eBay watch: 1972 Fiat 500L car

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 09:44 AM PDT

Fiat500

We do like the modern version, but you can't beat the original - like this 1972 Fiat 500L.

It's a right-hand drive with just over 55,000 on the clock, the current (second) owner selling as he or she is moving abroad. Essentially, it's a well-maintained car, described as 'well kept and garaged' and with some improvements (like a synchro gearbox added by previous owner), but by and large in original condition, as the images on the listing show.

There's a hefty list of recent replacements on the listing, plus a list of things that might need attending to, indicating that it's an ongoing project, should you need a hobby. But on the plus side, this is one of the cheaper 500s on eBay right now, with the price currently at £1,000.

Bauhaus Archive app brings modernism to the iPhone

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 07:45 AM PDT

Bauhaus

It seems right that a cutting-edge design and architectural movement of the past has its own smartphone presence, as is the case with the Bauhaus Archive iPhone app.

According to Dexigner, this is an official app for both iPhone and iPod touch that opens up the Bauhaus archive via the exhibition The Bauhaus Collection: Originals of Classic Modernism. Over 100 images, along with commentary in English or German, some context as to what the Bauhaus movement achieved and some visitor information, should you fancy seeing the real thing in Berlin.

Best of all, it's a free download. Always a good thing.

For sale: Five-bedroomed art deco house in Willaston, Wirral, Cheshire

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 07:29 AM PDT

Will1

A great house from the outside, this five-bedroomed art deco house in Willaston, Wirral, Cheshire doesn't quite have the same wow factor inside. Although it does offer enough of a 'blank canvas' to put the period back in

Described as 'architecturally significant', the house was designed back in 1935 by local architect Hubert Thomas and can be found in the Cheshire volume of 'Buildings of Britain' by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner. So we're talking a house with some pedigree.

Will2

Sadly, only some of the period features survive from the original era. The exterior looks superb and the original roof terrace, the wood flooring and (some of the) windows are all there. But overall, it's more modern family home than period gem inside. On the upside though, it's not been overly renovated, so should be easy to convert back to a 1930s-style property if that's what you wish.

Will3

In terms of accommodation, you get a ground floor entrance hall, sitting room, dining room, kitchen / breakfast room, pantry / store and cloakroom / w.c. Upstairs, you'll find the master bedroom, second, third and fourth bedrooms and a re-fitted bathroom. The second floor fifth bedroom also offers access to a large (parapet walled) roof terrace with good views. Outside, there's a gated drive, a double garage and plenty of gardens.

How much? Offers around £500,000

As you can easily pay hundreds of pounds for top end lighting designs, it is reassuring to find cheap, but interesting alternatives, such as Ikea's Fillsta Lighting Series.

Pictured here is the table lamp version, which is available in white or this more unusual orange option. It measures 27 cm in diameter and stands at 31cm high. It gives out a soft mood light. If you want a stronger room light, then the floor standing version is a better option. It is 75 cm in diameter and 78cm tall, but is only available with a white shade. The table lamps cost just over £20 and the floor lamp a little over £56.

Austin chair

Fancy getting yourself your own Bond villain style swivel seat but are on a bit of a budget? Take a look at the Austin swivel chair, new at Dwell

This design is part of their Autumn collection which is currently previewing online ahead of its arrival into shops in August. As you'd expect from Dwell, the collection draws heavily on 60s and 70s influences, not least this chair which looks like it could have come straight out of a late 60s pad. This is the look on a budget, however, as the chair is upholstered in faux leather, with a stainless steel swivel base.

Due in stores on 11 August, the chair costs £299.
