JOHNNY MORGAN AND JOHNNY THUNDERS!

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 05:44 PM PDT

Scott (Morgan) and I went out to Gary Burmele's house on Dexter Rd. one night where Johnny and his family were staying. It was just Scott, Johnny, and I and we were sitting around just hanging out shooting the shit. Johnny had on a pink velour shirt. The kind with the zipper turtle neck that were popular in the 60's and black pants.

Johnny loved pink and black together. I had my drum riser done up with pink carpet and black trim for him for our second chance show. Any way, Scott and I are talking to him in the living room and the lights are real low almost non existent, it was winter.

Johnny says to me "Why don't you have Scott join our band?" I said " He's got a band, he's in Sonic's Rendezvous Band" Scott said "yeah I'm already in a band, I'm in Sonic's"

This was shortly after Johnny and Julie Jordan, his wife, had heard "I Need You" on HONEY radio, an oldies station on am radio out of Detroit. They were blown away by Scott's voice and the song. Julie said she wanted to cry after hearing it because it had moved her so much.

So after Johnny asked Scott to join Gang War, he went over to play some songs on his entertainment center and played his Les Paul Jr. along with it on his amplifier which is how he learned to play songs.

The song he played along with was "Suspicion" by Elvis. Not the Terry Stafford one you always hear but Elvis' version which we had never heard before.

After that Scott said "Well lets get going". On the way home he said to me "I wonder where he got that version of Suspicion?" JOHN MORGAN....

Master 6 degree black belt Charles Rice Jr

I had a great time tonight chatting on the phone with Karate Master student teacher/6th degree black belt Charles Rice Jr from Detroit, Michigan. Charles has been involved in karate since he was 9 years old. What a guy!! Loved him....

Charles is a 6th degree black belt and he used to be a safety patrol on Detroit's north end near John R. Charles used to get chased home every day from school. Once he began obtaining belts in karate Charles never ran from anyone again....

Charles quit going to clubs as well. He is a great dancer and the girls would surround him and cause the other men to try and fight him.... Charles never looks for a fight but never runs from one either... After all he is from DETROIT!

Charles is raising funds by selling peach cobbler and taking donations to get the team to Spain for the WKC World Championships. I will have info soon on where you can donate money to help Charles and his karate kids and get fabulous peach cobbler too....

DENIZ TEK AND THE CONTINENTAL CLUB 2010

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 02:25 PM PDT

The Continental Club started up in 1957 in Austin and featured swing jazz like Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. In the 60's it became a burlesque club and was home to exotic dancers Candy Barr, "Bubbles" Cash, and more. History of the Continental Club

By the 70's the Continental Club began to host rock music. When the Satellite Lounge in Houston closed down they moved the operation to the current midtown location and started it up as a second Continental Club.

Across the street is Sig's Lagoon, a record store featuring the explosion of new vinyl records coming out these days, rare used vinyl, as well as retro and pop cultural artifacts and all kinds of cool stuff.

The band that backed me up was Love Street, who are master players and session cats at Sugar Hill. I've recorded with them before, including a wild version of You're Gonna Miss Me. Here was the line-up.

Guitar: Deniz Tek
Guitar: Kenny Cordray
Bass: Mark Andes
Keyboards: Paul English
Drums: Tyson Sheff

The Beetles, a Beatles tribute band, played first to a packed cheering house, most of whom departed the club when they finished their set around ten o'clock. They had their vocal parts down and from the back room actually did sound like the Beatles. We went on I think around 11.

First up Love Street did an original tune Under the Rainbow and the Peter Green classic Green Manalishi. Next up, I joined the band on stage and plugged in to the Mark3 Mesa Boogie combo amp, which I'd borrowed from Dan Workman at the studio. First two numbers were Tomas Escalante singing the Spirit tune "Got A Line On You". I've always loved that song and it was a kick toplay it hard with the original Spirit bass player Mark Andes.

