San Diego Comic Con news- preview night

Last night was preview night and the San Diego Comic Con is already in full swing.

The anime version of Supernatural looks to deliver the same high quality of stories with more gore and action than can be shown on TV.

JJ Abrams' Persons of Interest starring Jim Caviezel, Kevin Chapman, Michael Emerson and Taraji P. Henson was a big hit with viewers. "Person of Interest is a crime drama centered on an ex-CIA agent played by James Caviezel (The Prisoner). Presumed dead, he teams up with a mysterious billionaire (Lost's Michael Emerson) to prevent violent crimes in New York City."

Early reaction to JJ Abrams' Alcatraz is extremely positive, boasting that it is the 'new Lost.'

When San Francisco Police Department DET. REBECCA MADSEN (Sarah Jones, "Sons of Anarchy") is assigned to a grisly homicide case, a fingerprint leads her to a shocking suspect: JACK SYLVANE (guest star Jeffrey Pierce, "The Nine"), a former Alcatraz inmate who died decades ago. Given her family history – both her grandfather and surrogate uncle, RAY ARCHER (Robert Forster, "Jackie Brown"), were guards at the prison – Madsen's interest is immediately piqued, and once the enigmatic, knows-everything-but-tells-nothing government agent EMERSON HAUSER (Sam Neill, "Jurassic Park") tries to impede her investigation, she's doggedly committed. Madsen turns to Alcatraz expert and comic book enthusiast, DR. DIEGO "DOC" SOTO (Jorge Garcia, "Lost"), to piece together the inexplicable sequence of events.

But what about the big sci-fi and comic book movies of 2012? Batman, Superman and the Avengers are mostly absent, but this morning Cinema Blend has plenty of images from the San Diego International Comic Con floor. The rumor was that there would be a pull back from promoting motion pictures, but from the gallery below it looks like there's a wealth of new movies on display.

Eagle eyed readers will notice a plethora of promotion for the upcoming Ghost Rider sequel, Spirits of Vengeance, the first in a trilogy of Hunger Games adaptations, a Spider-Man-aquin and more.

Check it out!

The exhibit hall has officially opened for Preview Night of Comic Con 2011, which means we've gotten our first look at the booths and exclusives set up by various movie studios and TV networks. Of course the exhibition hall is huge, featuring everything from life-size C3PO replicas to-- gasp!-- actual comic books. But we're a movie and TV site, so we went through the exhibition floor with a laser-like focus on all the movie and TV exclusives, which ranged from the new bike featured in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance to an exact replica of the mockingjay pin worn by Katniss in The Hunger Games (Katey will be sporting that one around San Diego if you happen to see her). In the picture of the bike below it says MIB3 behind it, but we have it on good authority that the bike belongs to Johnny Blaze, not Will Smith. Sony was promoting Men In Black 3 as well-- you can also see a picture of the neuralizer from the movie in the gallery.

Take a look at our initial gallery below, and keep coming back as we add more of the sights and sounds of Comic Con Preview Night.

[New post] Blake's 7 liberated once more?

Blake's 7 liberated once more?

After creating the Daleks for Doctor Who, Terry Nation crafted what could be the greatest TV science fiction series ever, Blake's 7. Set in a future where a galactic Federation holds the population of Earth in a drug-induced stupor, the program followed the exploits of a revolutionary rebel group tearing down the system of control. Sadly, Blake's 7 is all but unknown in the US due to the fact that it was rarely shown on TV and rights issues are still preventing a DVD release in our region. The program is somewhat dated and showcases several fashion disasters that often make it look like a second cousin to Doctor Who, but it remains a cult favorite and one of the best sci-fi TV programs I have ever seen.

Since its 4 year run ended, there have been numerous attempts to revive the concept either as a continuation or as a complete do-over. Most recently Big Finish assembled a strong cast in retelling several of the iconic Blake's 7 adventures via their audio series (highly recommended). Starring Derek Riddell as Blake and Colin Salmon as Kerr Avon, the series was very well done, modernized just enough to make it interesting and new without insulting the source material. There were plans to develop the program for TV which had many fans excited, but they all fell apart when SKY1 dropped the option.

