The image below has gotten the online world all a-flutter after being leaked to the Internet yesterday. It shows actor Andrew Garfield in a drastically redesigned version of the Spider-Man film.

27 year-old Garfield (Red Riding, Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) takes over the dual role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man from Toby Maguire who starred in the box office hit trilogy of films directed by Sam Raimi. When Raimi and Sony could not resolve their creative differences over a fourth installment that might have featured John Malkovich as the Vulture, both director and actor were removed and the studio decided to start from scratch.

The current Spider-Man is a complete re-boot that sets the character back in high school. Scheduled for a 2012 Spider-Man is directed by Marc Webb of (500) Days of Summer. Sony is no doubt hopeful that the reboot will prove more successful than the previous movies and has recast all of the supporting parts along with the introduction of a new monstrous villain, the Lizard (played by Rhys Ifans). Love interest Mary Jane Watson will be played by Emma Stone. The roles of Uncle Ben and Aunt May will be played by Martin Sheen Sally Field and Denis Leary will appear as Captain George Stacy.

In the classic comics and films, the costume has been sewn together by Parker in his bedroom. While the 2002 version was a state of the art design that asked the audience to accept the outlandish concept, the new version looks even more sophisticated and begs the question 'can a teenager construct such a thing?' As fellow blogger cklockwork has pointed out, this is pretty outlandish even for a comic book movie.

The revamped Spider-Man will swing into full view on July 3, 2012.
