ELVIS SINGS WITH FRANK SINATRA 1960

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 08:53 PM PST

Frank Sinatra Elvis Presley 1960

Elvis appeared with Frank Sinatra on his TV show after he left the Army in 1960. The show was billed as Called Welcome Home Elvis. Frank and Elvis sang a duet which featured Elvis singing Witchcraft and Frank singing Love Me Tender.

This was radical for a couple of reasons. One, that Frank was thought as not "cool" enough to sing an Elvis tune. Two that Elvis most likely couldn't croon a tune like Witchcraft. Elvis ran away with Witchcraft and Frank... well he will be forever cool no matter what he sang...

Frank Sinatra Elvis Presley 1960

Found this fantastic video of two Elvis songs and then the duet. The audience waited a long time for this show to begin and naturally completely freaked when Elvis kind of wandered onstage while Frank was still talking to the audience. You really feel the energy of Elvis in his prime.

Welcome Home Elvis was a 1960 television special on ABC starring Frank Sinatra and featuring Elvis Presley in his first televised appearance since coming home from his military service in Germany. The special was officially titled It's Nice to Go Traveling, but is more commonly known as Welcome Home Elvis having featured Elvis on his first TV appearance in three years. This was also Frank Sinatra's fourth and final television special that he did for sponsor Timex.

The special also featured Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford, and Nancy Sinatra, who later starred with Elvis in his 1968 film Speedway.

Elvis performed Fame and Fortune and Stuck on You, which were the two sides of his first post-Army single. He also performed a duet with Sinatra. Elvis performed Sinatra's classic Witchcraft while Frank performed the Elvis classic "Love Me Tender".

None of these performances were released on record until the 1980s. Presley also sang a verse during the opening production number, "It's Nice to Go Traveling", which has yet to be commercially released. The remainder of the special consisted of performances by the additional guest stars.
The show was a great success grabbing 41.5 percent of the ratings.

Alex Kirst, a former drummer for Iggy Pop, has been killed in a hit-and-run accident in Cathedral City, California, according to The Desert Sun newspaper. Kirst was 47.

BRINGING DOWN THE MOB: FBI BUSTS 110 CRIME SUSPECTS!

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 11:05 AM PST

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Authorities arrested 110 organized crime suspects in the northeastern United States and one in Italy on Thursday in what the FBI called the largest single-day operation against the Mafia in history.

The roundup, conducted with the helped of former mobsters turned informants, demonstrates not only that the Mafia remains a threat despite decades of crackdowns that have sent its hierarchies to prison, but also that its famed "omerta" code of silence is now largely a myth, officials said. More than 500 members of the FBI, New York Police Department (NYPD) officers, State Police, U.S. Marshals and other law enforcement agencies worked to carry out the raids, said Loretta Lynch, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

"Some believe organized crime is a thing of the past; unfortunately, there are still people who extort, intimidate, and victimize innocent Americans. The costs legitimate businesses are forced to pay are ultimately borne by American consumers nationwide," said FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III.

Vintage at Goodwood becomes Vintage in London for 2011

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 11:09 AM PST

Hem

The first event went down reasonably well - well enough for a return event. However, Vintage at Goodwood will no longer be at Goodwood, instead it will be Vintage in London.

It takes place over the weekend of the 29th, 30th and 31st July over a 21-acre section of the Embankment, including The Royal Festival Hall, The Hayward Gallery, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and The British Film Institute, plus the shops, restaurants and bars. The Thames Embankment itself will be 'transformed into a Vintage Wonderland' too.

According to the initial press release, all the clubs, bands, fashion, art, design, film, shopping, retailers, dancing and workshops of the original event will be re-created, along with some new editions covering everything from the 1920s to the '80s - warehouse parties and the Blitz Club look to be new additions, along with a recreation of the Wigan Casino. Film buffs should have a good time too, with the BFI putting on a programme featuring the best of 20th century cinema.

Full line-up details will be available nearer the time, but you can pre-register now for news and updates about the event at the website. And book your budget hotel early.

eBay watch: 1960s Opus 22 bedroom suite by Walter Muller for Stag

Stag

A useful thing and possibly a shrewd investment too - this Opus 22 bedroom suite by Walter Muller for Stag.

We usually associate the names John and Sylvia Reid with Stag, but this is actually a 1965 selection by German designer Muller, looking every bit the era too. For your money, you get a dressing table / desk with lift-up mirror (not unlike the new Stroller Desk by Steuart Padwick), a matching pair of three-drawer chests and a matching dressing stool.

Condition is described as 'very good' (see write-up for a detailed description) and the price, as I type, is 99p for the set.

Olive Lucky Clover cushion by Maria Hatling

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 07:25 AM PST

Olive lucky clover cushion
This Olive Lucky Clover cushion looks like a vintage fabric but in fact it's a contemporary design, just one from the collection of designer Maria Hatling.

Maria used to work as an in-house designer for Orla Kiely and you can see the same use of great retro patterns in her work, offering different colourways across her designs - this cushion is also available in pink for example. And it's not just cushions as you can also purchase prints and tea towels featuring her designs, all well worth an investigation.

Made from a cotton and linen mix, the cushion costs £55.

There's no doubt that the set is bound to improve anyone's vocabulary too - how about U for Uvula?

For your kids, or just to look pretty, the blocks cost £29.

Gainsbourg (2010) DVD reviewed

G1

If you missed it at the cinema, the DVD and Blu-ray release of Gainsbourg is now on the shelves - and we have a review of it on our Cinedelica site.

If you haven't guessed, it's a biopic of sorts of French music legend Serge Gainsbourg, from his early days as a Jewish child in wartime Paris through the glamour of the 50s, 60s and early 70s and of course, through the many relationships and the more than occasional scandal.

If you want to know what it's like (and see some stills), check out the review now.

New Adidas Samba reissues in blue or grey suede

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 12:54 AM PST

Samba1

It's been around in the Adidas archives for over 60 years, yet the Adidas Samba is still one of, if not THE most reissued Adidas trainer of the modern era. In fact, two more have been added to the ranks, a reissue on medium lead (aka grey) and a new version in bluebird (aka blue).

Aside from those colours, this is pretty much a reissue by numbers, aside from one thing. That means a suede upper, contrast detailing, gold Samba branding, a gum sole and spare set of laces. That mesh liner is perhaps the only noticeable difference to recent versions.

See the other colour option over the page, with the price at £52.
