RETRO KIMMER: IGGY AND THE STOOGES IN ANN ARBOR

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 10:04 AM PDT

Iggy and the Stooges in Ann Arbor's Michigan Theater

Ann Arbor has been buzzing for over a week waiting for Iggy and The Stooges to finally appear in Iggy's hometown. The fans were busy trying to find tickets as they were sold out so fast... Scalpers were having a field day.

Luckily for me, My photographer friend Heather Harris hooked me up with two really fantstic seats. I was far enough back to miss getting splashed with Iggy's always present bottle of water.

\\
Iggy and my pal Deniz Tek

The Stooges played 2 sets. First part was the Normal lineup. The second brought out Deniz Tek to play earlier Ron Asheton driven Stooges songs. Deniz played Ron Asheton's guitar! How amazing! Lots of folks were talking about Deniz's playing as if he were "possessed" by the spirit of Ron Asheton. Deniz played like himself to me. But, I have had the great fortunate to have seen him play before and at very close range.

Iggy Pop

This is the first time I have seen this band since 1970 I think. To me Iggy seemed very happy to be home and embraced that packed audience. Iggy was impishly warm and funny. Hi voice was fantastic and well the energy was just over the top. How does that man keep up that pace?

Retro: Kimmer and Rikki St James

Heather shot this cool photo of Rik and I outside Monday's sound check at the Theater. We had so much fun at this show! I have not met Iggy but I felt like I knew him.

Huge crowd going into the theater Photo: Richard Blondy

James Williamson and Steve Mackay

It was just really powerful to finally see James Williamson play live. I was going to go to his Ann Arbor meet and greet party but I was out of town working. Hopefully I will meet James eventually. Steve Mackay was unbelievable! The entire band was off the chart... Scott Asheton tore that kit up all night. If anyone has a good shot of Scott to share plz email it to me ok?

Mike Watt

Mike Watt was a total surprise for me. He is the most energetic joy filled bass player I have ever seen live. He was just so happy! Made me smile watching him enjoy playing music.

Guitarist Deniz Tek with Photographer Anne Laurent

Great Richard Blondy shot of Deniz Tek at the after party. Deniz wrote me that he was still on a "high" even the next day. He said he didn't sleep that night. Very exciting historical moment watching Deniz work his magic on 4 songs. Deniz was very close friends with Ron Asheton so this Memorial was very dear to his heart.

Wendy Mastal and Meridith Lorde with Iggy

My darling Motor City Rah Rah Wendy Starz (Mastal) was onstage dancing with Iggy when I walked in and saw her up there! turned out Wendy and her friend Jake had the seats to my right! YES we had a blast together and it was so sweet to be next to you buddies at such a huge gig!

I'd like to thank all my readers and friends who helped with this event/story. Heather Harris, Richard Blondy, RSJ, Natalie Schlossman, Deniz Tek, Scott Morgan and The Stooges for coming out to A2! Most of all thanks go to Ron Asheton for the great music. XXOOK

Marvel Entertainment backs S.H.I.E.L.D.

dailypop | April 21, 2011 at 8:55 pm | Tags: S.H.I.E.L.D. marvel avengers, sam jackson | Categories: Marvel | URL: http://wp.me/p4kUt-2xc

A year ago the story broke that Jackson had signed a nine-picture deal to star as S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury. This would include Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Avengers and other cameos in addition to a solo film based on the organization S.H.I.E.L.D. Based on the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby creation, Nick Fury is a hard-boiled, cigar-chomping, gun-toting super spy dropping into dangerous situations with high-tech devices and a devil-may-care attitude.

As the Thor and Captain America sequels are now gaining press again, news of a S.H.I.E.L.D. feature film comes via Spinoff:

It's no surprise that Marvel is planning sequels to Thor and Captain America following the release next year of The Avengers, or that characters like Black Widow and Hawkeye (and Iron Fist and Doctor Strange, for that matter) are being eyed for solo projects. However, it may be news that the studio envisions S.H.I.E.L.D. headlining its own movie.

The word comes courtesy of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige in the latest issue of Disney twenty-three, the quarterly publication of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club (via IGN).

Following The Avengers, which premieres on May 4, 2012, Feige says, "Thor will go off into a new adventure, and Captain America will continue to explore the modern world in another film of his own. We hope that holds true for the characters appearing in that film — Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the spy organization, S.H.I.E.L.D. — all of whom are more than worthy and capable of carrying their own films. And, we've got a lot of other characters we're prepping and getting ready for film debuts: the world of martial arts, these great cosmic space fantasies, Dr. Strange, and the magic side of the Marvel Universe. There are many, many stories to be mined."

It should be noted that Feige's comment about the Captain America sequel indicates that the story's setting may not be as up in the air as screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus had suggested. Instead of a further exploration of the Sentinel of Liberty's World War II adventures, it looks as if we'll see Steve Rogers in the modern Marvel Universe. (Maybe there's still hope for that Winter Soldier storyline?)

But to the matter at hand, a movie centering on S.H.I.E.L.D. seems almost inevitable when you consider the casting of the charismatic Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, the popularity and expanding role of Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, the addition of Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, the use of the fictional agency as a marketing tool and the increased presence of the spy organization in Thor (in which operatives all drive Honda Acuras). So perhaps a spinoff project has always been in the cards.

