigned supreme at a special panel held at the 2011 San Diego International Comic Convention. He had plenty to say about his influences on playing the role of the Doctor, teased some details on series 6 part two and even thew out some teasers regarding Doctor Who's 50th anniversary in 2013.

Matt Smith by http://jimiyo.com/

Via i09:"It was bizarre, really, because nobody had any clue who I was, and David [Tennant] was hugely popular. It was daunting, but I guess it was a good pressure." He expressed his admiration for Tennant and Christopher Eccleston's incarnations of the Doctor, but said that his personal favorite is actually the Second Doctor, played by Patrick Troughton. He aims to bring something of Troughton's Doctor to his version of the character. "What's great is, when you're the Doctor and you walk into a room, you're always the smartest person in the room, which lets you be the stupidest person in the room. It's very liberating for an actor. It lets you do some silly stuff."

He was a bit serious and a bit silly in answering fan questions. When a young lady dressed as a Dalek asked him what color Dalek he would want to be, he replied, "I really like that stone ones [from the episode "The Big Bang"] that have all faded away. But you know, I really like purple – a purple Dalek. But probably a stone one." When another fan asked where and when he would go if he had access to a TARDIS, he said, "There's two: I would go to Atlantis and see if that's just going down. And I'd go see the dinosaurs, but I'd pick up Frank Sinatra on the way."

Smith also revealed his lasting legacy to the series: the Eleventh Doctor's tweed jacket. When one fan asked him whether he had any say in his character's style, Smith answered, "Quite a lot, actually. I had this tweed jacket I used to wear. I actually started in a long leather jacket [when we started filming] – which was a bit awkward – and one day I brought in this tweed jacket. And I couldn't wear it anymore – that's actually where the bowtie came from. And – spoiler alert – in the next episode, I'm wearing a new coat and I get a new hat." Said tweed jacket was likely a far cry from the acid wash denim jacket he wore to the panel.

He says the eighth episode, "Let's Kill Hitler," is his favorite so far. "There's a great monster, which is important." He also teased that there are some great River moments ahead, as well as some great interactions between River and the Doctor.

And when one fan asked if the Eleventh Doctor might encounter Captain Jack Harkness, Smith didn't rule out the possibility. "It's the 50th year coming up, so maybe." He said that he and Steven Moffat have tossed around some ideas for the big anniversary – and suggested that there might be room for some additional Doctors when the time comes.

I find it touching that Smith, an actor too young to have ever seen the original Doctor Who when it was on the air, favors Patrick Troughton's cosmic hobo. While Smith's Doctor is very modern, I can see little influences of the Second Doctor here and there. Regarding wardrobe changes, the dark overcoat has been glimpsed online, but I have no clue what new kind of headgear Smith is referring to. He has already donned a top hat, fez and cowboy hat, what's next?

For fans of the new series, a multi-Doctor story is something of a mythical possibility. Back in 1983, when three of the surviving actors to play the Doctor assembled with actor Richard Hurndall as the First Doctor to play the game of Rassilon in the Five Doctors, it was very special indeed.

Despite two smaller reunions since then, there has yet to be a celebratory event that matches the magnificence of the program's 25th anniversary special.  With Chris Eccleston refusing to return and David Tennant anxious to come back, hopes are high that Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor will finally make an appearance on screen.

The Further Adventures of Madame Vastra and Jenny

In addition to the San Diego Comic Con revelations, Steven Moffat has been happy to reveal a spin-off may be in the works based on his two outlandish characters from this year's mid-series cliffhanger.

Silurian Madame Vastra and... Jenny

Via TV Overmind:

"Obviously the first person to think about a spin-off was me, when I was writing "A Good Man Goes To War," shared executive producer and showrunner Steven Moffat. "A Victorian Silurian? Her lesbian maid? Come on!"

Talking to SFX, Moffat declared that the spinoff had even received an unofficial greenlight from BBC Drama Controller Ben Stephenson. "He just said '...Yes!'. And then I said 'I obviously don't have time to do this..."

That doesn't mean that we'll have to wait to see more of Vastra and Jenny, especially after their reception by fans. "I think I might revisit them," Moffat divulged. "They were great fun to write. . . I was pleased by the reaction to them, but not surprised. They really cut through as characters, given how little screentime they had. I certainly wouldn't be averse to them returning. It's just a thing that worked, isn't it? I love that Victorian setting, and having kicked it out of [his other series, Sherlock, which reimagines the Victorian era detective in a modern setting] I can always kick it in somewhere else!"

I'd personally be up to possibly seeing Vastra and Jenny as companions after the inevitable departure of the Doctor's companions, Rory (Arthur Darvill) and Amy (Karen Gillan), whenever that may be. It wouldn't put such an enormous strain on Moffat's schedule, and we'd get to see more of the duo (though just routine guest appearances would be fine by me as well). In any case, it should be interesting to see just how and when we see these new characters in the future.

Doctor Who will return in the fall with the episode "Let's Kill Hitler."

I'm not a fan of Doctor Who spin offs myself, but Madame Vastra and Jenny are by far the most interesting characters of 'A Good Man Goes to War.' In fact when I reviewed that episode I pointed out that they were practically screaming for more screen time in their own program.

As always, more as it comes...
