RETROKIMMER: LOVES TODD RUNDGREN

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 12:58 PM PDT

Todd Rundgren

You know... I have to say that the coolest thing about creating Retrokimmer.com is the amazing musical education I began receiving and it continues everyday. How lucky I am to meet all these historic musical legends and they feel comfortable sharing their stories with me. From all over the globe I am receiving lessons on rock, classical, jazz, and soul music from fans and musicians alike.

It began when I started working with Dennis "Machinegun" Thompson the legendary drummer of the MC5. Working with Dennis on Machinegun's Blog he began choosing music that influenced him. One of the songs he chose was Todd Rundgren's "Bang the Drum All Day". I knew the song but I had no idea it was Todd's song!! How did I miss that?

My favorite album of Todd's is Something/Anything? My pal Teri and I would play this record over and over driving her parents out of their house!

My favorite song from the album is "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference"

But my all time favorite Todd Rundgren song is "Can We Still Be Friends" One of the themes of my entire life I suppose.. A lot of people have covered this song. Robert Palmer had a big hit with his cover. Still the original with Todd on vocals is best...

I just love this video with Darryl Hall and Todd together on vocals...

Todd Harry Rundgren (born June 22, 1948) is an American musician, singer-songwriter and record producer. Hailed in the early stage of his career as a new pop-wunderkind, supported by the certified gold solo double LP Something/Anything? in 1972, Todd Rundgren's career has produced a diverse range of recordings as solo artist, and during the seventies and eighties with the band Utopia. He has also been prolific as a producer and engineer on the recorded work of other musicians.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Rundgren engineered and/or produced many notable albums for other acts, including Straight Up by Badfinger, Stage Fright by The Band, We're an American Band by Grand Funk Railroad, Bat Out of Hell by Meat Loaf (now ranked as the fifth biggest-selling album of all time), and Skylarking by XTC. In the 1980s and 1990s his interest in video and computers led to Rundgren's "Time Heals" being the eighth video played on MTV, and "Change Myself" was generated on commercially available Amiga Computers.

His best-known songs include "Hello It's Me" and "I Saw the Light" which have heavy rotation on classic rock radio stations, and "Bang the Drum All Day" featured in many sports arenas, commercials, and movie trailers.

RETROKIMMER: HOLD ON BABY...

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 12:24 PM PDT

Received a note from a fan of my video that I made with The Rationals cover of "Hold on Baby" The comment was an opinion regarding the original "Hold on Baby" done by Sam Hawkins...

Original of course by Sam Hawkins on the Blue Cat label, May 1965. The Rationals covered it for Cameo in 1967. I wouldn't be without either version! This remake isn't bad, either. MikeBlitzMag

Scott and The Rationals reunited in the 1990s to record this song again. Drummer Bill Figg was absent so the lineup was:

Scott Morgan
Terry Trabandt
Steve Correll
Johnny Arizona

I really really like the Sam Hawkins version of Hold on Baby as it is perfect 60's soul. But for my money Scott Morgan's voice adds grit and intensity to the songs he covers. Scott told me yesterday that what the Rationals would do is find a song they wanted to cover. Then strip it down to it's basic form and then rebuild the tune to their taste. Works for me! xxooK

[New post] First look at Robin in Batman: Arkham City

First look at Robin in Batman: Arkham City

Via MTV Multiplayer:

Robin from the upcoming Batman: Arkham City video game

We already know that Catwoman is a playable character in "Batman: Arkham City." Now, it looks like The Boy Wonder himself is set to make an appearance in Rocksteady's follow-up to their fantastic 2009 game, "Batman: Arkham Asylum." While Catwoman is built right into the game, there's a bit of a catch if you want to play as Robin right away: you're going to have to pre-order the game from Best Buy. Holy retailer incentives, Batman.Retailer incentives – store-exclusive game features and characters – have become a bit of the norm these days. Of course, a lot of those exclusives are eventually put up for sale on your digital marketplace of choice, and Shack News has confirmed through Warner Bros. that Robin will eventually be available to everyone.

