TED'S CAMPUS DRUGS OWNER PASSED AWAY

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 08:32 PM PST

Ted Tangalakis 1916-2011

One of my favorite people I have ever met passed away this past week, Ted Tangalakis. None of us kids knew Ted's last name. We just called him Ted. He was the owner of a very cool retro style drugstore located right behind my grandmother's home in Ypsilanti.

Ted's Campus Drugs

Ted's store was not large but it was crammed full of the coolest stuff! He had an old fashioned style soda fountain. We spent all our allowance money there on cherry cokes and ice cream. We would sit in those wooden booths at Ted's, have a sundae and chatter away with Ted. We loved him so.

Ted's Store on Cross St. at Normal Ypsilanti, MI

My favorite area of his drug store was just inside and behind the door to the right. This was the magazine and book stand. He carried my favorite reading materials in the early 60's. Mad Magazine, Archie Comics and Peanuts/Snoopy paperback books were my passion in elementary school.

My grandmother's home behind Ted's

My grandmother Dorothy Stinson was a good friend of Ted's and they were very similar people. Kids loved them both so much. All the kids in the neighborhood knew Ted and my grandmother they called "Nanna".

Ted lived a very long life and helped countless people that were lucky enough to meet this man. He was so kind and jovial. You know, he always got our names right! All these kids and yet Ted always called us by our correct name. Who knows your name now in any store?

The front of Ted's campus club he owned on Cross St.

Ted opened a cool bar on campus for the students called Theos. It was a fun place and tons of kids hung out there. Ted made a huge impression on me of the proper way to do business and how to be a friend to all. RIP Ted and thanks so much for all the kindness you showed so many... xxoo

Theodore G. Tangalakis, 94, business and community leader and long time resident of Ann Arbor, known to many simply as "Ted", passed away on January 13, 2011. He was born in Blissfield, MI, the son of George and Kaliope (Karabatsos) Tangalakis on April 1, 1916 and grew up in Saint Louis, MI.

Obituary

Ted served as a Captain with the U.S. Army Medical Corps during WWII in the European Theater from 1942 to 1945. He served in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central European campaigns and was attached to General Patton's division during the Battle of the Bulge. Distinguishing himself there, he was awarded the Soldier's Medal by General Patton for saving wounded men from a MASH unit hospital tent set ablaze by enemy fire.

At great danger and personal risk, he repeatedly entered the blazing hospital to save wounded soldiers, carrying them out to safety. It was an act of bravery that he simply considered to be his duty to his fellow man. Ted was the first American medical officer to enter and liberate the infamous Bergen-Belsen concentration camp toward the end of the war, giving aid to victims of the Holocaust - an event which affected him deeply and which helped to mold his life-long commitment to helping people. DETROIT'S KILLER ARTIST: NIAGARA

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 01:34 PM PST

Niagara Detroit is one dangerous woman. Brains, endless beauty and talent, always a dangerous combination... Niagara defies all categories. Fascinating to watch on stage or sitting at the rail in a corner bar. It is impossible to ignore this woman. Niagara causes a scene where ever she goes.

When I first met her at a gig we did last year at The Blind Pig, I witnessed her magic in person. From the second she walked in the door the room lit up. Buzz began to spread and people rushed over to let me know she had arrived...

It was exciting to finally see Niagara in person. I wanted to meet her, I wanted her autograph and most of all I want to shoot photos for my blog.

Dennis Thompson and Niagara

Most of my readers know that I have met tons of my favorite rock icons of late. They have followed my travels with Dennis Thompson, Stanley The Madhatter, and other companions. But what I never disclosed is how nervous I was meeting Niagara. Dumbstruck and wordless aptly describes that moment.

My photo at the Blind Pig

Since that meeting I began a folder saving photographs of this artist and I thought it would be fun to share a slideshow of Niagara. She is one of the most unique and undefinable women I have ever encountered. Not to mention how much I love her art and her stage persona. Niagara and I share a love for our favorite pets. We also have quite a few friends in common.

Her husband Colonel Galaxy kindly sent me some cool recent photos of Niagara on tour in Australia with Chris Klondike Masuak and the Hitmen. Finally this Christmas I received the Veronica Lake giclee from Heather Harris and love it so much! I am a huge Niagara fan!

Theatre_lamp

Once a functional object for stage and screen, this Strand Patt 123 theatre lamp is now ideal for an interesting retro feature in your home.