Deniz Tek starts at 33:52

We picked up an instant connection and the song fired. It set the tone for a great set to follow. Tomas then sang the 1968 Fever Tree classic "San Francisco Girls"before leaving the stage to wild applause. Then we played my set, which was a mix of solo stuff and a couple of Radio Birdman tunes.

After the set, we hung out for a while. I had a few $4.50 G and T's from the bar, talked to some really nice people, and generally enjoyed a great evening of music. There are not many cool places like the Continental Club and Sid's Lagoon left. We need to support 'em. Staying home and watching movies is not an excuse!

Chicago-based blogger G. Brett Williams is looking for support for a project that will explore the myth and reality of Batman as he embarks on a mission to discover his inner dark knight detective. The concept is bizarre and fascinating. I am curious to see not just his experiences as he learns the various skills needed to be Batman but the reactions to people that he meets on his journey.

The Many Faces of Batman

This Batman Life is the story of one nerd's journey to see the country the way a young Bruce Wayne might have seen it. Equal parts travelogue and documentary, this project follows writer G. Brett Williams as he attempts to learn to be The Batman, and hopefully learn a thing or two about himself along the way.

Throughout this project, Brett will travel to some of the most vibrant cities in the country, including Chicago and New York City, as he attempts to learn everything Bruce Wayne had to learn to be the Batman. This Batman Life isn't simple hero worship, nor the desire for vigilantism. Instead, it is a journey through the heart of America and the heart of a man, as he seeks to better himself and to support the communities through which he travels. Brett will learn the skills provided by martial arts and Eastern philosophy, glean the secrets of detective work from a real private eye, dart across rooftops with professional Parkour practitioners and learn to live off the land from tried and true survival experts.

One part On the Road and one part Batman: Year One, this project combines the time honored American traditions of the open road novel and superhero comic book. Come along for this exciting and illuminating journey as one aging nerd decides to live, This Batman Life.

G. Brett Williams is a blogger and aspiring comic book writer living in Chicago, IL. He has contributed to various pop culture websites including Broken Frontier and CC2K and keeps his own blog for aiding other young creators looking to break into the comic book industry. His latest work, an essay on Warren Ellis's Transmetropolitan, will appear in Sequart's upcoming book, Shot In The Face.

For sale: New apartments in the 1930s art deco Manor Road Garage, East Preston, West Sussex

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Manor1

It might not look much now, but the 1930s art deco Manor Road Garage, East Preston, West Sussex will soon be apartments, with reservations now being taken.

An icon of a bygone age, the Manor Road Garage and its four petrol pumps picked up grade II listing status back in 2007, but was actually given the art deco look around 1934 and continued as a working garage until 1973, before being left to die. Until the developers moved in.

Manor2

The agents are offering the building as apartments, with an artist's impression now being shown off. The building will retain the Grade II listed facade, refurbished the pumps with their glass domes and many other period features. But beyond that, you'll find both the single and two storey 'luxury' properties with  two bedrooms, private terraces, landscaped communal gardens and private parking.

Manor3

The finished apartments are said to be ready in July, with reservations being taken now. You can contact the agent for a brochure, with the ones online at present starting at £225,000, moving up to £310,000. Ideal if you fancy a mix of old and new, not to mention some quiet seaside living.

Velvet Trim Jacket from Topshop

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 10:15 AM PDT

Bouclejacket

Though the 1960s may be fondly remember as a decade that made waves in fashion, it wasn't just the youth market offering up iconic pieces. Thanks to the big name brands like Chanel, a decidedly more prim and chic style pervaded too, making this Velvet Trim Jacket from Topshop a nice take on a more grown up 60s look.

The jacket's cut may not be quite a refined as the inspiration, but with the combination of cobalt blue and rich velt trim throughout there's an undeniable hint of the style. The peter pan collar is the ideal finish to create a piece with a timeless quality.

It's available now from Topshop for £65.

Crepejumpsuit

This year's seventies trend in mainstream fashion has given the jumpsuit a definite rebirth. While many have missed the mark for retro lovers, there's still plenty of pieces that channel vintage inspiration with great style. This Printed Crepe Jumpsuit from Oasis is one such piece, with an instant, easy retro feel.

