Switched On Set back and updated

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 12:34 PM PDT

Made

Ok, it's not really gone anywhere, but we've not been able to update Switched On Set as much as we'd like in the past - but all that changed from last weekend.

We hope to update everyday now, so if you like the idea of a more contemporary flipside to Retro To Go, check out the site, add to your RSS feeds, sign up the daily mailout, Twitter etc etc. No Facebook, but if people want it, we'll set one up.

The chair above is one of today's finds, it's the latest Made.com design. Check out the site for more on that.

For sale: 1950s midcentury five-bedroomed house in London SW16

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 10:51 AM PDT

Mid1

An interesting property, not least because this midcentury five-bedroomed property in London SW16 is still very reminiscent of the era it was built. Unfortunately, it is being marketed with 'active planning permission for a complete redevelopment of the site', so it might not be staying that way.

But for now, let's enjoy its period glory, a period we are guessing is the 1950s - the agent gives no details of its heritage or the architect behind it. But one look at the exterior, the kitchen, the staircase, the wood flooring and the open-plan design of the place points us towards that particular era.

Mid2

Set in a 'superb location', the property has a 38' main reception room with dining area, study, fitted kitchen, utility room, master bedroom with balcony and en suite, four additional bedrooms, two bathrooms, two guest cloakrooms, numerous outbuildings with one housing pool machinery, a swimming pool and extensive gardens, as well as off-street parking.

Mid5

Modernisation is certainly necessary, but a sympathetic one rather than getting the bulldozer in. If you want to save it, you'll really have to shake that piggy bank hard - the price is £1,395,000.

Crimson and Bow-ver Heels from ModCloth

Crimsonvegan

The hunt for clothing that has both killer looks and ethically sourced fabrics at once can be a painstaking process, especially when it comes to leather accessories. Providing a rare find in footwear, however, are these Crimson and Bow-ver Heels from ModCloth, made from a vegan-friendly faux leather fabric.

The use of vegan materials doesn't mean the slightest compromise on style in this case, with the ruby red heels tapping into a very cute fifties and sixties aesthetic. The d'Orsay style sandals, complete with chunky ankle strap and heels, have an instant retro impact, with the bow vamp adding some extra kitsch appeal.

Get yours from ModCloth now for $47.99.

High Waisted Denim Shorts from Boohoo

Rebeccashorts

The weather across Britain may have taken a turn for the decidedly un-Summery, but that's no reason not to snap up some stylishly retro garb while it's on offer. This pair of Rebecca High Waisted Shorts from Boohoo are the sort of wardrobe staple that no fifties lover should pass up, regardless of season.

The tight fitting shorts have the ideal silhouette for a fifties pin-up chic, with a longer leg and turn-ups balancing the hip-hugging fit. The key to the vintage-look appeal, however, is the extra high waist, featuring matelot buttons for a hint of nautical fifties flair.

Get yours from Boohoo now for just £15.

eBay watch: 1950s home cocktail drinks cabinet / bar

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 09:11 AM PDT

Bar

You want kitsch? We got Kitsch. In fact, it doesn't get much more kitschier than this 1950s home cocktail drinks cabinet / bar.

Screaming the era (especially when it comes to the outside design and shape), this period gem opens up, complete with working light, to expose all the accessories you need for knocking up a quick cocktail - two cocktail glasses, six stainless steel olive picks, a stainless steel lemon squeezer and a range of different coloured leaf design rubber coasters still in their original box. Nice. Two sliding doors at the bottom that open to provide space for your bottles too.

No in-depth details of condition, but obviously it will have some wear from the last 50 years or so. Doesn't look bad from the pictures though. Prices isn't bad right now either - just £1.04.

Loopy-L127-7503
The Loopy Coffee Table has been a best-seller for GillmoreSPACE since they started selling it in 2002. Whilst it isn't of a vintage origin, its style is very much of the 1960s.

Its name comes from the fact that its shape is a loop (rather than it being slightly crazy). It is available in matt white lacquer or an oak finish. The table is currently on offer with the oak priced £345 and the white £332.

Clover coasters from Pryl design

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 02:35 AM PDT

Clovercoasters

These clover coasters from Pryl design are almost too eyecatching for resting your cup of tea on.

Designed by Julia Nielsen for the Swedish company, the classic four leaf clover is transformed into a psychedelic design which looks like it has been drawn from the late 1960s, rather than 2011. The clover design comes in three eye-popping colours, all printed onto triangular laminated birchwood - perfect for cheering up a dull table or desktop.

A set of three costs £12.

Fall cushion

Katy Chard is a printmaker and designer whose retro influences clearly show in her work, including this Fall fabric cushion.

The beautiful colours and textures used on the cushion give it a 1950s look. Like some of the most famous textile designers from that period, Chard also is heavily influenced by the natural world - some of her other designs play with the patterns of trees, flowers and even fish.

This cushion design costs £40.
