eBay watch: 1970s Welltron Model 2002 space age ball radio

Welltron

Yesterday, I was discussing with regular RTG correspondent Andrew the difficulty these days of finding good space age design at a decent (aka cheap) price. A point summed up well by this Welltron Model 2002 space age ball radio.

It's a stunning piece of space age design, playing AM/FM radio in stereo sound from that ball-shaped unit, throwing in some eye-catching sliders and chrome-clad controls. it even has the original magnetic stand included.

Condition is described as 'unrestored' and 'very good above', with only marginal wear from age and of course, it works. It's the kind of thing that would have turned up in junk shops some years back and would have cost a few quid even then. But certainly nothing like the £399 being asked here. Although you can make an offer. See the listing for lots more photos.

Gidget Dress by Rock Steady

Gidgetdress

For those of us who bore the burden a school uniform, we spent our formative years loathing the very mention of the word pinafore (well I did, at least). When it comes to retro fashion, however, it's never a dirty word thanks to fifties and sixties influences.

This Gidget Dress by US retro brand Steady Clothing has a cutesy and kitsch vintage feel, while staying simple and versatile. From their Rock Steady line, the pinafore (or jumper if you're American) is instantly sixties thanks to a high neckline, A-line cut and double breasted button detailing. The combination of a crisp white shirt rounds the dress out neatly.

Get it now from Steady Clothing online for $58.

Just My Type by Simon Garfield

If you share our obsession with typography, then the book "Just My Type" by Simon Garfield is a 'must-read'.

Taken as a whole, the book provides an informative history of printing process, including mentions for retro favourites Letraset transfers and Dymo label makers. There is a chapter about music that includes the Beatles' logo and Amy Winehouse's use of a art deco style fonts, whilst a section on politics looks at how a font contributed to Obama's election campaign, but also goes further back and close to home with information about the typeface favoured during the creation of the NHS. Between the main chapters, there are shorter sections, Font Breaks, which examine the history and use of individual fonts. I would have welcomed more on 60s counterculture design and the Punk aesthetic, about which more could have been said, but all in all, a fascinating read for anyone with an interest in the history of design.

Just My Type is available to buy on Amazon, currently priced just £7.99 for a suitably stylish hardback.

The Heads of State The Great Gatsby Business Card print

If you invested in one of the Penguin Art Deco-style editions of F. Scott Fitzgerald classics, this The Great Gatsy Business Card print from The Heads of State could be the piece of artwork for you.

The print's link to the book is quite subtle. It's inspired by the huge lists of the great and the good and the notorious who attend Gatsy's parties, and illustrates potential business cards of the guests. There's people who work in films and in theatres and other business: all the cards are executed in beautiful period typography, giving a wonderful imagined snapshot of the era.

The print is limited to an edition of 350 and costs $90.

Chill Sofa range at Heal's

Chillsofa_mMore mid-century style courtesy of the high street, this time the Chill Sofa range at Heal's

With its straight lines and boxy shape, it's got something of the look of the Florence Knoll sofa. This sofa is given a leather finish, including the luxurious sounding 'Suede soft' leather option. With a soft back, seat and arm cushions, it sounds like this is a design that will be comfortable as well as looking good. The look is finished off by the dark-stained wooden legs.

The version of the sofa pictured costs £2995 or you can buy a smaller version for £2595.

Berkeley Dressing Table

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 01:57 AM PST

Berkeley
Dressing tables always suggest a more glamorous time than ours (possibly because I don't have space for one myself) and this is especially true of the Berkeley Dressing Table from Hyde House.

With its over-sized mirror , framed in black and white, the Berkeley Dressing Table has looks that hark back to the art deco period, although as photographed here against a monochrome striped background, it would work equally well in a 1960s-inspired room.

The dressing table set costs £1,299. Visit the Hyde House website to order.
