Silk Tulle Prom Dress by Dolce & Gabbana

For most of us the pricetags of high end designer fashion mean even a look at couture is best avoided, but on a few very special occasions there's just no resisting a peek. This Strapless Silk Dress from Dolce & Gabbana is a stunning item that might just be worthy of going out of your way to get your mitts on.

The style takes clear inspiration from fifties prom dresses, but the cut, fabrics and design are a cut above high street looks with the same idea. The full skirt and high waist create an exaggerated femininity, tying in with a sweetheart neckline to achieve the ideal silhouette. In a sumptuous silk, the floral design is irresistibly classic too.

It's available from Matches Fashion in the UK for a staggering price of £3185.

The perfect pair of vintage look shoes can make all the difference to an otherwise understated outfit, and there's little that packs more punch than some seventies stacked heels. These Lola Floral Platforms from Boohoo don't shy away from making a statement and they're all the better for it.

With an unashamedly summery feel, the floral platform heels tap into a post-sixties psychedelic mainstream. The front features a twisted black canvas while strappy heels take care of your ankles at such a daringly tricky height.

They're available now from Boohoo for £35.

Cappellini & Walt Disney Signature Limited Edition Rive Droite Armchair

The Cappellini & Walt Disney Signature Rive Droite Armchair is a limited edition piece (just 99 numbered pieces in the series) and part of a collaboration between the two brands.

On first glance, I thought the fabric covering this chair was a Missoni design as it has that same retro look, but as closer inspection reveals, it is the iconic Disney logo in an overlapping repeat print. As you might expect, this chair isn't cheap – it will probably set you back more than a family trip to DisneyLand at £3,102.

If you have that sort of money to space, order it online from Yoox.

A real 'statement' piece for your living room - this mushroom-style table lamp in orange.

Out of the 1970s, but still cutting a fine figure in the modern era, the lamp has a base and top of chrome-plated metal, with that bold orange shade in plastic. Tall too - standing at 20 inches (50cm), with 'very, very good above-average' stated for the condition.

Plastic Dreams: Synthetic Visions in Design by Charlotte and Peter Fiell

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Plasticdreams
When I think of plastic in design, I tend to think of 1960s space-age pieces, but its importance actually spans the past 150 years rather than just one decade. Plastic Dreams: Synthetic Visions in Design looks at the influence the material has had over that period.

The book charts the use of plastic from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, but of course it covers a lot of our favourite design periods in between. It features over 120 landmark designs, including Wells Coates AD 65 radio from the 1930s and Konstanin Grcic's MYTO chair, a modern design that we've featured here before on account of its retro looks.

Plastic Dreams is available to buy from Amazon, priced £23.70.

Biba bed linen at House of Fraser

MC_SACRE_BED-LINEN
We've been covering House of Fraser's Biba collections since they relaunched the brand last year. So far they've been concentrating on fashion but, true to the spirit of Big Biba, they're now moving into homewares with their new bed linen range

The linen very much takes its cue from Biba's own 70s take on Art Deco style. There are six different designs promised: the Adriana bed linen on the left uses the Biba logo for its pattern, while it's also reproduced in full on a selection of cushions.

Prices start at £16 for a pillowcase while the logo cushions cost £40.