However, there is finally news that should excite fans of the rebellion as Big Finish has received clearance to produce entirely new stories starring Nation's characters, this time starring the original cast.

Via PopCultureZoo

My second favorite British science-fiction series (regular readers will be able to instantly guess the first), Blake's 7, is returning with its original actors! And the company bringing back this groundbreaking series is the one and only Big Finish Productions. Big Finish has been producing Doctor Who audio plays since 1999 and has, in recent years, also branched out to include the Stargateuniverse, HighlanderDark Shadows and Sapphire and Steele as well as many other licensed and original productions. No word yet on when this stories take place in the series continuity and exactly which actors will be involved, but we will certainly bring you that information as soon as we hear about it. For now, here are all the details, straight from Big Finish's website, along with links to pre-order:

Big Finish Productions is thrilled to announce that it has signed a licence deal with B7 Enterprises to produce original audiobooks and novels based on Terry Nation's popular science fiction series Blake's 7.

Blake's 7: The Liberator Chronicles will be launching in Spring 2012 on CD and download, and will be performed by the original stars of the TV series. Each box set will contain three discs, with each disc comprising a separate adventure performed by two of the show's stars. There will be two box set releases each year.

The Blake's 7 original novels will be released in hardback editions, each of approximately 60,000 words. There will be two novels per year – thus ensuring there's a new Blake's 7 release every three months!

Jason Haigh-Ellery, executive producer of Big Finish, says: "As a huge fan of Blake's 7, it is a series that I have always wanted Big Finish to be involved with – and now we have the chance due to a ground breaking agreement with B7 Enterprises. It's something that Andrew Mark Sewell and I have been discussing for several years and I am so pleased that we have come to an agreement."

Nicholas Briggs, executive producer adds: "Blake's 7 is something our listeners have been asking us to produce for ages, so I'm so pleased that we're finally delivering!"

Andrew Mark Sewell, managing director of B7 Enterprises says: "We've long been an admirer of the audio dramas produced by Big Finish and are delighted that they will be lending their considerable talents to recapturing the spirit of the classic Blake's 7 series with a series of new novels and audio plays. Even though thirty years has passed since the original television series ended, we're sure that these new novels and audio stories will recapture the magic of Terry Nation's original creation and reignite people's passion for this seminal show."

The audio series will be produced by David Richardson, while Xanna Eve Chown is books editor.

"I have two loves in science fiction," says David, "and they are Doctor Who and Blake's 7. And now I get to produce both on audio! I couldn't be happier."

"The Liberator Chronicles will be a series of exciting, character-driven tales that remain true to the original TV series. We're aiming for authenticity – recreating the wonder of 1978 all over again!"

Blake's 7: The Liberator Chronicles launches in February 2012 and is available for pre-order at bigfinish.com.

Blake's 7: The Novels launch in May 2012 and are available for pre-order at bigfinish.com.

A year-long subscription offer to the Blake's 7 range is also available.

If you're fortunate enough to find yourself in Rhode Island, Masachusetts between now and July 31st you'll be able to visit Cocktail Culture: Ritual and Invention in American Fashion, 1920-1980; a fabulous exhibition exploring "the social ritual of the cocktail hour through the lens of fashion and design."

Dating back to the 1930's, cocktail garb was a good deal more functional than eveningwear and marked the advent of the more modern woman who drank socially. Fashion from designers including Balenciaga and Schiaparelli features in this exhibition alongside jewellery, accessories and photographs.

If you can't make it all the way there you can always buy the book which is fully illustrated and includes five essays on the visual culture of the cocktail party

Find out more and and buy the book, which costs $30 here.

Vintage Book Clocks

The Etsy seller by the name of SteampunksNotDead specialises in Vintage Book Clocks.

