[New post] Jason Aaron and Marc Silvestri take on the Hulk

Jason Aaron and Marc Silvestri take on the Hulk

dailypop | July 25, 2011 at 9:57 pm | Tags: hulk marvel jason aaron | Categories: Hulk | URL: http://wp.me/p4kUt-2U1

The Hulk is not just one of the most instantly recognizable comic book characters, he's also one of the best. Taking a page from the classics, Stan Lee crafted the character after Robert Lewis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Unassuming and withdrawn Bruce Banner's darkest impulses are given physical manifestation thanks to an over-dose of gamma radiation when the Hulk was born. An unstoppable monster of rage and destruction, the Hulk is unpredictable, appearing to be a hero one moment and a villain the next.

This Summer, Greg Pak will wrap up his long relationship with the Hulk. Following one of the most successful creators on the character is no small feat, so how will Jason Aaron and Marc Silvestri breath new life into the series while maintaining the high level of quality readers have grown accustomed to?

This autumn Banner and Hulk will split from each other only to wage all out war across the Marvel Universe. If you think you've seen the limits to the Hulk's power, think again...

"Like I do with a lot of stuff, we kind of jump into the thick of the story in 'Incredible Hulk, '" Aaron teased. "Something has happened, and for some reason Banner and Hulk are no longer the same person. We initially don't know why this happened, how it happened or who did it. The details will be filled in along the way. I don't want to go into specifics in terms of what role each character will be playing, but I will say this is more of a Hulk story than a Banner story. I wanted to flip that dynamic. For so many years Hulk has been driven by that Hulk-Banner dynamic where Banner is the super-scientist who accidentally gives birth to this monster inside him and the two are always fighting for control. Banner is fighting to suppress the Hulk and the Hulk is kind of this burden that Banner has to carry around. It brings a lot of tragedy into his life.

"With this new book, I wanted to look at things from the Hulk's point of view," Aaron continued. "Maybe the Hulk doesn't see things quite that same way. If he doesn't, the question becomes: What would he do if left to his own devices? Going into 'Incredible Hulk' #1 we have these two guys who tried to go their own separate ways and live their own lives, but, as you expect, it's not quite that simple, and they find themselves being dragged back together for various reasons. In the past we'd see them at odds and fighting for control of the same body. That fight would be in their minds. Now we see that fight exploding out, quite literally into the Marvel Universe at large. This is the beginning of the biggest Hulk-versus-Banner showdown we've ever seen."

Aaron sets the Hulk-versus-Banner conflict into motion with his first arc, "Hulk Asunder." "We pick up with both Hulk and Banner and see what they've been up to, and our first issue is more Hulk-focused," Aaron remarked. "Our second issue is more Banner-focused, so it is well balanced. We get to see things from both guys' perspectives. The arc also introduces a few new characters into the mix who will have a particular interest in both of these guys."

Mad science will play a large part in the battle between Banner and the Hulk, which means veteran artist Marc Silvestri will get the chance to bring to life all sorts of twisted and monstrous creations. "Expect lots of crazy creatures in the first issue, and really the first year," Aaron remarked. "I've thrown a lot of stuff at Marc. I've asked him to draw some of the biggest, weirdest monsters he's ever had to draw. So far he's knocking it all out of the park. I'd say this first arc is certainly crammed to the rafters with weird monsters, deformed animals and as many robots as you can possibly fit into a monthly comic."

Aaron and Silvestri's monthly "Incredible Hulk" run begins in October, and the writer hopes fans give the book a chance. After all, he has a long-form story to tell and would love to add his name to the list of creators who have had extended, multi-year runs on the Hulk. "In some sense this is a long-form story, but I'm also looking at this as a bit looser," Aaron said. "At this point we're talking about where the Hulk is going to be headed in the next year or so. Obviously he's a big player in next year's 'Avengers' movie. So that's going to be a good time for the Hulk. I'm thrilled to be involved with guiding the character forward. It will be an exciting time to figure out where we want to take him and where we want to go. So I'm in for the long haul."

[New post] Spider-Man surprise at SDCC2011

Spider-Man surprise at SDCC2011

dailypop | July 25, 2011 at 5:39 pm | Tags: spider-man webb garfield | Categories: Spider-Man | URL: http://wp.me/p4kUt-2TY

Opening the Amazing Spider-Man panel at SDCC2011, a masked man drew himself up to the microphone, clad in an absurd Spider-Man costume.