[New post] Doctor Who Big Finish- The Land of the Dead

Doctor Who Big Finish- The Land of the Dead

The Land of the Dead

Story 04 Written by Stephen Cole
Released January 2000

In the cold seclusion of Alaska, The Doctor and Nyssa find themselves embroiled in the final moments of a very old tragedy, forever altering the lives of two men linked in their grief. Rich eccentric Shaun Brett is constructing an insane testament to his departed father, using the skills of his childhood 'friend' Tulung. Both of their fathers had perished in a violent event that the TARDIS briefly witnessed 30 years ago. A great mystery and a stronger sense of resentment and anger connects the two men who seem doomed to wallow in the same excavation site that served as a burial mound for their parents.

In the midst of the drama is the wise-cracking designer Monica Lewis who uses natural material in building themed rooms in a shrine to Brett's father's historic find. Revisited, the dig is a wealth of knowledge and all of it is being used as building material in rooms made of stone, earth and even in a grisly case, of bone itself. Fragments of an unknown race of creatures predating the dinosaurs, nick-named Permians by the Doctor, are becoming animated and hostile, tearing at whatever and whoever they find and using raw material to renew themselves.

Like Whispers of Terror, The Land of the Dead is a wonderfully brilliant and inspired piece of classic Doctor Who tinged with new ideas and heightened drama. In addition to a knock-out cast and well-crafted supporting characters, the story allows for Peter Davison's Doctor to once again shine. A somewhat short-of-breath and scattered hero on screen, his depiction of the Doctor was often hampered by badly conceived companions and over-ambitious scripts.

In the Big Finish audios, Davison is given ample room to move and show what he is capable of without the BBC production team calling the shots. As indicated in several interviews, Davison had intended to inject a healthy dose of dry English wit into his version of the Doctor, but was kept from doing so by producer JNT who wished wished to distance himself from the sophomoric humor of the Graham Williams/Tom Baker/Douglas Adams era. In this instance, Davison is no longer restricted by any such demands and comes off as a sparkling personality. A brilliant, strange and whimsical personality, the Fifth Doctor of the audio adventures is an extension of the ideas that the actor explored on screen rather than an imitation.

Writer Stephen Cole comes from a long line of accomplishments in print including the highly acclaimed Doctor Who novel The Ancestor Cell. Of his three main Doctor Who Big Finish audios to date I have listened to this and the Apocalypse Element, an adventure steeped in action and technical jargon, but in my opinion little real substance in comparison to the Land of the Dead. A thrilling adventure full of charm and suspense, it comes highly recommended.

Doctor Who - The Land of the Dead can be purchased at local retailers and online from Big Finish.

Riverislandturbans

The seventies was a decade known for opposing cultures, with the right on hippy folk movement living side by side with some of the most decadent trends of the 20th century. With the fashion for flashy riches, Riviera and disco styles have become a great inspiration for the current 70s revival.

Accessories don't come more achingly glamorous than a chic turban, like this one from River Island. With a folded design throughout, accompanied with front knotting, this is perfect for pairing with oversized shades and a golden tan at the poolside. Just don't forget your jewellery.

It's available now from River Island in beige or brown for £9.99.

Cole of London's London mugs

Cole of London

More products celebrating London, though Cole of London's London mugs are a quirky take on the trend.

There are four mugs available, each featuring a different London landmark - pick from Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, Tower of London or the Houses of Parliament. Each place is depicted in a sketchy style which contrasts to the official looking title and facts that are listed on the side of each mug. It's a style that's reminiscent of the work of Royston Cooper, who produced many travel advertisements in the 50s and 60s - and that's a very good thing indeed.

Made from bone china, the mugs cost £10 each.

eBay watch: Original George Nelson Sunburst Clock by Howard Miller

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 05:32 AM PDT

Nelson

You can get reissued George Nelson clocks, but if you want the real deal, you can bid for this original George Nelson Sunburst Clock by Howard Miller.

Indeed, the reissued Nelson Sunburst clocks go for in excess of £200, so that's not exactly a cheap option. This one is signed (see close-up on the listing) and is down as working, with some wear and tear by way of the scuffs, scratches and wear to the brass. Again, see the listing for the full breakdown.

It's certainly an eye-catching piece though, amazing that something like this was in production around 50 years ago. £78.15 is the current price.

For sale: Two-bedroom flat in the 1930s art deco Ravelston Garden building in Ravelston, Edinburgh

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 04:22 AM PDT

Edin1

Fancy living out a 1930s fantasy? You can if you buy this two-bedroom flat in the 1930s art deco Ravelston Garden building in Ravelston, Edinburgh.

It's an apartment in one of the three blocks built back in 1935, the work of Andrew Neil and Robert Hurd and originally known as the Jenners flats. Each one is a category A listed building, designated by Historic Scotland for 'national or international importance'.

Edin2

As you might expect, the cool art deco exterior and stylised public area isn't really matched by the actual apartments, many of which have been designed more for comfort than as museum pieces. This is no exception.

Located on the first floor, it offers a 'recently upgraded' living space with two double bedrooms (one with en-suite shower room), lounge, dining room, access to a balcony (which overlooks the gardens) and of course, a kitchen. There's also a communal roof terrace and gardens, plus a large garage with automatic doors.

See the listing for more details and of course, more images. Offers in excess of £330,000 will secure it.