Each clock is a one of a kind piece and is made from a book usually dating from between 1890 and 1960. Most of the book clocks currently available use obscure titles (The Scarlett Letter was the only one I recognised), but I think they are all the better for it. Various styles of clock hands are available so you can request a certain style. Equally, if you have a book that you would like transformed into a clock, then they are happy to quote for doing that. Prices range from around £16 to just under £100 depending on the size and rarity of the book.

Visit the SteampunksNotDead shop on Etsy for more information.

Porada Oscar Trolley

Porada_oscar_425a
A trolley was very much a "must-have" item for any self-respecting host back in the 1970s and I don't see any reason why today's homes should be without.

The Porada Oscar Trolley is a great option as it has some retro features, but still looks sleek and stylish. The shelves all have rounded edges with the top shelf being cut away to allow bottles to stand on the middle shelf. It is available in a number of different finishes, but the walnut and chrome combination pictured here is arguably the most stylish.

Buy it from Mac and Mac Interiors, priced £841.

eBay watch: 1970 Volvo P1800 E sports car

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 07:26 AM PDT

Volvo

If you are a fan of the cult 1960s show The Saint, you'll recognise the car immediately, as Simon Templar, played by Roger Moore drove a similar (but slightly earlier) one. Now you can get your hands on a 1970 Volvo P1800 E sports car, crime fighter or not.

Apparently Moore loved the car so much, he bought one for his own personal use. You can see why. This one is the 'E' model (a fuel-injected version and the first with four-wheel disc brakes), which has apparently done 57,039 on that 1,986cc engine amongst six previous owners.

The current owner said 'no expense spared' when it has come to upkeep - see the listing for all the additions and upgrades, right down to a CD player and high-end sound system. See also the listing for many more images of what looks like an impressive example of an all-time and fairly practical classic. Bidding right now is at £1,800.

Bird Print Jacket from Miss Selfridge

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 06:55 AM PDT

Birdprintjacket

Tropical style prints, from birds to florals, are most often used to conjure up a fifties style in retro fashion. With just a subtle difference, however, the styling can speak to an entirely different era and aesthetic. This Bird Print Jacket from Miss Selfridge takes its inspiration from a sultry seventies look.

The jacket's flowing fit, with billowing sleeves and a waist-fastening front, helps to create an instant seventies look, with the movement of draped fabric achieving a striking silhouette. The use of ombre pastel shades as a backdrop for the exotic print adds some post-sixties modernity, giving you the option of carrying this item through to an early eighties wardrobe too.

It's available from Miss Selfridge for £40.

Heartshift

Simplicity and chic are the quickest route to effortless mid-sixties looks from any garment, making a well crafted shift dress the choice that the high street continually revisit for retro fare. This Peter Pan Shift Dress from New Look is a subtly styled dress with evident vintage influence throughout.

Perfect for the Summer, the loose and light fit of the shift dress helps create that androgynous silhouette much loved in that era. The addition of a bell cuffed sleeve and peter pan collar adds some unmistakeable retro feel, while the mustard heart print rounds out the sixties influence.

It's now available from New Look for £27.99.

Green-stripy-paper-straws
Sometimes it's the smallest details which make the difference and these Stripy Paper Straws from Pipli do just that, adding a dash of vintage flavour to tableware for summer weddings, picnics and parties.

Paper straws in pastel shades have a retro feel that plastic just can't match. Add to milkshakes for a fifties diner feel or give that Long Island Iced Tea the appearance of something far more innocent.

The straws are available in a range of designs including red, blue, grey and yellow stripes. A pack of 25 costs £2.65. They are 100% biodegradeable and compostable, so eco-friendly too.

Rochelle Task lamp from John Lewis

Rochelle

Another great retro styled light available on the high street - this time it's John Lewis' turn with their Rochelle Task lamp.

The task lamp title gives a clue to its style - it goes for an industrial feel with a painted metal base and shade. The cord fabric has been wrapped to complete the retro look. It's also available in a range of bright colours: choose from orange, green, blue or the red version pictured.

The lamp costs £35.