After this highly entertaining and surprising entrance that humbled the actor to the attending audience, Garfield won over anyone unsure of his devotion to the material. A 3-D reel followed revealing the new villain and several key moments before turning the floor over to a Q and A session.

Via CBR.com:

"I'm going to first say, I'm a huge fan of the first three movies," Garfield told the packed Hall H crowd. "We're huge fans of Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Sam Raimi…that should be said. We're approaching this like it's Shakespeare; it's a modern myth. We still want to watch these stories -- in 3-D, I might add. It's another chapter in a comic book story that means so much to so many people."

A fan asked about Spider-Man's web-shooters, and Garfield confirmed that they were not organic but manmade by Peter Parker himself. That change drew a few shouts of approval from the crowd. "They're mechanical; Peter designs them himself with his scientific genius," Garfield said. "He figures it out with his connection with Oscorp. It's pretty awesome."

Another fan asked about the changes to the Spider-Man costume. The spider emblem is different, the eyes have been changed, and it also looks like Spider-Man might be wearing shoes.

"We looked more at the Ultimate [Spider-Man] body type," Webb said. "How does a kid make a suit? It's natural a kid would use some of those elements. Andrew is incredibly fit, but skinny."

Garfield smiled broadly, adding, "Because how great is it to see a skinny guy beating up big guys?"

Stone was asked how it felt to be cast as Peter Parker's love interest. "To be honest, I've been trying to be as 'present' as possible," she replied. "I'm sitting on the stage at Comic-Con for Spider-Man; it's the most awesome thing in the world."

Another fan asked if Garfield and Stone experienced any hesitance to take on roles that might define the rest of their careers.

"A bunch -- I hesitated for a month," Garfield admitted. "I always wanted to play the role. The 4-year-old in me said, 'You're playing this role, man, there's no decision!' I just like being an actor; I was really scared of the big crowds, still am. I couldn't say no, ultimately."

Stone also felt some reluctance in taking part in the revamped film series. "Absolutely," she said, quickly adding, "I had come [to Comic-Con] before for 'Zombieland,' but being backstage for '[The Amazing) Spider-Man' is a totally different thing. This has to do with anything in life…any job you're afraid to take, if you love it, then the fear will be set aside."

The Amazing Spider-Man opens July 3, 2012.

[New post] Marvel TV announced at SDCC2011

Marvel TV announced at SDCC2011

dailypop | July 25, 2011 at 6:01 am | Tags: hulk marvel, marvel tv loeb | Categories: Hulk, Marvel | URL: http://wp.me/p4kUt-2T2

Along with their big movie projects, Marvel Entertainment is also branching out onto TV. Marvel already has a varied track record on the small screen. The publisher enjoyed massive success with their Hulk series back in the day, lackluster results with the Spider-Man program (though I personally champion it) and the unmentionables Dr. Strange and Captain America.

The 'heroes with real world problems' angle makes Marvel superheroes ideal for TV adaptation, but will the characters chosen make the grade or will they join Reb Brown in their legacy as duds? Only time will tell. The details of the line-up come from MarvelousNews.com, a site that I heartily recommend for sterling up to date news regarding the House of Ideas and their various action figure lines.

Via Marvelousnews:

Jeph Loeb shared some new information for the Marvel Television panel about upcoming live-action shows. Below are the highlights of the shows:

The first series for ABC is "AKA Jessica Jones" and described as a story about a failed superhero. The show would feature Carol Danvers and Luke Cage. The story follows a character named Jessica Jones, a former costumed superhero named Jewel who left that avocation to become a private investigator. The running thread is Jessica's character development, as the layers of her past and personality are revealed to the reader while, simultaneously, she tries to come to terms with them herself.

The next project was the Del Toro "Hulk" project, set in the early years of Bruce Banner and the series will be focused on the love story between Banner and Betty Ross.

The third project was "Cloak and Dagger", which is a story that centers on "two teenagers who discover each other and find their powers both complement and complicate their lives."

The final live-action TV project announced was "Mockingbird", which will depicting Bobby Morse as "a Peter Parker Nerd" who is recruited to a secret organization. So she will be a student by day and a special agent by night.