The cut of this jumpsuit creates a chic silhouette, lengthening the body with long wide-legged trousers and a high neckline. The use of ruffled sleeves and a belted waist ensure there's no loss of femininity, while the all over print manages to be charming without going over the top.

It's now available from Oasis for £75.

Typhoon Novo Bread Bin

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 04:42 AM PDT

000263928 If you hanker after a retro styled kitchen you could do a lot worse that start off with this Typhoon Novo Bread Bin from John Lewis.

It's glossy enamel finish and chrome legs and handle give it a definite mid-century flavour. Not only does it look the part but it's capacious interior will easily accomodate your loaf, with space left over for any other baked goods you need to store - crumpet anyone? The door has a magnetic catch too, so no risk of leaving it ajar.

The breadbin comes in either red or cream and costs £60 from John Lewis here.

eBay watch: 1960s Metamec Sunray wall clock

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 01:38 AM PDT

Meta

Big thanks to Andrew Graham once more for spotting this very distinctive 1960s Metamec Sunray wall clock, with a very low price only adding to the appeal.

Made in England and from 1967, it actually looks older - there's a touch of the art nouveau about those 'rays' for sure. Either way, it's a great focal point in a room. According to the seller, the this has been 'thoroughly cleaned and restored' to its former glory, with the original convex glass unmarked and the sunray segments outside undamaged. The mechanism works fine too, you'll just need a single battery to keep it going.

The only flaw is some of the gold 'gold' on those sunrays (only in small areas) has worn, but you can see from the photos that it doesn't have much of an impact. Anyway, with a current price of just 99 pence, it's hardly something to worry about.

Hector Bibendum table lamp designed by Terence Conran

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 01:20 AM PDT

Hector

The Terence Conran-designed Hector Bibendum table lamp offers an update on a familar shape.

This object celebrates not one, but two separate anniversaries. There's 21 years of the Original BTC Hector lamp, as well as the centenary of Michelin House which we mentioned earlier in the year. The Conran Shop was one of the first companies to stock Original BTC lighting and, to tie the two together, the bone china shade of the classic Hector lamp has been modified to reflect the well-known curves of the Michelin Man. The lamp is finished off with a contrasting coloured cable: pick from red or blue.

The lamp costs £149.

Float sofa by Parlour Furniture

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 01:20 AM PDT

Parlour sofa
If you are looking for some seating both with some retro stylings and made with true love and attention, perhaps the Float sofa by Parlour Furniture is worthy of a place in your living room.

Parlour Furniture is the company of British maker Garry Smith. He specialises in working with wood, and this sofa is made from walnut. Combine that with the grey wool fabric and you've got a design that echoes the mid-century Scandinavian styles that are so popular at the moment. There's a nice unique twist to the look though: it's got clear acrylic feet that help create the floating appearance that inspired its name.

How much? Well, you'll have worked out that it's not an off-the-peg design and the price reflects that. It costs £1600.

Buy it from Rockett St George

Tom Dixon Fan Chair

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 01:19 AM PDT

Fanchair
The Fan Chair is Tom Dixon's take on the classic Windsor chair.

Its high backed 'fan' is created using spindles of wood that have been bent to form the distinctive slatted silhouette. Pictured here is the chair with in a lacquered ash finish, but if you want something that moves a little further away from the classic look, then the indigo stained ash option might be of interest instead.

The chair costs £1,200 from Heal's, although it is a special order item with a 3 to 5 week lead time.

Convivo Fondue Set

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 01:19 AM PDT

LEGLA32_1_Zoom
The fondue set is the quintessential retro food accessory and it's been a little while since we last featured one. The Convivo Fondue Set is part of Legnoart's Classic range and is really a premium example.

Rather than the usual cheese or chocolate options, this is a bourguignonne fongue set, which means it is designed for serving little pieces of meat. It consists of six cups and six forks, presented on a bamboo base, which adds to its retro look.

One for the real fondue fanatic, it costs £175 from Ecklee.