According to the seller, the Patt 123 was first used in 1957 in stage and studio work, with this particular model professionally polished and rewired to take modern domestic bulbs, as well as being mounted on a tripod stand which rotates 360 degrees. Check out some of the detail shots on the seller's page - the full-length images don't perhaps do it justice.

Still a good few days to go with it, £5.50 is the current price.

Cherry Print Dress by Dolce & Gabbana

Cherrydg

Cherry prints have become one of a few fabric choices that go hand in hand with retro fashion nowadays. Most often appearing in fifties styles, Dolce & Gabbana have taken the print forward to a sixties look with this Cherry Print Shift Dress.

The shift is kept classic in silhouette and cut, allowing for an all over print to look chic and stylish. With a high neckline countering the mini hem and sleeveless look, the shift flatters the figure without looking too tight or trashy to be truly sixties inspired.

It's available online in the UK from Matches Fashion for £320.

Green Lady print by Miss Swanne

This isn't the first Tretchikoff-inspired piece we've featured of late but with the original print becoming harder to find at a realistic price, the wave of contemporary interpretations is set to continue.

With the Green Lady print, illustrator Miss Swanne has saturated the more muted hues from Tretchikoff's famous 1950 'Chinese Girl' painting, giving the piece a pleasing pop art revamp.

The Green Lady print is A3 size and is £95 from Boxbird gallery website.

Graham and Green Pineapple Lamp Base

Screen shot 2011-01-16 at 22.04.27

No home with kitsch ambitions can be without an ornamental pineapple of some sort. Ever since Columbus bought them back from the West Indies, the pineapple has been a symbol of all things exotic and the luxurious Polynesian-themed tiki bars that popped up all over the US during the 1930s wouldn't be the same without being adorned by the fruit.

This Pineapple lamp base from Graham and Green in antiqued silver is stylish modern take on the mid 20th century tiki exotica trend, meaning you can save the real pineapples for garnishing all those rum drinks.

The lamp is £95 from Graham & Green. Find out more from the website.

Circa Coffee Table from Dwell

Circa table
Another new design from Dwell's latest collection, the Circa coffee table.

A few designer lookalikes aside, Dwell's furniture collection often focuses on a high gloss look - indeed, it mostly crops up here through space age style designs. This table is a change from its usual look with its simple shape, sloping legs and walnut veneer giving it more of a mid-century feel. There's also a dining table with a similar look that's due in towards the end of the month.

The table is due in stock today and costs £249.

Chelsea Girls print by Siggi Eggertsson

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 04:40 AM PST

Chelsea1

The original poster was a piece of iconic 60s design but Chelsea Girls gets a new look courtesy of this print by Siggi Eggertsson.

Andy Warhol's 1966 film is often remembered more for its poster by Alan Aldridge than for the film itself, which followed some of the residents in New York's Chelsea Hotel. That cast included Nico and the film then inspired her debut album the following year. Probably because of that, Nico is the star of this poster, depicted in a bright and colourful manner that reflects the Pop art associated with Warhol. Add to that some other nice details too - such as the cast list worked into the main design - and you've got a nice piece of original art work for your walls.

The giclee print is available in two sizes at two prices: either A2 for £85 or 60cm x 84cm for £145.

How to Shoot a Rock Star with Mick Rock

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 02:01 AM PST

Mickrock
You may recall that back in November we mentioned the Mick Rock photography exhibition at the Idea Generation Gallery. That exhibition is finishing this week, but it is ending with a very special event. On Wednesday 19th January, Mick Rock will present How to Shoot a Rock Star, where he will impart his wisdom on the topic of portrait photography in his own inimitable style.

After the demonstration, Mick will be auctioning ten of the exhibition prints. But that's not all –there is also a competition running offering the chance for one lucky winner to be the subject of Mick's photography, an honour you'll share with the likes of David Bowie, Syd Barrett and Blondie.

The event is free, starting at 6.30 (doors from 6.00). Further information, including how you can enter the competition, can be found on the Idea Generation Gallery website.

Nextime Disco Clock

Nextime-disco-clock3
It seems disco might be the next big trend in retro interiors as just after featuring Urban Outfitters Rotating Disco Mirror Ball last week, I spotted this Disco Clock by Nextime.

The clock is covered is made up of hundreds of tiny square mirrored tiles with clock hands in black to provide enough contrast to make it easy to tell the time from. Whereas the mirror ball we featured last week was of small proportions, this piece is true to the size of a real disco ball, measuring an impressive 43 centimetres in diameter.

The clock is available to buy from Red Candy, priced £31.50.