I should probably mention that this particular Robin is the Tim Drake version of the sidekick. For those of you who may be less familiar with Batman comic lore, Drake was the third boy to fill the red and green costume. The first Robin, Dick Grayson, grew up to become his own superhero, Nightwing. The second Robin, Jason Todd, was killed by the Joker after DC Comics held a telephone poll allowing readers to decide his fate (seriously, people hated Jason Todd). He eventually was resurrected – what do you want, it's a comic book – and became the Red Hood. That leads us to Tim Drake, who remained as Robin for nearly 20 years before breaking out on his own as Red Robin in 2009.

---------------------------

The "Arkham City" Robin package – you'll get a download code with your Best Buy pre-ordered game – also includes a Red Robin skin. While I haven't seen the Red Robin skin in particular, if it sticks close to the comic it will look a bit closer to Batman's suit (black cowel, cape, and a red suit underneath with the Red Robin logo on the chest). Robin is playable in two challenge modes, Black Mask Hideout and Freight Train Escape. Both levels are available to everyone, but only playable as Robin with the Best Buy pre-order.

Pedlars Vintage Sunglasses

Pedlarssunglasses
Pedlars' vintage ranges are always worth a look and their latest consignment of Vintage Sunglasses is no exception.

Pictured here is my favourite design, an Italian style from the 1970s in grey, but the other styles are just as stylish. Choose from unisex Japanese Aviators (dating from sometime in the period from the 1950s to 1970s) in either gold or silver or 1970s Pilot sunglasses from the USA. The Italian glasses cost £210, the other styles a bit more at £225.

Visit the Pedlars site to buy before they all sell out.

Charlotte Chair

Wickerchair
The Charlotte Chair may have been created in 1994, but wicker always shrieks retro to me.

It was designed by Mario Botta and manufactured in Italy. It is made from wicker, but on a steel frame, making it more durable than its 1970s counterparts. It costs a little over £1,000, which is a far cry from the 1970s prices too.

It is available to buy online at Panik Design.

Toulouse Stripe Tee from French Connection

Toulousestripe

Among the many iconic prints that fashion has retained from the fifties and sixties, perhaps the most simple and effective is the Breton stripe. Taken from nautical attire, its translation into fashion still has an air of retro appeal in pieces like this Toulouse Stripe Tee from French Connection.

The t-shirt's structure has subtle detailing that makes it stand out from the crowd, with a slash neck and short capped sleeves creating a silhouette that leans heavily enough on fifties and sixties beat kid clothing to retain the vintage aesthetic.

It's now available from French Connection UK for £27.

Egmont Fawn Lamp from Bodie and Fou

DEERJPEG
The childhood nostalgia of Disney's Bambi is perfectly captured in this kitsch but cute  Egmont Fawn Lamp from Bodie and Fou.

Perfect as a nighlight in a child's room, the lamp gives off a warm caramel glow to provide reassurance to little ones if they wake in the night. Those wide, innocent eyes and big ears give the little fawn lots of character and make it as appealing to style conscience parents as it is to kids.

The lamp is made of plastic and measures 40 x 17 x 36cm. It has an easy to use switch suitable for little fingers. It costs £94.99 from Bodie and Fou here.

Clare Nicolson new cushion collection

Clare Nicolson has frequently popped up on this site, for her vintage-inspired fabrics. It's been a while since we featured anything of her work, so it's a pleasure to see her new cushion collection.

The new designs move away a bit from her usual floral patterns. However, there's still a definite retro feel to her designs just, like the rectangle cushion pictured above, they focus on geometric designs instead. If you liked her other work, fear not - the new collection still includes one of her trademark bird designs, while each of the cushions still is finished with a vintage fabric reverse.

The cushions cost £50 each.

Mixtape stamp activity kit from Yellow Owl Workshop

Mixtape

The humble cassette compilation once more provides inspiration for designers, this time in the form of a mixtape stamp activity kit. It's made by the Yellow Owl Workshop, who you may remember from their ceramic polaroid camera.

The kit includes a rubber stamp representing an old fashioned mixtape mounted onto a marble block. You'll also get a blue ink pad and a red pencil, ready to dedicate your print. The music, however, you'll have to provide another way.

The stamp kit costs $19.
